Quote:

In an interview with Omnisport, a Europe-based sports news service, Gary Player called Woods’ decline “sad” and said that the game needs Woods to spread the game globally.

“We need Tiger Woods. Why? He’s a man of color. We need a black champion,” Player said, according to the report .

“Go to Africa, where we’ve got all these young black kids used to seeing a white guy as the champion. Now they’re getting inspired; they’re sitting in front of their TV sets. It inspires them; it gets them interested in golf.

“Asia wants to see a man of color. So there are many reasons besides being so charismatic. I don’t know if anybody in the world today can play like Tiger Woods did.”

I don't think Tiger is ever going to get back to anywhere near where he was, but I'm inclined to agree with Gary Player. Part of Tiger's appeal for me is that he's not white, and I can see how that would be inspiring to kids around the world.

Representation is very, very important; a large swath of the population takes that for granted because we've always been represented. An African-American just being on Tour is incredibly important.

So, with all the black basketball players in the USA, winning Olympics and the like, why isn't basketball popular in Africa?  Such African teams as do exist are completely unsuccessful internationally.

And basketball is a lot cheaper to play than golf.

This is all OT, but I'm sure developmental programs and stuff have a lot to do with it. I don't know if basketball is popular in Africa or not, but success on the international level is hardly indicative of that. Plenty of countries out there where soccer is the most popular sport and you don't see them competing on the international level.

Because it isn't as simple as that. It's not representation = success; it's more like representation = inspiration, or opportunity.

It's also more inspiring to see a minority or a black man doing something in a field that's traditionally been white than the 500th black man doing something 499 did before him. Or 4999. Or whatever.

Yup.

Representation is also wonderful for the sport; the more people who are interested in golf, the better off we all are.

I know that, and you know that, but does Gary Player know that?

Woods hints there's a chance he'll play after the PGA:

Quote:
But should he not win the PGA at Whistling Straits, Woods said that just playing well might lead him to enter the following week’s Wyndham Championship as a last resort to make the FEC playoffs . If he were to play those two weeks, it would be because Woods’ confidence got a boost at the Quicken Loans.

“I feel I’m very close (to winning),” he said.

Without adding an event, Woods would need to finish first or second at the PGA to crack the top 125 and qualify for the postseason.

To play the Deutsche Bank – an event that he hosts, and his foundation runs – Woods would need to be in the top 100.

I agree with Player, Tiger was great for golf because he shattered the stereotype of what golfers looked like.  Not only in skin color but athleticism too.  Part of the reason I didn't watch or play golf is because whenever I turned it on all I saw were old out of shape white guys.  It wasn't until Tiger that I appreciated how much athleticism was required to be a top golfer.

I think he wants to make the FedEx cup just to shut up the media about his golf swing changes and chances of playing competitive golf in the future.  If he misses FedEx there will be hundreds of articles and blogs all covering Tigers failure to make the cut.   I also have to believe Nike is pushing him to get into the fray since there's a chance Rory won't make it either given his ankle injury.

I don't think Tiger really cares much at all what Nike has to say about it. He still moves the needle more than even Rory does.

I was just about to post the same thing. Tiger has made much more money for Nike then they've paid him. He's been the Golden Goose for a long, long time.

He kinda needs to if he wants his season to continue. I really am not expecting much from him at the PGA. Whistling Straits is not a good course for him and I think he'll have his struggles there. If he does struggle and then skips the following week, his season is over...literally...unless he wants to play in Europe. And he needs tournament reps.

I'm all for him playing more. I think it can only help. Going to the Wyndham would be a good decision regardless of how well he does at the PGA.

He may not care, that's fine, but between the two of them they better start winning or Nike will only be in the apparel and shoe business soon.

Soon? Come on. Tiger won five times twonyears ago; Rory has won twice this year alone. Nike is doing fine.

    • Day 48. Got out at lunch to the range to hit some driver shots. Haven’t had much practice there. Focused on setup suggested by @iacas and found some very playable results. I did try to hit a couple of bunker shots after that with much less success 🙃
    • Got a rare birdie on #18 Par 5.  Drive was good and left me in range of the green.  I was @ 210 from the center and needed @ 180 to clear a hazard area.  Green had bunkers lest, right and on back. had been struggling and most shots were short so I took the 225 club figuring back of green hit well. i did hit it well, @ 229 per SS and dead on—kind at the pin.  Ended up @ 1 foot off the back in short rough and lucky for me it was a back pin placement.  Chipped about 15 feet leaving a 3 feet putt for par which I sunk.
    • Yea, so to clarify for me. I do not feel the clubface much in the swing. I feel the weight of the club. I can feel if I hit the club off the heel or toe. When I try to feel if the clubface is open or closed in the swing, I feel it more with my hands, and less of the clubhead. I would classify majority of my swings as not feeling like the clubface does much of all. It feels like I hold the clubface open. In the finish, it doesn't feel like my left hand faces the ground. It feels more like it faces the sky. I will try to be more aware of this, but it was just the sensation I got when I was making what felt like good swings. For the most part, I was hitting slight draws or slight pushes.  On this golf trip, I had to hit a low 8 iron around a tree to the green. I made an alignment adjustment, and actively try to roll my hands a bit more to get it to sling around the corner. I do have a habit of not adjusting how the clubface comes through impact, and I can still hit the ball straight-ish even moving the ball way back in my stance and trying to swing out more.  Yea, my feels are more hands and arms, less actually feeling the clubface.
