That was easy ... thanks Dormie!  (you too newtogolf)

I learned something new today.  (Not anything terribly useful, but hey, its something)

I find it odd that more and more golf bags have 14 slot dividers and a seperate putter holder (i.e. Nike tour 2 cart bag). I carry 15 (4 wedges..).

The 14th slot could be for people that like to carry alignment sticks and let's not forget the handy dandy ball retriever for when you hit your drive into the water.  I see these things in every golf store and golf department but I've yet to see anyone carry one.   Do people really buy them?

The 14th slot is where you are supposed to put the putter when you aren't playing.  I use it for my retriever when I'm carrying 14 clubs.  Just because you can cram more than 14 into the bag doesn't make it right.

By the way hanalei, if you've been playing with 15 clubs, then that 15 handicap is worthless.

I've carried the same ball retriever for more than 25 years.  I only use it to fish out my own ball, or those of my playing companions.  I don't ball hawk.  I use it for more than just water - I've gotten balls out of trees with it, and from back in underbrush in rattlesnake country where I'd just as soon not go crawling on my hands and knees.

try to learn the trick where you turn your right handed club upside down and hit it left handed.   i have it somewhat nailed down and can punch out a shot maybe 40 yards.   its pretty helpful.

Is there really any reason for derogatory name calling?  Just because you don't care if you lose a $4 ball, I do, and I'll recover it if possible.  You just make yourself out to be a jerk with comments like that.

I have one, but you won't see it in my bag.........unless you pull the headcover off of it!  I hide it out of shame But golf is expensive enough as it is, and that thing has paid for itself several times over.

I keep a tally wacker in my 14th slot.

I bought my Sun Mountain bag specifically because it has 15 slots.     I use the 15th slot for a given club I'm experimenting with ... if I'm playing alone - I like to compare clubs in an attempt to see which one works out best for a given shot ... right now I've got a 20 degree 7 wood & 21 degree hybrid in the bag ... if I'm playing alone, I take a shot with each to try to see which I get along better with.     Earlier in the year, I was carrying both a 3 wood & driving iron - if possible, I would hit both for the same shot & see which worked out better.     I always use a different color ball for the "experimental" club - so I knew which ball to score.     I'm fortunate in that my course isn't that crowded after work & I like to try different clubs for real shots on the course to get a better feel for how they do on the same shot (if nobody else is around of course) ... so at least in my mind there is a legitimate place for a 15 slot bag, just so you have a system to identify your "real" ball from your practice ball on the course.

If you play competitive golf with any regularity, I'd recommend never putting more than 14 clubs in your bag.  If you want extras available or want to experiment, get a little canvas carry bag and keep the extra clubs in there.

If you don't play competitively, it doesn't matter.

I need to pick up the slack...I only carry 11 clubs!  D, 3h, 5-pw, 54, 60, putter.

and Fourputt is right..whats so dorky about getting my ball back if I can reach it?  Thats what retrievers are for.  Where I play there are lots of shallow creeks and what not that you couldn't play from but you can easily see your ball and retrieve it.  I'll keep my 3.50 ball, thank you!

the ball retriever v. non-ball retriever argument is practically a meme.   its not at the level of walking v. riding, but geeze, its not like i called him an a**hole.  dork is a safe, and fairly funny thing to say.  4putt needs to show a little backbone...

I wasn't knocking the ball retriever or those that carry them.  I was just stating that I see them sold in every store that carries golf equipment but have yet to see one in someones bag on the course.

There must be one of these is every golfers garage cause they keep giving them shelf space so someone must buy them.

While I'm inclined to agree, and I'd put a ball retriever in the same category as a pocket protector: yes, it's probably "dorky," but if you need it, you use it.

Not everyone has the same attitude about self-deprecation, and some people don't find it amusing to think of themselves as "dorky." If you're trying to be funny in a friendly way, that's cool, but if the target doesn't take it well, don't put the fault on them. We're all friends here, right? I'll vouch for Fourputt having plenty of backbone.

In the bag:
FT-iQ 10° driver, FT 21° neutral 3H
T-Zoid Forged 15° 3W, MX-23 4-PW
Harmonized 52° GW, Tom Watson 56° SW, X-Forged Vintage 60° LW
White Hot XG #1 Putter, 33"

You play in different circles than I do then.  And I'm not talking about a bunch of 4 round a year beer guzzlers.  I play with a lot of very avid golfers who believe in mitigating the cost of playing in whatever way they can.  When premium balls are running at $50+ per dozen, then you can just about save a green fee on a bad ball striking day.  I see it as just good sense.  I paid about $5 for my retriever 25 years ago and it's still going strong.  If that makes me a dork in the eyes of some, well all I can say is I'm glad I don't see the world through their eyes.

Thanks Zeg.  People like him don't really bother me.  45 years ago maybe, but once I matured past the high school level, it really didn't matter any more.  'Dork' may be somewhat humorous in a generic framework, but when it's applied in a specific sense, then it's just demeaning.  Apparently he can't see the difference.

Seriously Rick you are one of the most thin skinned people on this site. So he feels like people are dorks for carrying them. Big deal. I would bet money you have an opinion on this site that sounds a lot like name calling here. Defending yourself and being offended to this isn't far off childish behavior either.
