Anyone can burn out. I'm burned out. Burned out of hitting out of the woods. I go to the practice range and hit two balls good then 10 bad. My inner ear is acting up and I sometimes lose my balance and fall backward - not to my right leg - backward. But if I give in, I'm not doing anything. So I'm not having any fun with this at the moment. Weed seems to help with the balance so I might just get stoned and play. Vaping is so discreet now people will think I'm smoking an E-cig. It's medical.

I think what I need to do is rediscover why I took up the game: to get outside in the sunshine, walk around and breathe the fresh air in peace and quiet in a relatively safe surrounding. So play some practice rounds in the mid day when it's slow. Play best of two balls. Use the foot wedge. Just have some fun. Don't play for score. No pressure. Just hit the ball. If I'm 250 yds away, I can hit my 8 iron if I want. It'll leave me a PW shot. Who cares? So I'm not chipping? I'll probably be in better shape than if I hit a hybrid or FW (woods).

With 6 months enforced lay off each year, I too am renewed by the time our courses are open.  I went to my course this morning and paid my membership for 2015 and the course is 98% snow free but soggy of course.  So we need some dry windy warm days and we shall begin again. By the end of October after a mid summer slump, I am playing some of my best golf of the year and it encourages one to come back next year.  In the matter of pain relief, I take two Aleve for my knee and rub it with ointment and wear a brace. But the effectiveness of the Aleve is reduced after a half year of 3 or 4 rounds per week.  I don't take it through the winter hoping I will not have to use it to relieve shoveling which is a pain in the ass rather than the knee. I will give the Bayer a try if the Aleve effect starts to wane.

This is 6th year of my playing golf.   I was burned out just once when I went to a series of slumps that got my HI from decent bogey golfer level to 23+.   The slump happened after my younger brother passed away after a long bout with cancer.   He was the one that helped me get into golf, and we used to play match rounds.  I also took him to courses otherwise he could not afford.   After his death, a little bit of air came out of my golf career.   I practiced less.   Even when I practiced, I was just going through the motions.   I stopped looking into new ways to improve.  But I could not quit golf.   It was already a big part of my life.   After about 6 months of continuous HI erosion, something snapped me out of it.  Perhaps, I let my brother go finally.   Beginning 2015, I took lessons, got fitted for irons/hybrid/driver, and started to work out.   In short time, I was able to get my HI down to a decent bogey golfer level.  I am practicing more.  I am learning new skills.  I am even posting more on this forum.   Golf is fun again.

My revised golf HI goal for 2015 is to get to 12.5 HI.   It's a tough goal but gives me something to shoot for.

I suffered burn-out about 10 years ago.  I didn't have the desire to pick up a club for a good 6 years!  I couldn't hit anything without a banana ball, I swear I even sliced my putts.  A few years ago my FIL asked me to go golfing with him.  I went and played my normal slicing game.  I went another year w/o playing.  He asked me to go again, and I went.  This time, I went w/o any preconceived notions of how I wanted my game to go.  I just relaxed and didn't care.  My game wasn't too bad.  It wasn't great, still about a 110, but stress-free.  A fire was re-lit in me and I haven't looked back.  I now play 2-3 rounds a week while reading and watching all I can consume.  I'm down to an average of about 88-92 after a few lessons from a local guy.  I'm hoping to get more lessons and take in the lessons from LSW.

I play 80 rounds or more every year, ranging from regular rounds with my buddies and/or my wife, tournaments at my club, interclub league play, and vacation golf.  In my mind, my season comes to a close after our week-long stay in Pinehurst every year, which usually includes 6 or 7 rounds of golf.  I wouldn't say I get burnt out, but by that time of year I don't crave it like I do in the spring.  I might play an occasional round or two through the winter months, but my golf-brain gets a chance to relax for a while. When the weather warms up in the Spring, I'm chomping at the bit to get back to the course.  Like I said, I wouldn't call it burn-out, but I enjoy my winter break from the game.

I should be burnt out but I'm not.

According to my GHIN, I have 133 rounds in the last 12 months, 53 in 2015. Those are rated courses. I also play 9 hole executive courses about one or two times a week.

I wish I had the time to play enough to burn out.  And until I had my daughter (11 months ago), I was playing once a week and practicing 2-5x per week, and that wasn't nearly enough to burn me out.  And I lived in LA, so there was no offseason.  I did that year round.

I could see getting burned out and needing to take occasional breaks with a full time job and maybe 4-5 rounds per week plus practice sessions.  I could easily see doing 2-3 rounds per week plus practice (if I had the time) without ever burning out!

Not me.

I have played 54 holes straight before and would have played more but it got dark.

God no. I play until it starts snowing, and weep until Spring. I suppose if I lived somewhere with golf weather all year, it would be possible.

You have a forced break from the game due to weather. In FLA, we play year round.  If you do that continuously for year after year, it's easy to get burned out from the sport.

To @Rick Martin 's point ... playing year round leads to some "I need a break periods." For me that may a couple of weeks. My other problem, is sometimes not seeing improvements on things I am working on, or those days when you seem to add 10-15 strokes for no reason ... you just play horrible that day, and I ask myself if I need to keep going at this game. At the end of the day, its the fun with friends and that socialization that keeps me coming back.

    • Broke the head of a Stealth Plus on a warm up. TaylorMade send me a new head but I decided to upgrade it to the new IQ10 LS and pay the difference. While I was waiting for the 8° head to arrive at the store I messed around with all the multi brand putts they had available. I instantly liked a black TaylorMade Spider, not the new one but very similar. The weight felt perfect. Big line in the middle for easy alignment. I was playing and old Zebra so the change in technology and feel was huge. Fast review of both clubs.. Driver QI10 LS. I always hit to ball up in the sky. I was playing the stealth at 7° with a 60g X low flight shaft and I was still hitting it pretty high. With the QI10 playing it at 6° now is almost hard for me to hit it high, with the same shaft the ball comes out lower and with less spin. so I'm really happy with the change. Putter Spider. I love it. It took me an afternoon to figure out how to grip it (it comes with a superStroke grip) but after that it all came into place. More stable on short putts and a good weight to swing smoothly on long putts and with added forgiveness over my old zebra.
    • I have a 2h but we don’t get along anymore. It’s a bit of an abusive relationship - she gives me just enough hope once in a while that things are going to be better and then it’s back to the same old shit. I went to a PING fitting recently with the intention to replace the hybrid with a 5w or something, thinking maybe I’ll be better with a fairway wood than a hybrid. But it turns out the best club I hit that fits in that slot in the bag is another hybrid so I ordered it.
    • Day 547, May 2, 2024 18 holes with @DrizZzY using my TruStick®. Hit a LOT of really good shots today.
    • Not the last thing I bought or bought anything at all but Sun Day Red stuff seems a bit overpriced for it essentially being rebranded Nike apparel. I'm hearing the resale prices are wild though. Either way, I highly doubt I will indulge as I'm not much of a brand guy or a collector. But to keep up my super nice guy image have never turned down a gift though 😇 Tiger doesn't seem to sell stuff like MJ or Kanye did.
