  1. 1. You are given an invitation to colonize Mars. Would you go?

My knees get weak looking out the window of tall buildings.  I don't think space flight is for me.

But I can totally understand why people would go for it.  If you think colonization has a viable future.

Isn't there an international law preventing us from polluting outer space?

That's a good one, however I believe "Dilution is the Solution to Pollution".

My answer is a definite no.

Also I do not think that this is colonization, when they are sending up a very small number of people  and they all know they will die there.

No vote for me!

But I could nominate quite a few folks, mainly politicians and other barbarians, whom we could send and be better for it! O:)

I voted yes. **** it, why not? Nothing like this will happen in my lifetime anyway, might as well sound enthusiastic about it. ;-)

That's what the volunteers think as well. It does sound cool, but there are lots of technical issues that have not been worked out yet. It is uncharted territory.

If they had the internet back in the 1400s and someone started a thread if we'd be interested in sailing with Columbus, I'd have given out a massive "hell nawwwwwwww" in Spanish or Italian. The same applies here. God speed to those who go if and when they go, but I'm not the type for this kind of mission.

Because, eff that! That's why not! No way am I voluntarily moving to a place my body isn't made to withstand. That would be like asking "Who wants to go colonize the bottom of the ocean?" Or ... "Who wants to colonize the northeast part of the United states?"

Hardly.

You knew there was oxygen and fresh water on the other side of the world. And possibly even food. And trees to build with and earth to grow things in.

The same does not apply.

It is nothing at all like that.

In the race of life, always back self-interest. At least you know it's trying.

I should've said that Mars One was never going to work. We agree there. But a manned mission to Mars that could successfully bring the trained astronauts back in one piece would be pretty awesome and will probably happen one day.

I'd be pretty surprised if humanity was ever able to colonize it, but a few hundred years from now, who knows what humans will come up with.

We would need to reengineer our bodies for the lower gravity, terraform the planets surface so the average temperature doesn't freeze CO2, figure out a way to grow plants, etc. It's way better to optimize the use of our current planet, and clean it up. Every $100,000 we spend on Mars is $1 here. Money will go a lot farther spending it here to fix our planet than sending corpses to the Martian surface.

    • after some years experimenting around, I've settled on a mixed bag of mostly Pat Simmons vintage Tiger Sharks (the ones with the blue enamal on back of the clubheads): 3 thru 9 iron, + 3 wedges (PW, sand, chipper). Those super heavy clubheads really help me get my swing down and thru the ball. Also I carry an old Taylor 18-degree rescue club, 17-degree and 14 degree ImagineGolf metalwoods, and the famous Pat Simmons "alien" 1-iron. Finally a real brick-on-a-stick, the big-headed Bettinardi Ben Hogan model putter which is excellent for taking the break out of short putts and getting the ball hole high on long ones. Wait....is that 15 clubs? Oh well....
    • this topic brought to mind one my favorite golf-spectator memories. Back when, living in Santa Barbara CA, parked in my yellow cab just behind the 10th tee  (c. 380 yard par 4) at SB Muni golf course while eating lunch. A twosome comes by, and first up is this fat little mexican guy who takes a kinda squirelly practice swing, then addresses the ball and bashes a long, high, perfectly straight drive up to w/in about 5 yards of the green. Other guy is dressed to the 9's, pulls out what looks like a $300 driver....and hits a maybe 150-yard pop fly. Slams clubhead to the ground and yells, "it's fat! It's fat! Everything is fat today!!"  And that's how I learned what a "fat" shot is.
    • day 57. Technique practice in the net. Really trying to slow down.
    • It may not be surprising that in the previous 7,064 posts, this particular point has been discussed. To which I will counter: If we're talking about results, why only the majors? Unless you know something that I don't, neither of us are in any position to judge whether Woods or Nicklaus lived their overall life better, not that such a thing is even objectively measurable, nor is it relevant to the discussion.
    • As we've had to tell other people, the topic is which is the better GOLFER, not human being.
