What course is that Drew? I need to get out and play again soon....been on a bit of a break...

Yeah, you fell off the face of the earth for a bit there!

It's Monarch Beach - Pakoh had a Crown Club card, so decent weekday deals were to be had, however, they are raising the price again so I think he's not renewing.  I won't be playing there much anymore.

One of those pictures is from the clubhouse, the rest are all on hole 3.

So I got a chance to play yesterday - don't worry @billchao, I will keep the pictures to myself ;) - and all in all, it wasn't bad.  I'm hitting better shots, hitting more draws, getting better and better every time out, it seems, with my pitching, but my driver is still holding me back.

I shot an 81 yesterday (6600, par 70, 72.5, 134) and I can attribute 7 dropped shots to yipped drivers.  And by that, I mean, drives that were wildly off line.  Here's a list:

#1: A 30 yard pull-draw in the weeds that led to a bogey.

#2: A 30 yard straight-slice (made worse by a head wind) into the drink, led to a double.

#7: A 40-50 nasty pull hook into hazard, led to bogey.

#10: Popped up push OB, double bogey after parring with second ball.

#11: Same as #7, got a lucky kickback into the rough, managed bogey from there.

#18: Big push slice led to nasty lie above bunker and a bogey.

That's 7 or 8 (#2 is a tough second shot even if I'm in the fairway so a par isn't a guarantee) shots right there.  Be able to keep the driver in play and all of a sudden that 81 could be a 73 or 74.

And I had two others nearly as bad, but that I was able to recover from and par.

I'm still working on getting the shaft pointing down at the ball at A5 and working on a straighter right leg around impact.  I think the straighter right leg might be the key to eliminating the snap hooks.  Maybe just keep at that, and work in some more "toes-up" drills as well.

OK, sorry Bill, I have to share:

Gosh! that is f*****g gorgeous!

The only thing I see in your video is green grass.

Yea, but just think how cold he must be to have to wear that vest :-P What was the tip, @Golfingdad ?

I love sweater vests but they must be going out of style because I haven't been able to find them at Old Navy the last couple of years.

What was the tip, @Golfingdad?

In a nutshell:  "steep going back then hips open and explode."

He had similar misses to mine, and my priority already has been to get steeper going back hopefully leading to shallower coming down.  Then a straighter right (actually both - but the feel is for the right per Stephan) leg with a "jumping" feel at impact.  Constantine's explanation sounded a lot like a different way to describe what already was my downswing priority piece, so I gave it a shot.  It's weird how different it feels AND how different the results are - I was hitting it really well - yet how very NOT different it looks on video.

Man, if I had a nickel for every time I said a variation of that last sentence in this thread, I'd have .... a bunch of nickels.

I've also been experimenting with pushing the ball even further forward - like, near my left toe, or even the outside of my left foot.  I can tell by the ball flights that I'm actually getting some of them on the upswing and they ARE going farther.

On another note:  I'm hopefully going to be taking a lesson with Mike and Dana here in the next few weeks or months, and then sometime after that I'll probably start back up with Evolvr.

No kidding. I like to try different feels and film them to see how they look on video. I find that the only way I can change the way something looks is to really exaggerate it, and even then it doesn't look nearly as different as it feels.

Looks pretty good. Much better with the transition piece from 4-5 with the shaft not steepening so much. Seeing less pushes and hooks?

Yeah ... Last two range sessions produced ZERO hooks and no push cuts either. Everything ranged from a slight draw to a medium push - all quite playable though. Can't wait to take it to the course and test it out (Saturday).

Beautiful swing, man. Don't take this the wrong way but you suck. :surrender:

There isn't a way you could mean that that would possibly offend meso it's all good. I'd insert a dancing banana or three here but I don't know how to use the sites emoticons on my phone.

  • 1 month later...

Latest videos (from today):

Nothing really new ... still working on steepening the backswing (a tad) and shallowing the downswing (quite a bit) while also monitoring my right leg and foot (trying to keep the leg straighter and the foot more planted then banked, rather than kicking my knee out).  I believe that although progress is at a snails pace, that (I think) its still progress.  I think I'm slooooooowly getting better in each of these aspects.

I can also call these my "before" vids because I'm having a lesson in a week.  In fact, I hadn't thought of it, but it will actually be my first one-on-one lesson in person.  I'm quite excited!!

Oh, and check out those snazzy new mats my range just got today!

Very pretty. What kind of camera do you use and do you slow it down through a particular program or through YouTube?

iphone 6.  I set it on "slo-mo" and shoot a few swings, then edit it down to one swing right on the phone.  Then as long as i have wi-fi when i upload to youtube, it comes thru in hd.

@Golfingdad , tough love time.

You've been working to change the picture in this particular way for how long? Awhile now, yes?

So change the picture.

Thanks Erik.

I knew I hadn't been making much progress, but this picture makes it even more obvious.  Will spend more time really exaggerating this feel and at slower speeds.  I've been neglecting my stupid monkey duties for awhile now - getting lazy and doing more at faster speeds than I should be when I clearly don't have it yet.  (I'll make a point to earn this badge back soon enough) ;)

I had recently begin paying attention to my left arm at A2 and A3 and that had improved some, but I paid no attention to the club shaft.  Did that last night after seeing this picture.  I use the reflection off the living room window at night when the light inside is on.  (Hopefully there are no peeping toms in my back yard)

I think I'll just work on this each night and start trying to piece together the right shoulder/elbow/wrist puzzle as well.

Did mine last night just before bed.  5 minutes in my living room working on TWO things:  My priority piece and not hitting the ceiling with a 7 iron. ;)

Just slowly making backswings to match the green line in the top left picture here (using my reflection in the window as a guide) and then trying to feel my right shoulder staying in front of me (pretty sure that's what Erik means ;)) at the transition.

Will keep doing the same thing each night.

I thought you were trying to get it to match the green line in the top right picture? :hmm:

    • There seems to be a lot of buzz around the new Maxfli Tour and TourS balls, especially with a handful of tour pros signing on to play them. My understanding is that the Tour is similar to the Titleist ProV1 and TourS is like the Titleist AVX. Has anyone played them? My main concern is that while I liked the feel and performance of the Maxfli balls of many years ago, I found the paint job on them was lousy. The finish looked a bit faded right out of the box, and after a few holes they had faded even more, and sometimes the paint was actually coming off. I'm hoping to find out if they are using a different factory or improved their paint process.  Opinions, please.
    • Day 298: range session during lunch. Hit balls for about 20 minutes, focusing on start line and curve. Much better than last night. Then did a stack putting session, which was solid (for me).
    • Day 2 (3 May 24) - Played 18 with the Men’s group today….a fun round in which my elderly neighbor was part of the foursome I was in.
    • You advertise LIV as "golf but louder" You had DJ's pumping Jock Jams all over the place. You have Bros who are really into golf and TFG shot gunning 26 oz bud lights, while double fisting a 19 oz coors. What type of behavior do you expect?
    • Did LIV pros cross ‘etiquette’ line at Masters? 3-time major winner has thought Did LIV Golf pros cross an “etiquette” line last month at the Masters? Three-time major winner Padraig Harrington has a thought. I do not mind cursing. I rather see some emotion on the course and honest reactions to bad shots or what not. I didn't catch it being a TON of cursing in this Masters. It was not noticeable.
