You Vote: Birth of Child or Big Payday?

I'd take the big payday every time, no question. My wife would tell me to do so as well.

We're a bit more on the practical side: even as little as $10k would go a long way towards improving our lives, while the memory only serves me. The kid sure as heck isn't remembering it, but they'll remember an awesome family vacation, or the contribution to their first house down payment, or college, etc.

I guess it depends on whether the big payday is life changing.  I'd choose the birth of my first child over a million dollar payday, if I already had $10 million in the bank.

I'd take $10k over the birth, if we were barely putting food on the table as it is and that money would make a real difference in the next year or longer.

To put it into more recent context, Billy Horschel would have been an IDIOT to withdraw from the tournament Sunday to attend the birth of his child......or anything else for that matter.  He's now relatively set financially for life.  You just can't pass something like that up for anything.

Hunter Mahan chose to walk off the course when he had a shot at winning to witness the birth of his child but the payday wasn't close to what Horschel was playing for.  I'd also guess Mahan had more in the bank than Horschel did before yesterday.

In my case, the decision would be a mutual one that my wife and I both agreed was the best decision for our family.  I was fortunate enough to watch both my children be born and assist in their birth but my guess is if I had a chance like Horschel did, I'd be playing golf to secure all of our financial futures.

I would say the payday.   He could injure himself tomorrow and have his career go down the tubes.   A birth is a defining moment in life.  But as the father of 2 kids, there are millions of memories and the security of being able to provide no matter what is extremely important as well.

He could have a family member take video so that he could at least watch view the event.  It's not the same as being there but better than nothing.

And this is from somebody that has turned down much better paying jobs because they required time away from my family. Long term I'll take family every time. Short term I'm doing what is best for my family (and that's the money).
