Your tax dollars brought an event to the course that are bringing millions of dollars to the area.

And the course doesn't seem to need your $169 - they seem to sell the vast majority of their tee times.

No, the course doesn't. I helped pay to build it, but I'll never get to play the course without sacrificing playing 5 other rounds that I'd play during a given month. It's a public course run by the county parks and rec dept. Damn.

And I don't mind brown. And while I do understand a player of your caliber welcomes a challenge like this, the average player would be slaughtered on this course.

As someone who's played golfer for 3 years I have no interest in playing CB but know enough about golf to realize that CB is not representative of golf courses in the US.

So what?

I don't have an issue with brown, I have issue with a course that penalizes what most would consider a good golf shot.  I can fully understand why someone at your level or even near single digit handicap would want to play it but bogey or higher handicappers would get slaughtered on this course.

What's considered a good golf shot?

If you take #1 at Chambers Bay. You'd most likely aim more right because you know that 1/4 of the left side of the green is at a severe slope that can kick or roll the ball off the green. I wouldn't even consider it part of the green. Like false fronts. You play to the part you know you get a GIR because you'd rather have a 30-40 FT putt over a 50-60 yard pitch shot.

In the end, the good golf shot is knowing where the severe mounds are that can cause you problems. If an area kicks you away from the green, then take that into consideration. If you hit a shot over there, then it isn't a good shot.

If you have a 15-18 handicap, you'd probably play the 6000 yard tees. The course is rated by the USGA is 70.1 rating with a slope of 127. By the USGA and their handicap system it isn't that difficult if you play the correct tees.

Heck I think this course gives you plenty of areas you can miss it and it leaves you a great spot. How many courses you know allows you to miss the green long and lets you use the banks and slopes to get a GIR?

I would say he needs to get to even and then it's game on tomorrow. Even par and he'll be in the top ten going into tomorrow.

With the way the greens are already dried out, I would say even for him is definitely a good goal today.

And as I said, this very tournament is bringing millions and millions of dollars to your area. You're benefitting as well.

Also, my taxes pay for a lot of things I don't use myself.

And to an area of the country that has a lot of great golf but doesn't get much attention.

Anyone see westwoods interview on sky ?

No but I saw the tweet where he wasn't happy about the 18th hole as a par 4.

I'm gonna go out on a limb here and say Phil Mickelson will NOT be winning this U.S Open.

How many announcers does Fox have? Holy talking heads, Batman. Show golf!

This has got to be the absolute worst golf coverage ever.

Fox sucks.

I don't think that's going out on a limb. I'll say that's a safe bet.

I'm looking for Rory to make a big move today.  Morning tee time, and he's capable of beating the field by 4 or 5 shots on any given day.  I'm looking for -4 from Rory today (even for the tourney), while the lead at the end of the day settles at around -3.

On track so far.

Oosthuizen was at +7 just 12 holes ago. He shot -4 on his back nine Friday late morning.  -2 today for his first 3 holes today (Sat morning).  So -6 in 12 holes is possible in morning conditions.

The reason I think anyone can win ,even TW. Is the fact this isn't the Masters where everyone knows this course. No one does, which means anything can happen. I am really looking forward to a wild 4 (maybe more) days.

I think the real question is are you watching the tournament still? :)

    • Day 11: did mirror work for a while. Worked on the same stuff.
    • I'm not sure you're calculating the number of strokes you would need to give correctly. The way I figure it, a 6.9 index golfer playing from tees that are rated 70.8/126 would have a course handicap of 6. A 20-index golfer playing from tees that are rated 64/106 would have a course handicap of 11. Therefore, based on the example above, assuming this is the same golf course and these index & slope numbers are based on the different tees, you should only have to give 5 strokes (or one stroke on the five most difficult holes if match play) not 6. Regardless, I get your point...the average golfer has no understanding of how the system works and trying to explain it to people, who haven't bothered to read the documentation provided by either the USGA or the R&A, is hopeless. In any case, I think the WHS as it currently is, does the best job possible of leveling the playing field and I think most golfers (obviously, based on the back & forth on this thread, not all golfers) at least comprehend that.
    • Day 115 12-5 Skills work tonight. Mostly just trying to be more aware of the shaft and where it's at. Hit foam golf balls.
    • Day 25 (5 Dec 25) - total rain day, worked on tempo and distance control.
    • Yes it's true in a large sample like a tournament a bunch of 20 handicaps shouldn't get 13 strokes more than you. One of them will have a day and win. But two on one, the 7 handicap is going to cover those 13 strokes the vast majority of the time. 20 handicaps are shit players. With super high variance and a very asymmetrical distribution of scores. Yes they shoot 85 every once in a while. But they shoot 110 way more often. A 7 handicap's equivalent is shooting 74 every once in a while but... 86 way more often?
