David Edel rethinks weighting in putters with his E-Series line

By Mike Stachura

Puttermaker David Edel believes traditional putters can make the golfer work too hard to control the way the face rotates open or closed. He thinks unlike traditional face-balanced or toe-down designs, the best weighting places the putterhead in a toe-up position, what he calls "torque balanced."

loop-E-1-Iso-Cavity-518.jpg His new Torque Balanced E-Series putters feature a cavity in the sole's toe. "It eliminates a lot of the hidden element of face rotation that people suffer with," Edel says. "Whether you're a straight-back, straight-through putter or an arc putter, the face on this putter mimics the path."

loop-E-1-Bottom-Face-518.jpg The E-Series ($295) includes mallet (shown), back-radiused blade and parallel-backed blade designs. A weight screw in the heel allows for three possible head weights (359, 365 and 374 grams).

How is his name pronounced? Like in the Ford Edsel without he "s"? Like in e-dell as in farmer in the dell with a long 'E' sound? Like in e-dell as in farmer in the dell with a short 'E' sound? Like in the Swiss flower edelweiss? Or some other pronunciation. Reason I ask is that I'd like to use his correct name when talking about his putters? Inquiring minds what to know. BTW, I'm thinking real hard about on of these putters (not necessarily the E series)

I've alwayspronounce it like A, but I think it's actually C. ;)

(I've heard people use B as well though)

Be nice if I didn't have to drive 4 hours to an Edel fitter.  I really would like to explore getting fit for Edel Wedges and maybe in a few years a putter.  But $300 for a putter is a lot of money, lol.  I spent $300 on my entire set of irons!

So he didn't read golfweek-drive-for-dough-should-be-the-new-motto or LSW, I guess.

Yes.

There are things that are always better left not said in a forum..

The way I look at it, if the current putter that I was fitted for by "Edel" helps me aim straight, and control my distance.. then this e-series or what ever should really not concern me.. i.e.  no way I'm paying for another putter for a long time :)

I listened to the video and the winner is.... Like in e-dell as in farmer in the dell with a short 'E' sound? (with the emphasis on dell). I can see an Edel putter with vangator stamped on it! :-) (Not for a while though. I'm putting my last of 3 daughters thru college and still have one more wedding to pay for. Who made up these wedding rules where the brides father pays thru the nose? :-(

I asked a local Edel fitter what he thought about the e series standing against a wall with other Edel putters...

Q: "What do you think of them?"

A: "Not much."

Seems like Edel is trying to expand into the off the shelf "unfitted" putter market, there's nothing wrong with expanding their product offering.  There are a limited number of Edel fitters throughout the country so in areas where there isn't coverage he isn't selling any product.

If that's true, then they got a lot of work to do, I believe.  I love (love!!) my Edel putter.  But not for its looks.  I love it because it works for me, and because of that, I've grown fond of how it looks. ;)  But if I'm just buying off the shelf, then Edel's have a whole lot of catching up to do to meet the looks of the shiny big name putters they're going to be sharing shelf space with.

I don't think he is expanding at all ... I think at times that David tinkers, and the e series, I thought, was part of that Faldo line - before they rapidly broke up. He did a limited series of Ping, Bullseye, Scotty "flattery" putters, and there are a few remaining... But the e series and DiVincenzo mallet, I believe, fell flat, and were at a sale price for some time...

I think Dave tinkers... look at his handcrafted watch, only $2,495.

    • To flog this subject even further, if that's even possible, this article from Golf Monthly just appeared today in one of my news feeds. Written by a golf writer in the UK who I never heard of, he's basically saying that there should be only 3-5 rounds from the most recent 20 that should count towards the average and only competitive rounds should count. He claims the erratic scorers would have less of an advantage than they do now. He makes a lot of references to "club golfers" in the UK being the ones who are mostly dissatisfied. https://share.google/qmZZBEoJvOxHxJGil  In my experience with my league where we have golfers with indexes ranging from 5 to 40, looking at the weekly results from the past two years, I can detect no pattern that would substantiate the claim that the current system gives an unfair advantage to either erratic golfers (aren't we all?) or higher handicappers. Apparently though, at least in the UK, this seems to be "a thing."
