What is the origin of the animal headcover?

While reading some threads on theft and folks promoting the use of non OEM/generic headcovers to deter such theft got me thinking about the furry critters we dress up our bags with. I have always had a gopher in my bag (doesn't everyone love Caddyshack?) but I use OEM covers on my others. So where did the trend start? Was it Caddyshack? Was it a sports team? Just curious.

Not sure the origin of the animal headcover but I have a raccoon on my driver. The raccoon happens to be the logo from my golf club so that is why I have it. And I have found that the furry creature keeps the fairway clubs seperate so it works out.

Vlad "The Impaler" Tepes developed the practice... although his headcovers were actually people.

I'm hoping someone comes with a story about English golfers in the 40's hunting foxes in the woods, removing the intestines and using them as headcovers.

The Scots invented golf (or did the Dutch invent kolf?) so I'd suspect it was related to a sheep, a shepherd, and a staff. Maybe Wilson's staff?

After talking to my club pro today I'm pretty sure that I'm going to invest in some aftermarket covers. There has been a lot of theft at my club lately. Maybe a Lab for the driver, the big dog, but no tigers.
What I really should do is buy the $0.99 used Scotty Cameron putter cover they have for sale, stick it on the worst POS club I have and spend an hour at the bar staking out my bag.

I really wish you'd go back to a vintage persimmon already - stupid 460 cc!!

Cynical version? Origin is some guy wanted to figure out more ways to make money off golfers.

If you dont want to get your clubs stolen, Dont use an animal cover. When I see animal covers, I know something nice is under it. Use a really cheap headcover of a specific club. For example Ive got a walter hagen 5 wood head cover on my 909H hybrid, lol

In all seriousness, I'm sure some rich guy back in the day got a snazzy nickname of some sort of animal and decided to have a headcover made for himself.

Or maybe it's just that nothing takes the sting off a triple bogey more than a smiling golden retriever with your driver in its neck. Either one.

    • Day 95 - 2025-01-03 Light day again, mostly because Natalie gets very annoyed when she has to spend more than the time she wants to spend at the academy at the academy. 😛 So, I did work at home while watching a video.
    • Thanks a million, those are some good suggestions. I will report back.
    • Day 23: 1/3/2025 Had a long range session yesterday. It was pretty cold out there. Today it was colder than a brass toilet seat in the Yukon. So, I decided not to go to the outdoor range today. I did put in some solid slo-motion practice in front of the mirror. One of the things I wanted to focus on was making sure my left rear sit-bone was going back away from the ball and not up away from the ball.  That was one of the things I picked up from the video I took of myself at the range yesterday. Today was mostly slow motion in front of the mirror with a focus on driving my lead leg to push the carpet toward the ball as I jump away from it.  Hitting through a 2 inch gate from 11 feet is impressive. I usually use my 2 inch gate at about 3 feet, no more.  Good job out of you.
    • Been frustrating last few sessions. Starting to struggle to see gains with the 195g Max Effort. I did go and hit balls at the range a couple days ago and the radar had my swing speed at 110mph which is definitely faster than when I begun (previous speed recorded at my driver fitting was 107-108mph). So I would say so far I comfortable gain of 2-3mph without trying to hit the ball hard. Hopefully will break through this barrier I seem to be at and start seeing some gains
