Or approximately 1.5 stones.

Quote:
After battling a neck injury throughout the 2014 season, Jason Dufner had a tough decision to make.
"If I didn't do it, I wasn't going to be able to play golf," Jason Dufner said of his weight loss last month. "I missed the playoffs, missed the defense of my PGA Championship. More than likely missed playing in the Ryder Cup because of it. So, not really ready to give the game of golf up yet."
And so Dufner knuckled down. He didn't really change his workout plan but he completely overhauled his diet, which he says is 80 percent of the reason for his weight loss. He went 11 straight weeks without any fast food, chocolate or peanut butter, and continues pretty much gluten-free nowadays: No sugar, processed foods, alcohol or soda. He lost 20 pounds in all.

Wow that's a big difference in those two pictures. Good for him on loosing the weight. I need to take a page out of his book. I haven't been very on point with my eating habits lately.

Yea, I wouldn't have recognized him today at the Honda unless his name was written on his bag. Of course, after I saw him swing, I knew it was him, but he's lost quite a bit of weight.

I wonder how his game will be impacted losing that much weight over a short time period?  His body build looks different, but no one will ever accuse him of doing PED's that's for sure.

Now it is time for him to hit the gym. I'm happy for him!

I rapidly lost 30 lbs about 4 yrs ago. I was a pretty good stick then and I was concerned actually, that it would affect my game. On the one hand, I thought I'd be faster so that would help, on the other I figured I was not as strong so that would hurt. As it turned out, there was no impact either way. Didn't notice any change in distance with any club. Maintainted my short game. Total non-event. I gained back 20 or so lbs since, which sux, and I'm not as good as I was then but that's another issue altogether.

That looks like more than 20lbs off...and no, he doesn't look healthy

Agree. at least about the 20 pounds. That looks more like a 30-40 pound weight loss.

Most often when a player loses that much weight their game goes south.

Not to be snarky, but do you have any credible source for that info? I'm just curious. I know what Carl Petterson said, but that's certainly not enough data to classify as "most often"

Jack did alright when he slimmed down.

As I recall, David Duval had his great stretch also after slimming down.

Well I'm sure not credible, but I've seen it happen a bit too, even with the pros. First time when I was a kid and Leonard Thompson lost a ton of weight, played crappy, gained the weight back and found his game. Petterson too. Monty another one.

My theory is that some folks have swings that generate distance mostly from shifting weight, esp when they are heavy. Lose the weight, they have nothing to shift anymore and can't hit it out of their shadow. Gain the weight back and the distance comes back.

More rotary swingers not so much of an issue maybe?

Guess its hard to distinguish the people like Jack or Duval that lost weight and got really fit, vs the guys like Thompson or Monty who prob just lost weight and didn't really get that more fit, just thinner :-) . Without much thought I'd prob lump Dufner into group 2, hope he is fitter now too.

Maybe it's psychosomatic? A small percentage of people can't curtail the appetite, can only hold it off so long, it affects their everyday competency in doing things? Once they've gone back to their usual eating habits, things are back to normal?

If usual eating habits means eating more calories than you burn, then yes you'll gain weight.

    • Day 11: did mirror work for a while. Worked on the same stuff.
    • I'm not sure you're calculating the number of strokes you would need to give correctly. The way I figure it, a 6.9 index golfer playing from tees that are rated 70.8/126 would have a course handicap of 6. A 20-index golfer playing from tees that are rated 64/106 would have a course handicap of 11. Therefore, based on the example above, assuming this is the same golf course and these index & slope numbers are based on the different tees, you should only have to give 5 strokes (or one stroke on the five most difficult holes if match play) not 6. Regardless, I get your point...the average golfer has no understanding of how the system works and trying to explain it to people, who haven't bothered to read the documentation provided by either the USGA or the R&A, is hopeless. In any case, I think the WHS as it currently is, does the best job possible of leveling the playing field and I think most golfers (obviously, based on the back & forth on this thread, not all golfers) at least comprehend that.
    • Day 115 12-5 Skills work tonight. Mostly just trying to be more aware of the shaft and where it's at. Hit foam golf balls.
    • Day 25 (5 Dec 25) - total rain day, worked on tempo and distance control.
    • Yes it's true in a large sample like a tournament a bunch of 20 handicaps shouldn't get 13 strokes more than you. One of them will have a day and win. But two on one, the 7 handicap is going to cover those 13 strokes the vast majority of the time. 20 handicaps are shit players. With super high variance and a very asymmetrical distribution of scores. Yes they shoot 85 every once in a while. But they shoot 110 way more often. A 7 handicap's equivalent is shooting 74 every once in a while but... 86 way more often?
