I'm thinking of posting my swing.  I have worked hard this past year and made no progress at all in my game.  Can someone let me know what you use to take your videos? Is my cell phone enough to do this or are you all using something of higher quality?

The latest phones are pretty good - I take all of my videos with an iPhone 6, often times using the slo-mo setting.

Just copy/paste and post it as a new post in your thread if you really want to. There's no reason to change your OP just because your swing and shape has changed. In fact it's the complete opposite of what it's for, IMO. You get to go back to the start of your journey and see how far you've gotten.

Ok, thanks. Maybe I'll make a new post with info once every year or something.

Its says no practice swings for video. Using a foam ball, or a plastic ball isnt a practice swing right? Due to the pandemic and lack of net it would be the only option for some folks, me in particular.

If you're hitting a practice ball, a foam ball, etc. at least that's something. Those are fine.

Yet another question about the technology for filming a swing.

I read Erik's updated "Filming your Swing" blog post as part of researching my next phone purchase.

My current phone, which is on its last legs, was able to record video up to 1080p at up to 120 fps (Pixel 3XL).  However, that camera isn't great at the moment (various reasons unrelated to its specifications) and I'm going to get a new device soon, too.  Its likely successor for me is only able to do 30fps at 1080p, so that won't work for filming a golf swing.  It can do 720p @ 480 fps though (device I'm likely to get is a Galaxy A42).  Will that work for this?  I realize the post says "at least 720p video," but I don't know if I should shoot for better than that (such as if it is expected to be outdated soon).  It also seems odd to me that a camera could do only 30fps at 1080p but 480 fps at 720p, but I know almost nothing about these things.

I am also debating getting a separate camera for golf swings if this won't work;  my prior separate-camera is a Canon PowerShot ELPH 110.  I believe it tops out at 720p / 30 fps;  if there's a reasonably priced camera that works for my golf swing filming, I'd be happy to get that and not sweat the camera on the phone.

Other than filming my golf swing, my phone is pretty much a communication device and podcast player, so I'm not going higher end except if doing so is the most effective way to get a good camera for my golf swing.

(Apologies if this should have been a separate thread, but I figured it was on-topic here and I didn't think there was another forum than Member Swings where this would be an appropriate top-level post)

720p at 480 fps is fine.

Hell, we still teach downtown with (partly due to file size stuff) with 240 fps at less than 480p.

Thank you!  I might get that phone sooner than later then, and with it, some video for Evolvr and my thread (current camera's output is such poor quality I shouldn't subject anyone to).

As I prepare to take my first swing video in about three years, I'm on different hardware (and I don't have access right now to whatever I used to use) than I used in the past.  I know from the main article that I want 200-300 fps;  my phone has 1/4 and 1/8 speed recordings.  I think this means the 1/8 speed is what I want; can someone who knows about this confirm for me?

I have a Google Pixel 6A (apparently, three years and change ago, I had a different one at the top of my list), so I hope that's good enough camera quality;  otherwise, in a few weeks I'll be home and can get to my Canon PowerShot ELPH 110, although (and I know almost nothing about cameras), I would guess that whatever camera is in my 6A is better than that one.  I can't seem to understand the specs I find online.

I'm asking it in this thread in hopes the answer ends up helping others in the future, too.

Thanks in advance to anyone who can help me with this.

I would recommend just testing the phone at the slowest speed on something other than your swing and see if the quality is there. You want it to be slow enough and clear enough to capture your club head at various points in the swing, especially P4 - 6.

    • Day 206 3-11 Focused on wider backswing and reconnecting arm in downswing. Wasn't really happy with how swing was looking today. Wider backswing is very different for me. Went back to do a some longer pauses at the top. Hit a few foam balls.
    • This is an awesome breakdown. most of the bigger tournaments usually have one wave with the advantage, Thank you for the breakdown. If it is soft then it will be a lower final score
    • Over the past 15 years, the winning score has ranged from -10 to -20. Mostly around -13.  Here is Thursday and Friday weather. Saturday and Sunday weather. I think the course will play soft. Plenty of sky cover, lots of rain on Thursday. Fairways and greens will probably stay soft throughout the week.  In terms of tee times, I think Thursday morning and Friday afternoon have the biggest advantage. • We have a very difficult but mostly showy course this week. Lets see what they got. This course offers so many chances to get into trouble it is really a mental minefield. I am excited to see who can handle it and who cant. Last year we got a foreshadowing of JJ and Rory, I am excited for this year Who do people have winning? what will the winning score be? I am thinking 12 or 13 under
