I guess Tony likes losing money to Spieth!

Spieth has taken more money from Tony Romo than he can count

By Keely Levins

If you're from Texas, you're probably a Cowboys fan and Jordan Spieth is no exception. However, he's not so big a Cowboys fan that he won't take money on the golf course from the team's star quarterback Tony Romo.

They've played together in the AT&T; Pebble Beach Pro-Am in 2013, where they got on the podium with a third place finish. But that's not the only time they've played.

The two obviously play for a bit of money whenever they tee it up. When asked if he knew how much he has made off Romo in their matches,  CBS Sports reports Spieth laughed, saying "I don't know. I can't even count that high."

Here Spieth is, winning the Masters, setting records, smooching his pretty girlfriend, stealing the hearts of everyone in the world, flying around in a private plane, and on the side he's taking Romo for all he's worth. The kid's on a hot streak. That much is for sure.

Uh oh, I guess Spieth isn't a good role model for the kids anymore. He promote gambling.

Gosh I think he's worse that Tiger Woods now

Wonder what age he started gambling on the golf course?  For me, I recall it being around 14 and in many ways I think it is good prep for tournament golf.

Tour players do it all the time during practice rounds - Mickelsen is always talking about it.

I don't recall saying "all Tour Players do it".....if you're going to quote me, please be accurate and please show me where I say it was "okay".

I'll wait.

But since you asked, I'm surprised the PGA Tour allows it. I can see where it might get out of hand, influence competition,  just like MLB doesn't allow betting on baseball.

PGA Tour doesn't allow it. They just don't enforce it.

FINANCIAL INTEREST BY A PLAYER IN ANOTHER PLAYER; GAMBLING; BRIBES; GIFTS; DOPING A player shall not have any financial interest, either direct or indirect, in the performance or the winnings of another player in any event cosponsored, coordinated, approved or otherwise sanctioned by the PGA TOUR, whether through purse-splitting, prize money “insurance,” financial assistance, bets or otherwise. Any player who violates the provisions of this paragraph shall be 45 subject to a suspension from tournament play for a minimum period of two seasons. A player shall not do any of the following:

2. Gamble or play cards on the premises where a PGA TOUR cosponsored or coordinated tournament is being played.

3. Associate with or have dealings with persons whose activities, including gambling, might reflect adversely upon the integrity of the game of golf.

4. Bet money or anything of value on a golf tournament or similar event, whether or not the player is in such competition.

I guess the warm up rounds are not really considered part of the event or directly related to towards the performance during the tournament.

The PGA is as hypocritical as any of the other leagues (NBA-MLB-NFL). They wont punish the major stars for doing things they are quite aware they are doing. Many of these guys gamble on the practice round and they would not dare suspend them for it.

They need to keep their cash cows on TV to get the audience.

Then again if you are someone like dustin Johnson and do something as un-wholesome as coke, you are gone!

Why, because the PGA wants to be a very clean, family friendly event. They cant have any adulterer or coke heads.

So if you get caught, make sure it is for gambling!

OP is now shocked and thinks it is odd for pro golfers to betting on practice matches? the PGA should enforce some form of anti gambling crusade on tour? LOL what rock do you live under?

As long as there is golf, and as long as there are practice rounds there is going to be betting on it!! by both the players and others there is no possible way to stop...kind of funny actually.

They put money on the line to make things interesting - it forces them to focus.

My son started playing for quarters a hole when he was 14 -- I think it helps a player's attitude and his play. They enjoy it. He would get out of impossible situations - "See that hole up in the trees? I'm gonna' put it through there..." and he did.

Since he was all district for 2 years in hs and just finished one out on all regional, I think it helped.

LOL at anyone for commenting about the evils of betting on golf. There are a million different bets that can be made on this fine game, and I've lost at most of them at one time or another.

My youngest son has taken up the game for fun and he has played some with me and a few buddies. My buddies have beer bet challenges and a standard beer bet on the last hole. Anyway my 13 year old son is playing 9 holes with me and says he wants to bet - so we make a beer bet, closest to the hole, on #9, from about 85 yards out wins.

I will tell you drinking that root beer is one of my fondest memories from last year.

Players play, tough players win!

The numbers on his checks are pretty important and they tend to be pretty high.

I hope the guy has good financial advisers.  It is possible to make a ton of money in tournament golf and still end up in severe financial straits.  Just read Jack's 1996 auto-bio about how he was technically bankrupt and was only saved by the fact that his banks didn't want to put him into bankrupcy because he was who he was so they held off.  Muirfield Village could have been a huge financial disaster for Jack.  On the good side, the financial pressures motivated him to go out and play more, and more seriously.  Without his financial issues I doubt we see the amazing 1986 Masters.

But then again, what the hell do I know?

59 watch today.

finished up at -9 on the day.   Always bugged me when he left college so early & I was a doubter --- BUT --- have to admit with regard to his play in the last 6 months or so, the kid's legit ...

    • Day 11: did mirror work for a while. Worked on the same stuff.
    • I'm not sure you're calculating the number of strokes you would need to give correctly. The way I figure it, a 6.9 index golfer playing from tees that are rated 70.8/126 would have a course handicap of 6. A 20-index golfer playing from tees that are rated 64/106 would have a course handicap of 11. Therefore, based on the example above, assuming this is the same golf course and these index & slope numbers are based on the different tees, you should only have to give 5 strokes (or one stroke on the five most difficult holes if match play) not 6. Regardless, I get your point...the average golfer has no understanding of how the system works and trying to explain it to people, who haven't bothered to read the documentation provided by either the USGA or the R&A, is hopeless. In any case, I think the WHS as it currently is, does the best job possible of leveling the playing field and I think most golfers (obviously, based on the back & forth on this thread, not all golfers) at least comprehend that.
    • Day 115 12-5 Skills work tonight. Mostly just trying to be more aware of the shaft and where it's at. Hit foam golf balls.
    • Day 25 (5 Dec 25) - total rain day, worked on tempo and distance control.
    • Yes it's true in a large sample like a tournament a bunch of 20 handicaps shouldn't get 13 strokes more than you. One of them will have a day and win. But two on one, the 7 handicap is going to cover those 13 strokes the vast majority of the time. 20 handicaps are shit players. With super high variance and a very asymmetrical distribution of scores. Yes they shoot 85 every once in a while. But they shoot 110 way more often. A 7 handicap's equivalent is shooting 74 every once in a while but... 86 way more often?
