Thoughts?

Women with beautiful bodies... somewhat common. Women who can play golf at the level Lexi, Stacy, Inbee and Lydia do.. not so much.

Most of the top women in golf are average looking at best -Lexi being an exception. But who gives a shit? T's and A's ain't why I watch the LPGA.

Damn, I must be getting old.

What they did is working though? People are talking about golf whether they like or dislike the cover. Personally I dont find Lexi attractive, yet I follow her and others on Instagram for the golf part. Either way, they've stirred up some buzz about their magazine.

Well I guess that depends on what kind of attention they're after. I'm no longer interested in golf magazines but I'd be more apt to pick one up if there was an article featuring Na Yeon Choi's swing than her boobs or ass.

If I wanted to see naked or near-naked women, there's the beach, adult magazines, and internet porn. Why would I buy a golf magazine for that? Because it's Lexi?

Oddly enough, I find her less attractive now that I've seen her partially exposed. Not very curvy, especially in the hips. Almost mannish if you don't count the boobs.

She's making a living on her golf and can supplement that living with her looks. Why not cash in when she has the chance? I would bet she got paid a LOT of money for this cover shoot.

Mia Hamm did cheesecake. So did Danica Patrick. Why not an LPGA golfer?

Go, Lexi.

In their defense, that's probably not really an appropriate picture for the "Fitness" issue.

Because they can't have it both ways.

What happens is that they can't expect to be taken seriously as athletes while they accept money for this sort of thing.

It alienates the players who aren't going to be seen in the same way, the income streams are not equitable and you end up with the Kournikova effect.

Or, the greatest players (think Navratilova) earning almost nothing from sponsorship.

Those who can say it's a free country and those who don't are branded as jealous if they criticise.

For the greater good, Lexi should have been saying "I am a golfer. Photograph me playing golf".

Australian Jan Stephenson started this slide decades ago and it continued with Laura Baugh, and then Gulbis.

At least Lexi can play. Which is all the more reason for her to say no. She doesn't need the money.

What about the the Asian superstars (including Ko). They won't be doing it.  Funny that.

The fact of the matter, as shown in the "Branded" documentary, is that men in general don't give  a crap about women's sport, but they do like attractive women.

It's a conundrum.

It has nothing to do with liking fit bodies.

Sometimes you're such an old fuddy duddy.

I have no problem with a woman (or a guy) doing what they can do to promote themselves, promote the sport they play, earn more revenue, etc. It's still tasteful enough in my opinion.

What you see as "two ways" (i.e. having it "both" ways) I see as just living live and making the most of opportunities. Sheesh. The Kournikova effect? She wasn't a major champion. Lexi is. And she has a long career and a lot of upside ahead of her.

Goodness. I have a daughter, and I hope opinions like yours are on the way out.

Do I care about Lexi on the magazine cover? No. Good for her, she obviously chose to do that. Do I care about Suzann Pettersen being nude in ESPN's magazine? No, she made a choice, and good for her for being proud of her body and training.

The fact is that the LPGA needs to exploit the attractiveness of their players to be successful. There is not a built in market for their game like for the PGA. There is a conscious effort by the LPGA to show off their member's bodies and there is nothing wrong with that. Of course these women can be taken seriously even though they show of their bodies. Lexi posing like this and Petterson being in SI last year has done nothing to lessen the fact that they are great golfers. It's all in your mind.

Watch the documentary.

If you want your daughter to make money by showing her chest when she's a couple of years out of school, that's awesome.

No need. You said it's about how men don't care about women's sports. But I never said anything about that, either, so I don't know why you think I'd care.

Way to put words in my mouth. No, sorry, didn't say that. Bizarre classification you have there too "showing her chest."

BTW, I recorded and watched every minute of the LPGA major this weekend… and watched about 15 minutes of the PGA Tour event this year. I also watched nearly four hours of the Drive, Chip, and Putt.

No it's not bizarre. When I said "men" I meant men in general. Not you or me.

You said " Goodness. I have a daughter, and I hope opinions like yours are on the way out."

My opinion is this:

If a magazine came to you and said. "Erik, we've seen some video of your step-daughter on TheSandtrap.com. We think she's got an awesome swing. One of the best we've seen for a girl her age."

In a  few years we'd be interested in doing a story about her."

I would hope that you'd say "Why not now?"

And I don't want to labour this because I actually think I must have explained myself poorly in my other post, but If the opinion  that a female athlete should be recognised for her athleticism is equated to be that of a dinosaur, I'll happily wear the tag.

The whole point of the documentary  - and it's a good one, most of the ESPN 30 for 30 ones are - is that what some see as progessiveness and liberation is anything but.

These guys are good. These chicks are hot. Not the same. And not fair. And, ultimately, not commercial.

I get what you're saying but you're not going to find much agreement in these forums though I agree more than I disagree with you.

Lexi is a great golfer, imo it's takes away from her golfing ability to objectify her on the cover of a golf magazine topless except for a towel that covers her breasts.  I'm pretty sure Sei Young Kim or inbee Park wouldn't be asked to appear as Lexi does on the cover.

My daughter is a beautiful girl that is studying in college to become a pediatric oncologist.  If a medical magazine wanted to do a feature on female doctors in oncology I wouldn't expect them to be asked to take a picture wearing swimsuits for the article, nor would I encourage her to pose for such a picture.

Stop twisting words or intentionally misleading or whatever it is you're doing. My use of the word "bizarre" referred to you classifying the cover in question as "showing her chest." It had nothing to do with the men in the documentary saying that they don't care about women's sports or whatever.

You said "Goodness. I have a daughter, and I hope opinions like yours are on the way out."

My opinion is this:

If a magazine came to you and said. "Erik, we've seen some video of your step-daughter on TheSandtrap.com. We think she's got an awesome swing. One of the best we've seen for a girl her age."

I would hope that you'd say "Why not now?"

I don't know what you're trying to say there, but it does not seem relevant to this conversation. She's not a professional golfer looking to promote herself, make money, drive interest in the LPGA Tour, or other things like that.

And I don't want to labour this because I actually think I must have explained myself poorly in my other post, but If the opinion that a female athlete should be recognised for her athleticism is equated to be that of a dinosaur, I'll happily wear the tag.

And why should a female athlete only be recognized for her athleticism? And how is being the cover model and showing off her body, of which she's ostensibly proud as it's the thing she uses in expressing her athleticism, not being "recognized for her athleticism"?

The whole point of the documentary is that what some see as progessiveness and liberation is anything but. These guys are good. These chicks are hot. Not the same. And not fair. And, ultimately, not commercial.

I don't care about the documentary. At the end of the day, you're passing judgment despite not being a young female golfer with a major on her record already. You don't like it. That doesn't make it wrong.

How on earth does it "take away from her golfing ability"? Do they remove one tournament win or add a stroke to her scorecard every time she does something some old man somewhere does not approve of?

Inbee is not as "fit" as Lexi, and the issue is the Fitness issue. Lexi is, one could conclude, proud of her body. At least this year we don't have a TV host (Holly) or a girlfriend/party girl (Paulina). At least this year we have a golfer.

If a medical magazine wanted to do a feature on female doctors in oncology I wouldn't expect them to be asked to take a picture wearing swimsuits for the article, nor would I encourage her to pose for such a picture.

Straw man. It's the fitness issue. I highly doubt the oncology monthly publications have "fitness" issues.

    • Day 49. Played 9 from tees a bit beyond my comfort zone and was humbled. Hit a couple good shots so will take that at least.
    • +12 47, and never lost a ball or had a penalty. Got the snap hooks off the tee for the first 3 holes. So, playing the punch out game. Probably had like 20 putts. Bad short game day. The greens were weirdly firm but slow. I just don’t get spin out of the rough. I had a SW, with good height hit middle half of the green and end up almost off the back of the green. I know what I was doing with the full swing. Bad habits creeping in.
