  1. 1. Will Tiger win his 15th major at Merion?

    • No... Tiger hasn't played Merion before... So the journey for 15 majors continues.
      11
    • Yes... Tiger is a Slam Dunk to win his 15th major at Merion.
      15
    • Maybe... Even at 7-2 odds. I don't gamble.

You get one or two nasty T-storms or a couple of days of rain in the area and the course is going to take a beating.

Bottom line this is going to be a different US Open. it is just my opinion of course you can disagree...that is why we have betting!!! of course mine is an educated opinion from having been there and spoken with several local pro's who know the place very well - for what that is worth.

Oh I totally understand. I also talked to some members an a friend who works there. Accuracy is key. The rough there is absolutely insane. Dont get me wrong, TW always stands a chance no matter how good/bad/injured he is. I too like someone else stated think his best chance is at the British this year. I actually find a guy like Gmac or even Webb to win this.

Hoylake strategy should pay off. Even if he hits 3I or 5W he hits those farther than most and just as accurate if not more so. Combine that with a good short game, good wedge game, and good putting and his odds are better than anyone else's. Still not better than the field, though. Never will be.

Woods is the fav for sure...but i think this you are on the right track the type of guy you like. i am also told the rough is just r idiculous - fairways while always huge will be even more this year!!

For those of you not familiar with the Philly area - Merion is the ultimate snobs course, that comes from even members of  other founding clubs...clubs on the main line with national and international members. There is a great story about reciprocation between Merion and another high-end course. short version is there was an agreement between them, the other club is making some changes, Merion sent letter and told them only the West course not the East...the other club responded back saying fair enough but the Merion would only be able to use the 9 hole course during the open closeing...LOL the Merion folks magically found spots on the East course!! They don't want the course to get beat up but everyone else kind of does! There is also a bit of a rivalry between Merion and Aronimick as they are only a few miles apart...should be interesting.

Last night i got an invite to Friday and dinner...but will be out of town...WTF.

The point is that he won't have to use the driver much.  The course is under 7000 yards.  There are only a few holes where driver will be necessary.

I'm imagining that wonderful stinger 2i and 300 yard 5w he hits. Leave the Tiger headcover on and hit the fairways. Although it sounds like there are a few holes where driver will be needed, so we shall see.

Since you are unable to attend, I'll gladly take them from you for free.  I'll make sure that whomever I sell them to, enjoys themselves and attends all eight days.  When you send me the tickets, also please include your social security number, your Mothers maiden name, and any previous addresses you've had over the past seven years.  Thanks!  I really appreciate your generosity!

The way Tiger is playing I would be hard pressed not pick him to win another major.   Tiger is back is his comfort zone and that's a scary thing if you are in the field.  By the way, Beachcomber, I like the article you linked in the OP...it's from my local paper!

I'm geeked about the Open returning to Merion. I still remember watching David Graham surgically move his way around it in 1981 shooting a final-round 67 to beat George Burns by (I think) 3 shots. Then it was deemed 'too short' for a major. Can't wait to see how the USGA is gonna trick it up (and yes, I think they will) - they'll have to hide the pins, makes the greens ridiculously fast & I'm sure the rough will be real nasty.

Oh.

I just recorded (and watched half of) the 1971 Open at Merion and just assumed that was the last time it was played there.  If I have time tonight, I will be watching the entire playoff between Jack and Lee.  Can't wait!

And no, I didn't read that before posting that Graham won by 3 over Burns. That's just how I roll.

    • Is it? I bought the Stack radar to replace my PRGR based on what Stack told me! When I am swinging for speed, the PRGR would miss 50%-80% of my backswings due to a higher speed. The stack seldom misses those- at least for me.
    • As an analyst by nature, I would like to compare the scores under both systems. It is something we can easily do if we have the data. I actually thought the new system was less fair to those whose game was on the decline - like mine! Old: Best 10 of last 20 scores with the .96 multiplier. Course handicap excluded course rating and overall par. New: Best 8/20. Course handicap includes course rating -par. My understanding is Stableford caps scores at Net double bogey like stroke play. If so, handicap should be slower to rise because you are only using 8 versus 10 scores. If I am missing something, I am curious enough to  want to understand what that may be. My home course tees that I play are 72.1/154 now. My best score out here is 82. When my game started to decline, my handicap didn’t budge for 13 rounds because of good scores in my first 8! I know I am an anomaly but my handicap has increased almost 80% in the past few years (with only a few rounds this year). For a few months I knew I was losing every bet because my game was nowhere near my handicap. I suspect I have steamrolled a few nuances but that shouldn’t matter much. When I have modeled this with someone playing the same tees and course, one good round, or return to form, will immediately reduce the handicap by some amount.
