  1. 1. Is The Players Championshp a Major?

    • Yes, it already is, whether or not anyone actually calls it one.
      10
    • No, and it never will be nor should it be.
      41
    • Not now, but it will be one day.

    • I don't know....it's too tough a question.

I think the ending of The Players this year is certainly a very strong argument that this tournament is already a major. There is no better, more complete test of golf in the world today, and the drama and excitement of this year's event was as good as any golf championship I've watched in my lifetime.

The Players has the field, the money and is developing it's own history.  Unfortunately, from the small sample I'm reading above, Sawgrass is not Pinehurst or St. Andrews or Pebble or even Harbor Town.  And now the Players is so closely associated with Sawgrass that it may never become a major if the perception of the course doesn't change.

Maybe they could develop an article of clothing to give to the winner along with the Waterford trophy.  Or a customized golf cart with the turn signal hardwired to on because it's Florida (just kidding!!).

Unbelievable - or perhaps not....

A great finish on a golf course which is in no way a "major" venue and some people think it is on its way to becoming a major. Or, in some ridiculously extreme cases, thinking it IS a major.

It is not a major. It will never be a major. And on that layout it should never be a major. Let's accept that.

Had Fowler hit it into the water on one of the last three times he played it it would be talked about as a disappointing and anti-clmactic tournament.

Let's maintain some perspective.

Yup.  That's why this finish was (likely) such an aberration.  Any one of those guys hits any ball into the water in the playoff and the "great finish" is considerably less great.

Also, if Kisner made his putt on 18 in the playoff it would be considered a lot less historic by many as well.

C'mon guys.. You are starting to sound like me after a bad round.. Yeah, if I didn't have that quad on 17 I would have been under 100 (or what ever other shoulda coulda woulda scenario). ;)

Plenty of people in the know think quite highly of TPC Sawgrass. As far as water goes, when the wind is up, 12, 13 and 15 at Augusta bring water into play. 13 and 15 at ANGC bring just as much belt tightening as 16 at TPC. I'm not supporting The Players as a major but giving my opinion of TPC Sawgrass as a great course.

Do we need another one in the US? What about the Australian Open (or other events) ... if golf wants to be global it should look at other venues outside of the US for another major?

Totally agree with the above.

Do we need another Major? Not really. But if and when they ever decided that it would be a good idea to have a 5th Major (the season is longer than it used to be - there's an argument that it could handle a 5th Major) the two places that should not be considered as venues would be the Britain and the US.

Golf is a global sport but it has a total 'blind spot' when it comes to growing itself as one. Look at Tennis - yes there's more money in tennis in some countries than others but where are the Majors? In the US, UK, France and Australia. I watch Formula 1 racing and some of the traditional venues in Europe have been dropped in order to spread the sport to the Middle East and Far East. They are global sports and act like them.

Another Major needed? Not sure it is but probably couldn't hurt. In the US? What would be the point in that?!?!?!

I like to think of the four real majors, the Players is one of them, but that always gets me into trouble, so I won't say it.

A-You just did B-This whole thread is about that and C-Not enough people agree to make it so

So someone wins three majors and the Players and that's a Grand Slam, right?

This is not true or false-Just an opinion.

Yes....definitely....if the players didn't hit a series of great shots under pressure, it would have been just an ordinary finish. Can't argue with that.

    • At address? I think so. Downswing and through? IDK. I doubt if a whole lot of golfers, if any at all, deliberately think "I have a 9-iron so I need to bend half an inch more through the downswing compared to my 8 iron".

    • I am listening to 23rd Street.  24 hours a day of cars, trucks, planes, sirens, and neighbors who start lawn mowers at 6:30am. I try to drown it out with 7,600 WAVE music files on a huge USB drive.  Mostly 1950's through 1990's music.
    • Thanks! Evolvr, for sure. My indoors setup is pretty close to ready. I want to add a few more lights as it's a pretty dark place to begin with (old barn). Plan to use my iPhone 14 Pro, 720p 240 FPS. I think I got a tripod somewhere, but I nail everything down so I'll make a small box I can just plop the phone into. That way I know it's always in the same spot and level. How does the setup look in terms of angles and stuff.  I saw that topic and bookmarked it for later. A technique where you want the head to move forward and down? I've been doing that for twenty years! (not on purpose) 😛 Looks fun, I'll certainly try it out. £7000. That's certainly "down the line". What would be a good price? Thanks. I'll probably hold off until at least winter comes and see where we're living at that point. For the next six months I'll combine indoor practice with the range, which helps.
