Does anyone else feel weird when a 70 yr old individual is behind the counter at a fast food joint?

That was a high school job so I don't identify with it...

Actually I feel bad because most likely they are forced to work there due to poor retirement planning or a botched pension plan.  Some may just enjoy working and supplementing their retirement income but it has to be tough to work in those environment and be managed by acne covered teenagers who have little or no respect for them.

Yep, I feel the same sadness. Our society is royally ****ed up when someone can work their ass off for 50+ years and still need to work at McDonald's once they're too old to keep working their ass off at whatever they did before.

Interesting.

When the cost of labor becomes more expensive than the value that a company feels they receive for that labor, it's worth noting that the company always has options.

Something that the "living wage" proponents should remember...

The person making a $7.50 minimum, who clamors for $15, should also consider that at $15 the employer will have lots of other people wanting to work there and the current $7.50 guy probably cannot compete with them and will lose his job and go down to $0.00 per hour.

Work ethic.

But then again, what the hell do I know?

Hmmm... At least robots won't spit in your food. The article almost sounds like its from the onion. I hear that since golf enthusiasts expect perfection from the top players, the PGA is implementing robot players at the start of 2017.

Can you elaborate on that, not sure I get your meaning?

I'm pretty sure that MW is set by the state, so employees can clamor for all they want can't they? At the end of the day it is not them setting that bar.. I'm pretty sure that there is no way MW is at 15 right now.. Quick search yield the following

Yes, that too ... a smorgasbord of feelings ... like a MickeyD's menu.

Botched 401(k), cutback of pensions or no pensions, companies going bankrupt along with pensions, profit sharing/401(k)... it's been tough since the early '80's.

and some just like to work. But would they do this work? How much senior talent is wasted putting burgers in a bag?

In general I think the seniors working at places like McD's get the jobs because they are perceived, rightly or wrongly, as having a better work ethic than HS kids.

It is not them setting the bar, but it is them fomenting (or, rather, being agitated into fomenting) a movement to pressure the governments to raise the minimum to $15.  It is part of the income inequality meme being put forth by the left.

Ha. I'm glad I asked for elaboration as I had totally misinterpreted your original comment!

Lesson learned...

Perhaps McDonald's should replace their CEO with a robot.  It couldn't do any worse and CEO's are very overpaid with respect to their real contribution to companies.

Careful there, robots/computers would probably make even more cold and calculating decisions to increase bottom line than any CEO would.

Baby steps ...

A Hong Kong VC fund has just appointed an algorithm to its board.

Deep Knowledge Ventures, a firm that focuses on age-related disease drugs and regenerative medicine projects, says the program, called VITAL, can make investment recommendations about life sciences firms by poring over large amounts of data.

Just like other members of the board, the algorithm gets to vote on whether the firm makes an investment in a specific company or not. The program will be the sixth member of DKV's board.

VITAL's software was developed by UK-based Aging Analytics.

"[The goal] is actually to draw attention to developing it as an independent decision maker," Deep Knowledge Venture's Charles Groome told BI.

How does the algorithm work?

VITAL makes its decisions by scanning prospective companies' financing, clinical trials, intellectual property and previous funding rounds.

Groome says it has already helped approved two investment decisions (though has not yet cast its first vote), both of which resemble its own function: In Silico Medicine, which develops computer-assisted methods for drug discovery in aging research; and In Silico's partner firm Pathway Pharmaceuticals, which employs a platform called OncoFinder to select and rate personalized cancer therapies.

"It's not what you’d call AI at this stage, but that is the long-term goal," Groome said.
