Really not sure where to start with this post so I'm just going babble and see what happens... I've recently decided to work hard on my putting but I've found it really difficult. Initially i thought my bad putting was lack of regular practice, not starting on the correct start line, mis-reading greens and bad pace estimation but I'm slowly figuring out my issues: What's good: - I have a nice smooth, relaxed stroke. - The pace of the ball off the face is always as intended. - The ball always starts on the line I'm aiming on. What's bad: - My estimation if the speed of the green is hideous (I tend to leave everything short) - My aiming line is always right of where I think I'm aiming (verified with a putting aim mirror. When at address I follow the aim line on the mirror with my head/eyes and it looks to be aimed around 6in left of the actual aim at 10ft) I figure I'll learn pace estimation through practice but the aiming issue is a problem as I can't think of a way to correct it. I don't have binoculsr vision so that could be the issue but I guess whatever the reason I need a way to correct my aim or I'll never putt well. :( Any thoughts good TST people?

Have you read or seen Geoff Mangum's stuff? I suggest you get his book or watch the video he did with Steve Elkington. He is all about how your mind and eyes can work to make you a better putter. I suggest you try it out.

Yeah I got that when it first came out. Seemed really good at the time but I kinda went a little "Anti Geoff" when he started going militant against AimPoint. I'll take another look and see if there's anything in there I can use. Thanks guys. :)

EDIT: Chapter 10 of the video is genius for my issue. It explains precisely the reason why everything seems to be pointing left of target when I follow with my eye line but it's actually straight and also why when I aim to what I think is straight, the putts go right (not to be confused with pushing them - this is an aim issue)

I second the suggestion about the Mangum stuff. If you have the video I would review that a couple of times as there really is a lot of info pertinent to your issues.

I can understand this. He did seem to go a bit off the deep end with his rant. I tended to ignore that rant as I find that bright minded guys like Geoff tend to get something like that in their sites and have trouble letting it go.

I also suggest the book for even more depth. Much of the book you can skip as it is about how we learn and the brain, but it has a few more details and drills than the video.

Eccentric rants aside, I consider Geoff Mangum the most intelligent and insightful putting guru out there.

The guy knows his stuff and it will take you a long time to read his info.

The "Tips" section on his site is full of free articles about various aspects of putting, green reading, mechanics, putter fit, vision, etc...

His e-book ($9) "Optimal Putting" contains some of the most in depth putting info I have came across.

The guy will make you think. It is this thinking that breeds discovery. Discovery yields change. Change (if you suck) is improvement. Simple.

Known Geoff for over 10 years and unfortunately, his knowledge of putting (start line and speed control) are overshadowed by that personality, the same personality that has him hating ethnic groups and religious groups and so on and so forth. He might have built himself a putting empire and really helped a lot more people if he werent so goshdern insane. In my experience its best to soak up his information on putting and not ever meet the man in person as youll be turned off by the ratty sweaters rants against the color orange and the living out of the car look and smell among other things.

So is his e-book worth the read? It looks pretty comprehensive given the contents. Anyone?

I would say yes. I've even purchased things from Geoff. 'Twas before he called me a blatant cheater, but I digress. :-) He has a lot to offer. It's unfortunate that he can't simply teach the stroke and everything and leave the green reading stuff alone or just say "I teach it differently" and move on. But yes, I still encourage everyone to read Geoff's stuff about the putting stroke.

Is this $9 Optimal Putting e-book the same one that is available free as a pdf on puttingzone.com?

Aw, c'mon, you can't drop that in and not tell us the story.

But then again, what the hell do I know?

For pointing out that AimPoint charts were deemed legal by the USGA. I wasn't even USING them at the time, it was before I became certified. That's all.

It's a method that allows people to accurately estimate the break on putts. There are a lot of AimPoint "advertising" videos on YouTube but to me they look a little over-dramatic so here's one that's a little more down to earth:

Back on topic and I had a little putting practice yesterday using the stuff from CH10 in Geoff's video. It all makes complete sense now why my eye line looked as though it was left of target when it was straight (and in turn when I aimed at the target all putts went right) - Good call guys!

I'll tell you what I do as far as distance control. It has really helped me and might be of use to you. First, you need a consistent tempo. I do this by saying "tick tock" to myself, timing the tick on the takeaway and the tock at contact. It helps to practice this with a metronome, but that's not necessary as long as your consistent. Then, before each round I hit 3 balls taking the putter back to my big toe, and count paces to the balls. Then I do the same thing going back and take the average. I usually get about 3 paces, which should be about 7.5 feet. Then I repeat bringing the putter back just outside my right foot. I typically get 5 paces, or about 12.5 feet. It's useful to get a feel for something in the 25 foot range too. As long as you keep the same tempo, you've got two distances you can hit easily. Pace off your putts (which you probably already do for aimpoint) and a ten footer becomes halfway between those two and a five footer just a bit less than inside your big toe. You can adjust for slopes just by going back a bit more or less.

    • Day 24: did a stack session. Worked a bit on downswing feels during breaks.
    • Day 444 - 2025-12-18 Light day of hotel room work. GEARS Summit v2.0 today. Good day.
    • Day 38 (18 Dec 25) - got out in the backyard with grandson this afternoon.  We got into a little game of pitching the ball from about 25yds to a target point just off the asphalt lane behind the backyard.  Goal - just clear it with a quick hop and stop.  Focused on using the wedge swing motion I was talking with the course pro yesterday….smooth and thru just bruising the grass.  In addition to a concentrated focus on technique, it also called for a quiet mind locked in on target point.  Rehearsed this with both the 50° and 55° wedges.
    • I listened to the Shaun Webb one about the swing coach app. Sounds like a great thing and will (hopefully) be very useful for me. I do think the hosts are underestimating where AI could be in a few years. Right now it's just regurgitating stuff that it has been told or it has scrubbed from somewhere else and a human guiding things will be quite a lot more helpful than just the AI, but it's going to keep developing and it will reach the stage where it's figuring this stuff out on its own. Time will come when it will have you do a TPI style screen and take various height/arm length/leg length etc. measurements, have you tell it some history and your time constraints and goals and what not and it will watch a video of your swing face on and DTL and it will know exactly what you need to work on.
    • I found it entertaining, but the announcing was lousy.  How did the measuring on the final shot start with Rory being closer and being told he won, and then with no explanation it turns out Scottie won?  Weird.
