Tiger Woods Master Catch-All Discussion

If he saw you tomorrow, what do you think he would do?

I'm pretty sure he would just blow me off. That's kind of how he does it. He doesn't try to be a jerk. He just doesn't get it. … There is a price for greatness. I think that comes across in the book.

Oh **** off, Haney. You don't get to write a tell-all gossip book where you're including stories in an effort to make them subject look bad (which he references in the next question), and then expect to gab like chums at the driving range.

No kidding. WTF a sociopath? Seriously? What the hell is he talking about. Haney needs to get over his own egocentric self.

Forreal. I've always supported the idea of Haney writing the book, but its just never-ending. A sociopath?

And I don't think it reads well for Haney for Damon Hack to say that he learned more about Tiger from the book than covering his career. That sounds pretty sarcastic to me.

Wow, that's a lot of animosity for someone who wrote, by all accounts a book of his own experience, thoughts and opinions. he retired from teaching tiger by quitting on his own accord from the worlds greatest golfer- during his peak time. he was not under any obligation or responsibility contractually forbidden to speak or to write - there was no non disclosure agreement. What he did write about were mostly his opinions, there was no dirt or smoking gun. I personally did not read anything slanderous. And for that matter no one came forth and disagreed with what was written- that I am aware of. did all of you read the book cover to cover? Or was the bible's writing of Jesus in bad taste too? Personally I did and found nothing strange or damaging about. It- to me it was like being inside the ropes a little bit. The " sociopath" comment came from behavior professionals based on some of Haney's writings, again another opinion of someone else. And you know what? there is some truth to the description.

If you believe that Haney quit completely on his own… then I've got some oceanfront property in Idaho to sell you.

he was not under any obligation or responsibility contractually forbidden to speak or to write - there was no non disclosure agreement.

He was under no LEGAL obligation. He violated the unwritten code, though.

And for that matter no one came forth and disagreed with what was written- that I am aware of

They didn't feel the need to dignify the book with a response. People don't respond to articles written in the National Enquirer very often either - doesn't make them all true.

But it's okay, you hate Tiger, so anything bad said about him you're inclined to agree. Right?

Whether you're a Tiger fan or not is no matter, you gotta take the book for what it's worth simply a behind-the-scene view of Tiger's world. I come to appreciate his solid work ethic especially when it came to preparing for majors, 8-10 hours on practice range is what seperates him from the field. Funny how Haney encouraged him to grip club in palm rather than fingers. And Tiger's obsession with the military is crazy when you consider he would walk away from the game to wear camouflage.

Any update on Tiger? Presumably with no sign of him on a course yet we can write off the chances of him being at Hoylake?

He's chipping and putting for longer periods of time without pain.

That's all they had to report. IIRC Notah Begay told someone, who reported it last night during Live From.

Thanks, good news that Notah Begay is well enough to pass Tiger news on!

[rule] But it's okay, you hate Tiger, so anything bad said about him you're inclined to agree. Right?

my point is there's a lot of over reaction of the " content" written, So much reaction and brew ha ha by posters that likely never read the book IMO I failed to read any part that was derogertory, bad, slanderous, mean spirited, shocking or for that matter unbelievable accounts or descriptions to have likely occured......inside of that book written about Haneys experience while coaching TW. The book has been out for a while and many have concluded the same thing, nothing shocking, no wow, no dirt, just a simple account of Hanks experience. But to each his own.

I read the book and thought it was ridiculous. The trash outweighed the "insights" by an order of magnitude.

I also thought it said way, way more about Haney than it said about Tiger.

Then you agree, the content wasn't anything insiteful or to write home about, kind of soft....nothing great. Oh well we'll have to wait for Harmon's book.. :-)

No.

He could have offered the insights with a retelling of history, and avoided the garbage.

Your suggestion would not make sense to the title of the book...The Big Miss: My Years Coaching Tiger Woods by Hank Haney

Back on topic though, I wonder if Tiger will be watching the US open? I mean like most/some of us we'll probably play golf and then watch What else would he do, from what I understand from another book about Marc O'Meara, Tiger enjoys fishing, but he probably can't do that either, so will he be watching?

Tiger hitting full shots? According to Tim Rosaforte of Golf Channel, Tiger Woods is taking full swings with the golf club again -- including his driver. Just heard @TigerWoods hitting balls at @MedalistGC this weekend, including driver. Check out @GCMorningDrive. — Tim Rosaforte (@TimRosaforte) June 17, 2014 With the British Open still five weeks away it sounds like Woods might be ready in time. I've said all along that I'd be surprised if he played that tournament, thinking he'd opt for a more comfortable venue (like the Bridgestone Invitational) but now I think I'd be surprised if he missed it. Woods isn't one to skip out on majors if he can give them a go and he won at Royal Liverpool back in 2006. Either way, the sport could use him as US Open ratings were down by almost 50 percent from last season. Woods is the 7-1 favorite to win the British Open.

    • @boogielicious and I are definitely in for the Stay & Play and will need the extra night's stay on Friday. I don't know what the plans are for our group on Friday but even if we don't make it for dinner with the rest of the Friday arrivals, I'll be more than happy to meet up somewhere for a beer or something.
    • Taking your dispersion and distance in consideration I analyzed the 4 posible ways to play the hole, or at least the ones that were listed here. I took the brown grass on the left as fescue were you need to punch out sideways to the fairway and rigth of the car path to be fescue too.  Driver "going for the green"  You have to aim more rigth, to the bunker in order to center your shotzone in between the fescue.  Wood of 240 over the bunkers I already like this one more for you. More room to land between the fescue. Balls in the fescue 11% down from 30% with driver. Improve of score from 4.55 to 4.40. 4 iron 210 yards besides the bunkers.    Also a wide area and your shot zone is better than previous ones. This makes almost the fescue dissapear. You really need to hit a bad one (sometimes shit happens). Because of that and only having 120 yards in this is the best choice so far. Down to 4.32 from 4.40. Finally the 6 Iron 180 yards to avoid all trouble.    Wide area an narrow dispersion for almost been in the fairway all the time. Similar than the previous one but 25 yards farther for the hole to avoid been in the bunkers. Average remains the same, 4.33 to 4.32.  Conclusion is easy. Either your 4iron or 6 iron of the tee are equaly good for you. Glad that you made par!
    • Wish I could have spent 5 minutes in the middle of the morning round to hit some balls at the range. Just did much more of right side through with keeping the shoulders feeling level (not dipping), and I was flushing them. Lol. Maybe too much focus on hands stuff while playing.
    • Last year I made an excel that can easily measure with my own SG data the average score for each club of the tee. Even the difference in score if you aim more left or right with the same club. I like it because it can be tweaked to account for different kind of rough, trees, hazards, greens etc.     As an example, On Par 5's that you have fescue on both sides were you can count them as a water hazard (penalty or punch out sideways), unless 3 wood or hybrid lands in a wider area between the fescue you should always hit driver. With a shorter club you are going to hit a couple less balls in the fescue than driver but you are not going to offset the fact that 100% of the shots are going to be played 30 or more yards longer. Here is a 560 par 5. Driver distance 280 yards total, 3 wood 250, hybrid 220. Distance between fescue is 30 yards (pretty tight). Dispersion for Driver is 62 yards. 56 for 3 wood and 49 for hybrid. Aiming of course at the middle of the fairway (20 yards wide) with driver you are going to hit 34% of balls on the fescue (17% left/17% right). 48% to the fairway and the rest to the rough.  The average score is going to be around 5.14. Looking at the result with 3 wood and hybrid you are going to hit less balls in the fescue but because of having longer 2nd shots you are going to score slightly worst. 5.17 and 5.25 respectively.    Things changes when the fescue is taller and you are probably going to loose the ball so changing the penalty of hitting there playing a 3 wood or hybrid gives a better score in the hole.  Off course 30 yards between penalty hazards is way to small. You normally have 60 or more, in that cases the score is going to be more close to 5 and been the Driver the weapon of choice.  The point is to see that no matter how tight the hole is, depending on the hole sometimes Driver is the play and sometimes 6 irons is the play. Is easy to see that on easy holes, but holes like this:  you need to crunch the numbers to find the best strategy.
    • Very much so. I think the intimidation factor that a lot of people feel playing against someone who's actually very good is significant. I know that Winged Foot pride themselves on the strength of the club. I think they have something like 40-50 players who are plus something. Club championships there are pretty competitive. Can't imagine Oakmont isn't similar. The more I think about this, the more likely it seems that this club is legit. Winning also breeds confidence and I'm sure the other clubs when they play this one are expecting to lose - that can easily become a self-fulfilling prophecy.
