This is the "give Phil a last good shot" Open. Reminds of the Open at Pebble Beach that Watson won. It was late in his career and, like Phil, Tom spent little time in the fairway off the tee and relied on a brilliant 100 yard and in game. Best short game I ever saw. Tom, like Phil today, couldn't hit a straight drive and couldn't deal with the thick 6-8 inch rough at typical US Opens. But the Open committee decided to cut down all the rough at PB and Tom took advantage.

Phil will be in the hunt and if his short putting holds up this will be his big chance.

Its the strange thing about Watson's career, that US Open at the end of his career was won when he was 33, it was the 31st win of his 39 PGA wins, his career just hit a wall after the 1984 British Open where he lost to Seve.

Did Roy McAvoy qualify?

I believe he did... with a 7 iron. ;-)

I like his chances at No. 2 - sets up much better for his game than all the water at Kingwood Country Club.

Done.  (Not as thorough as Matt, though ;))

I would really like to see Phil pull this off. My heart says Phil, but my head says someone like Zach Johnson. No pin-seeking, just hit it in the middle of the green and go from there.

Ditto here.  That would make for a pretty amazing Sunday, if you ask me.

I know everyone's got a different opinion, but after watching TGC's State of the Game episode, I'm going to miss NBC doing the US Open. I think they've done an amazing job the last 20 years with it and they have great talent. I think Hicks and Miller are awesome, and I love Maltbie, Rolfing and Koch. I just don't know if Fox can do as good a job.

I agree, I hope Phil can pull it off, however my gut feeling is he really hasn't demonstrated this spring. My gut says Jason Day will prevail.

That's an impressive gut you got there.  All mine keeps saying is "Hey ***hole, why did you eat that second donut?!?!?!" :-P

I dunno if I mentioned this before, but I'm gonna miss NBC's US Open music. Not a big listener of Yanni, but it fits the US Open pretty good. It's the right balance of martialness and pomp. I'm guessing Fox is gonna have some kind over the top blaring soundtrack.

Mmmm... Donut...

My gut tells me that Phil will take this for the emotional win.

Or it could be bad pizza working it's way through.

Sorry much bigger than a thought. Too excited. Will try later to make it smaller. Not very good at some things on the computer. So go Phil yay, lol.

This is NC. I live in Charlotte and from May until about September this is what the forecast looks like everyday. It may not even rain. Or may just be little spurts.

The outlook has changed in the last 24 hours....highest chances of rain are late in the day Sat & Sun - Thursday looks better.

Only concern with afternoon thunderstorms is what happened at Bethpage in '02, Baltusrol in '05 and Sawgrass this past year.....it becomes a race against sunset if there's a delay. Officials hate to push tee times up an hour for TV reasons. Hopefully if there is a thunderstorm Sunday, it's a quickie like the one in Bethpage in '02.

It was news to me to me at least.

    • Bryson got hit with a 2 shot penalty, after the round, for improving his lie on hole 5.  Here is a post on X, showing how he stepped on high grass when he was looking down his target line.  When they cut to the side shot, you can see how close he was behind the ball.  I think the R&A probably made the correct decision. You just have to be really careful when you are walking in the high grass, around the ball and where you are to make a swing.

    • Day 27 (17 July 26) - Normally an 18 hole day, but due to commitments abbreviated the round to 9 holes (played the back nine at home course).  Had a solid session where even the worst miss (tee shot off 18) was fully playable.  Shot a solid 39 (6pars, 3bogies) - not dbls, no three putts - just boring golf.
    • Overall, well said. People have to be very careful in trying to describe very complex problem in simple terms. In this case, it is a clear fundamental misunderstanding of Newton's 1st and 3rd laws.  To clarify more on the misinterpretation of Newton's 1st law. The exact interpretation of Newton's 1st Law....  "Every body continues in its state of rest, or of uniform motion in a straight line, unless it is compelled to change that state by forces impressed upon it" yea, a body will stay motionless unless a force acts upon it. An object will stay on its path of motion unless a force acts upon it.  I get it, complex physics problems are difficult. There is a lot of simplification done in most physics class when it is taught. A classic problem uses a frictionless surface. Projectile motion excludes drag and wind direction. Collisions are usually elastic. The golf swing is not a simple physics problem.  Yea, I think they got caught up the data on the graphs and are not truly understanding cause and effect.  If the golfer isn't first pushing into the ground, then the ground isn't going to push back.  The internal forces of the body create the motion, not the external forces from the ground. The ground isn't like what Psy uses to start his concert. 🤣 You probably need to be connected to the ground and have those GRF to help the body produce the motion you want. Your body has to move in the right way to produce the GRF which helps you move the body in the way you want. Body motion precedes the GRF.
