So I swing driver at 105. Bare minimum for Pro golfers. How are these guys getting 125? I'd settle for 110-115. Now I don't really do much working out beyond jogging a couple days a week. So should I think about weights? Medicine balls? Stretch bands? Any experience would be greatly appreciated. Types of moves? Types of Drills? Stretches? anything really..............

Strength and flexibility stuff is definitely a start but you won't see much of a boost from fitness alone. You'll need to be doing some swing speed specific training to tap into those gains made in the gym. Here is one example

Please note that the average tour clubhead speed was 113 mph last year. The average max speed is about 119.

So, not everyone is averaging 125 mph. Only 9 people on the Tour last year cracked 125 mph club head speed.

Also note that the top 5 in clubhead speed, are all over 6 ft 2 in tall. Out of the top 13 golfers in clubhead speed, 8 are above 6 ft 1 in tall.

If you want to gain clubhead speed I would first work on your golf swing. That will greatly improve clubhead speed. I have a friend who I play golf with. He use to hit it 280+, then his swing went to shit and now he can barely get it out there 250 yards. He's just as fit as I am, maybe about an inch shorter. The reason is, his swing is bad and he is loosing power.

Now as for working out. I recommend full body work outs. For one it improves your overall health. Two golf is a full body swing. I would emphasis on core muscles. By core I mean anything from the knees to the abs. So, quads, hamstrings, gluts, hip adductors, hip abductors, hip flexors, abdominals. These muscles are the engine that drive the train of the golf swing. The swing keeps the train on the tracks, but the core is its engine. Look at Rory, he's 5 ft 10 in tall, but he has very fast hip speed. He's only able to use this speed to its potential after he started working out and stabilizing his foundation to harness that hip speed.

A key importance is flexibility. Working out will help a lot. Doing full range of motion exercises will improve flexibility. I would recommend yoga as well.

From there it really is just your innate ability.

Thanks! I actually like that video showing the over speed. makes sense. I'll do some working out and try to incorporate that stuff into practice.

the irony of this that it says you will gain in 10 mins, but the video is just shy of 20....

I've done over speed training and have went from 115 to 130 in about 18 months. I'm currently working on it harder and getting more flexible to be able to swing over 135 so I can compete in long drive. Weights never helped me but then again I didn't work out full body I worked out like a bodybuilder.

I think I swing fast enough, but I need better contact. I'd be willing to bet that most people here would benefit more from better contact than any gain in swing speed.

Thanks! and yes I agree that better contact equals longer drives. in 20 years of golf though I have had plenty of years where my contact was good. I generally overpower most courses I play from the standard tees since most leagues i play in play from the standard tees. Its when i get to the tips that I realize I could use some more pop. I'd say I average a solid 240-260 I go in to the launch monitors and they show 290-300. I don't see that on the courses though. I have hit it over 300 on the course many times but probably with tailwind/ downwind/ dry ground help

Update:

I ordered a radar sensor.  Same one in the video above.  Already have a headless shaft.  Just gotta make myself something in between like that guy had in the video.

I'll try to keep updating this with stats and maybe some video.

Seriously.  A 105 swing speed with good contact and launch angle is going to put you out there at 260-270 or so ... you could play some pretty good golf if you could do that every time.

More distance has never once been something I've thought about ... and I am not a particularly long hitter by any means.  I just know that I'm long enough if I can make good contact, so that's all I worry about.

Yea sometimes I think people use swing speed or distance as a crutch. It's as if they're somehow convinced they're going to be a better golfers simply if they could hit the ball farther. It's all about quality of ball striking. I don't care if you hit your 9i 150 yards or 110 yards, if you're missing your target, you're probably not scoring well. I've been beat by old men who couldn't drive a ball 180, but they manage to have better control over their drivers than I have over a 6i.

Haha.  Ain't that the truth.  I've definitely been beaten by old guys who use driver/3w to get to greens that I can reach with driver and a partial 60˚.  But their 3w was more on target than my 8i, so...

I'm not sure if you're joking or not, but... Say you swing 5mph faster on all you clubs. What's that translate to, 10 yards? Are you really going to be that much better with a 10 yard gain on all your clubs? Oh and please don't take that the wrong way as I'm not trying to be antagonistic or anything. I just believe it's a fallacy. I simply believe there are other areas of improvement that golfers can focus on that will yield much greater results.

I see the problem here.

If I was your caddie, I would have told you not to hit 8 iron when the shot called for a partial 60*.  What were you thinking?!?!?!?!?! :-P

    • Well, if your frame of reference spins twice during the swing, then Bryson's ab/adduction is more like 780 degrees so there! (Yes I'm being silly, but not sure it's any sillier than what your pal Andy is doing...)
    • Update: Brandon Sorsby has decided to enter the NFL Supplemental Draft. He will not play for Texas Tech in the upcoming season.  From my perspective, I think he did the right thing. I hope he gets the correct help for his gambling addiction. I say the right thing, because I would be worried that the stress from all of this now and throughout the entire year would not be beneficial towards his mental health.  If an NFL team picks him up, then there really isn't any pressure for him to play immediately. He can work on himself and his game for the NFL.  From Texas Tech,  "Texas Tech will continue to provide the support and recovery resources Brendan requires on this journey.     • So, something I noticed yesterday at the range. My eyes and visualization of what the ball needs to do is way off. I put up an alignment stick about 10 yards down range. My initial thought was, "Oh crap". Even while wearing prescription sunglasses, and I know I am hitting it towards the sun, I couldn't pick up where the ball was at all. 
    • Oh man. As you can see above, Manavian mocked me for not realizing they were getting the 130° from BOTH shoulders. Apparently, though, Manavian is also wrong, as Andy said I was lying when I cited what Manavian had written: The next thing Andy says that's both accurate and clearly stated will be the first. I replied to that post with something like: Tell Manavian who said "only counting the abduction/adduction of one shoulder rather than 2." One of the issues with “bad” information is that y’all can’t even get on the same page. You've not shown that Bryson has 130° range of motion in either shoulder separately P1 to P7. I’ve shown the numbers. You’ve name-called and just said “nuh uh” repeatedly. Did you see the AMG IG video? Of course you have. Wrapping your head around the distance the shoulder travels yet, Andy? Andy later commented to explain how he got his range of motion number (apologies to whoever @iacac and @icaca are on Instagram, who are going to be wondering just what in the hell they've gotten themselves into). Oh boy. Adding the numbers in one direction and then adding them again going back is not a "range" of motion. If I can bend my knees 140°, I don't claim to have 280° range of motion because I have two knees nor because I can also extend my knees 140° after bending them. Bryson (with a driver, again — I used his iron swing) abducts about 65° (and bends his elbow a ton) with the driver. Then he adducts 50… and then another 15°… to end up right back where he started. This is exactly the equivalent of saying that I bend my knees 140° and then straighten them, creating a range of 280°. It's so silly I don't even have much of a response. It falls down completely on its own. It doesn't need even a nudge.
    • Can't remember who but some wise guy said "Arms up, body around"..😉. Anywho, been working on pinning my lead arm less and less to my chest in the BS. Decent progress with the arms, need a lot of work and trust for the 'body around' part.
