Glove Vs. No Glove

The pros, and TV golf teachers, etc, all wear gloves because they are paid to do so.  Just like the advert hats. Whether gloves help or hinder your game is highly subjective although is wet, or very humid, weather they can promote better grip. Rules indicate that a towel, handkerchief, or cloth may be used as desired.

Jack Nicklaus did not remove his glove when putting. So the feel idea may be only that, an 'idea'.

You seem to be pretty big into these conspiracy theories about the reasons why people do things and pervasive advertising. Most pros wear gloves probably because they grew up using gloves. Some pros don't use gloves.

That bloke on the Golf Channel, the golf school teacher, showing us how to putt is wearing a brand new FOOT JOY glove.  There is no conspiracy here. I can accept that gloves may help holding on when swinging 121 mph but i can find no benefit to wearing one glove while demonstrating putting. Except cash. Sure, conforming to childhood embedded techniques also in play but when pro X switches from Titleist clubs to Callaway clubs, and then changes his glove from Foot Joy to Callaway, what's going on?

I do not care about anyone's hands but mine and i wear gloves only to help when wet/sweaty or on sunny days for UV protection.

thing is there's good and bad gloves.     It's the only aspect of my golfing that I don't chince out on ... I buy used clubs, used balls,etc ... but I pony up for good quality cabrietta leather gloves.   Cheap synthetic leather gloves totally suck - a nice thin cabrietta leather glove is dramatically better !!

I think alot of people are turned off on wearing a golf glove because they've never had a good one.    A good glove will cost you a whopping $16-22; whereby, a cheap synthetic glove will net you $8 at walmart.       Can often get a good glove at Rockbottomgolf or Budgetgolf on sale for alot less ...

Tiger used to tape his middle finger.  Not sure if he still does.

I never noticed before, but I do have a small callous on my right index finger, so I guess it must rub at least a little bit.

I tend to think @iacas is right.  Back in the day, VERY few people didn't wear gloves.  You see a lot more these days, though I think some of it comes from much better grip technology than we had back then.  Back then, most serious players played full-cords, and gloves were pretty necessary to keep from really tearing up your hand.   Softer, tackier compounds these days are much easier on the hands.....but those that have always worn a glove, tend to stick with it.

Yeah, I wasn't talking about Michael Breed. I was talking about PGA Tour players.

I've switched back and forth on this. Since switching to a grip that is corded in the top half, I gone to wearing a glove. It just helps keep my hands from getting beat up too much. Next year I plan on getting a set of Pure Grips, so I'll probably ditch the glove again.

I'm cheap.  I have Golf Pride Tour Velvet grips and never wear glove.  I figure it's one of the least expensive grips, it feels good, and I never get blisters.  The only callus I have is on the palm at the base of my ring finger from playing with my wedding ring on.

I made the switch to gloveless 2 months ago.  I played a lot of golf that week and after a couple rounds my hands hurt, but I took 1 day off and after that it was fine.  Haven't looked back.  One less thing to buy and one less thing to do between shots.

In hot weather, it's a two edged sword. A glove helps with the grip, but perspiration ruins the glove.

I rotate two gloves throughout a round if need be, and remove my glove between shots and for chipping/putting.  You'll get a lot more life out of your gloves that way, even in the FL heat and humidity.

thanks for the info. i haven't tried rotating two gloves, but i do take the glove off for putting. I know a few people who do use gloves anymore.

There's someone on my team who rotates through about four gloves every round. He just uses their velcro to attach them to various straps around his bag, so it ends up looking sort of like a christmas tree if his gloves were ornaments.

In a game that's already both (a) very expensive and (b) very mental, a glove just seems to complicate things.  Its cheaper in the long run and I don't have to worry about removing the glove for "feel" shots, or putting it on for "full" shots or any of that other antiquated mumbo jumbo.

I have to admit, though, that if I played the standard grips that come with new clubs, I'd probably wear a glove on both hands because they are so rough on the hands. I switched to Winn DriTac grips two years ago and haven't looked back since.

I think gloves are completely a "Personal Preference"! The grips they have nowadays lets you get away with it.

I feel completely naked without a glove yet my son can't stand having one on. I tried a couple years ago to get him to play with one but he didn't like it and felt uncomfortable. So he has went gloveless all his golfing life.

Sometimes I practice without one, but I always play with one. Especially if it's humid or rainy...which during golf seasons, it's always one or the other in Cleveland.

Any "feel" shot (Pitching, chipping, putting) the glove comes off.
