I feel like its very slow but progress is being made in my golf swing. I feel like I have the setup/posture/grip areas down pretty good down. I feel like my backswing is solid and on plane. My golf instructor feels like I have one big item to "get over the humpDo". I have a hard time getting the concept of turning all the way through on the downswing and of course the negative reaction to that is I use my hands too much because the club has to get to the ball somehow.

Does anyone have any tip or thought process to help them make sure they are turning their bodies through the ball in the downswing? Something that has helped a little bit is I think about finishing high above my shoulders. This almost forces your to turn through....

Without seeing your swing, I'd suggest flaring your feet. The problem with forcing the finish is just that; there are people out there who hit the ball, turn to their natural finish, then add more to fake a full finish. You should probably make better use of this http://thesandtrap.com/t/77339/my-swing-lhagsjr :-)

One feel that may help, make your backswing and once you reach the top (A4), immediately turn your chest to face the target as FAST as you can. Ignore all your other body parts and just turn your chest back to the target.

Head down to your favorite golf store, or call before going, ask if they have a warm up aids like the F-4 swing warm up items.

These items will help develop the core muscles and soon you will begin to feel yourself using your body.

If you are not turning through the ball, your downswing turn rates are off, meaning your hips are nearly open enough at impact.

If you are not turning through the ball, your downswing turn rates are off, meaning your hips are NOT nearly open enough at impact.

I hate those training aids, and everything I've read about them says that they only really train you to swing slowly. I think they found that swinging with those weighted donuts in baseball makes you swing slower, too.

In 2011 The Wall Street Journal reported a study from the University of Hawaii that showed using a bat doughnut actually decreased a batter's speed at the plate after warming up with a baseball doughnut.[4] Researchers claim the use of a baseball doughnut can change the muscles recruited and therefore creates inefficient hitting mechanics. A study conducted by California State University, Fullerton found that recreational baseball players warming-up with a light and normal weight bat produced faster bat velocity compared to weighted bat warm-ups.[5] Most research studies have found that the weighted bat doughnut has a positive mental effect yet negative physical effect. The "kinesthetic illusion" created by the bat doughnut makes players believe they are swinging the standard bat post warm-up with the bat doughnut when the subsequent swings are in fact, slower[6] This effect influences batters hitting mechanics and timing of swing.

If you swing a heavy or lighter club, I've read that you want it to be within about 15% of your normal club weight too because otherwise you're training yourself poorly.

I've found over the years that the best shots I seem to hit are from trouble situations. Maybe I have to hit a shot through a 5 foot gap etc. I will take my address and really concentrate on seeing my club hit the ball and follow through hard on my target line (avoids the quack hook and pulls). I've carried that over to my normal swings and I hit it pretty much where I want it to go. I find with that hard follow through, my weight is almost entirely on my left side at the finish. It's not a real fast swing. I really concentrate on not allowing my right hand to come over my left too much if at all. Similar to a Moe Norman follow through but not quite as funky. I've also found that when I concentrate so hard on the ball, I can tense up with too quick of a transition. I have to remind myself constantly. If I hit a bad shot, it is because my swing was too quick at the top (wanting to get extra a$$ in the shot). My driver speed is 105+, but my irons are more in the 90's by design. I take one extra club than I've hit in the past with less of a backswing. I depend on high spin balls to keep on the green.

One thing that helps me turn fully is trying to bring my right knee to touch my left knee on the down swing.

I look at that as an effect. Maybe the hips aren't open enough at impact this retarding the shoulder turn thru. I think being more specific would help more than just "make your knees touch"

What I find helpful is to focus hitting a spot in front of the ball, this way I get thru the ball.

I often lose my follow through and stop premature when I stare at the back of the ball.

Even the top ridge edge or bottom ridge edge is better to stare at then the back of ball.

give yourself a head start start with the feet open, similar to Trevino, turn onto your left foot then hit hard with the right side allowing the weight to flow forward, allow the head to turn to face the target early similar to stenson, duval and sorenstam hope this helps.

When I was young I use to hit the ball really hard. This seem to limit my swing thought the ball. I just think hit no more than 85% force with my bigger muscles and this make me swing fully

    • Very respectfully, I disagree.  I still believe there’s a small kernel of truth to my theory.  Hey, you, iacas and many others here are extremely knowledgeable, know the game inside out, know the tour inside out.  I’m just a schmuck who posted a take, admittedly unsupported and not up to reasonable high standards. There’s a background to my take - I’ll attempt to briefly describe it.  Back when Rory first came on tour, I thought he was great - most folks did, his talent was undeniable, and his youthful happy go lucky looking demeanor made him even more likable.  And he won early, fast - at the highest levels. And then the physical workouts started.  That was cool, man he’s looking good.  And as it went along, was even a bit shocking.  But all was still good in the Rory fan club. But as a few years rolled along and the majors stopped, folks like me started to question the effect of the physical build up.  (raising my hand here - - folks like me were probably concentrating 95% on the majors record, and failing to acknowledge his stellar play overall) The matches with Patrick Reed...  Somewhere around that time, Patrick became “the most hated man on tour”.  Raising my hand again, not sure if that timing is accurate, or even if that moniker was deserved.  But when Rory got into the screaming flex-off, it definitely detracted from the earlier Rory likability.  It’s kinda like he was lowering himself to Patrick’s level.  Not so great, for me at least. As the mid 2010s rolled along, and the majors drought continued, and the near misses at the Masters happened, the dreaded ‘choke’ perception inevitably raised its head and persisted.  I joined in with the chorus, not disliking Rory, but certainly questioning his ability to close the Masters or any other major.  Rightfully or wrongly, it was there. Then LIV came along.  As that developed, I saw the anti-LIV sentiment develop along with it, and I took offense to it.  My thought - these guys are being offered life changing $$, and the anti-LIV folks are trying to stop them from getting it. And then when Rory rose to ‘lead’ the anti-LIV sector, that really rubbed me the wrong way.  The press conferences, the parking lot shouting match - it just all seemed really distasteful to me.  And it seemed far far away from the early Rory, who I really liked. So all that (in my own mind) led me down the “Rory will never win.. yada yada”.  Not based on any real statistical analysis.  Not taking into account the incredible stats and winning record he had amassed. Purely based on perception and cultural silliness.  AND - the physical thing, which as I mentioned, I think there’s a tiny kernel of merit there. So - fast forward to Rory’s post win press conference.  THAT was the old Rory I remembered!  The totally cool guy, humble, forthright, honest, self deprecating.  He’s probably been like that all along.  And he’s certainly backed off the hard core anti-LIV persona, at least in public. That’s it.  Just a stupid unsupported take from a dumbsh*t golf fan.  For me, this was the most exciting major since the Tiger era. I really thought it would be a gladiator death match between Rory and Bryson.  I’m surprised that Bryson fell off - - I thought he was well-set-up to handle the pressure.  I’m sure he’ll be there many times in the future, along with Rory.
    • I've been watching golf for 35 years and I've seen my fair share of exciting events, but I cannot recall ever watching so much up and down in the fortunes of one player in one round of golf. How good the good shots were and how bad the bad shots were and how he was leading, then not, then leading again, then way clear, then tied, then behind, then leading, then in a playoff, then winning. Heck I aged just watching it on the TV - Rory must have gone through some stuff out there. Just incredible. Consider that Rory had two double bogeys, three bogeys, six birdies, and Rose made only 4 pars, 4 bogeys, and 10 birdies. 10! Round that place? Mind officially blown.
    • Yea it doesn’t suck. I didn’t score well but most of it came down to short game and putting. I had 3 holes I can directly blame bad long game shots on. I’m just trying to hedge my bets. If I don’t make it as a professional golfer, I could be a fitness model as a backup plan.
