Hi, I'm new to TST, and didn't find another post about this....

How much and what kind of practice would you recommend prior to playing in a Club Event or League Round ( on the day of the event)?  For example, one bucket of balls at the range prior to the start; just some putting and chipping; a couple practice holes; a few minutes at home hitting into my net earlier in the day, etc?

Hi and welcome to TST!  I might be splitting hairs with the definition, but I don't believe in "practice" on the day of a round - just a warm-up.  I don't want to mess with my swing or put new/different swing thoughts in my head right before I'm going to play.  I like to chip and putt a bit to get a feel for the greens, then hit a few balls (not even a small bucket's worth) with my irons and driver - just enough to get loosened up and get the swing flowing.  I usually end with the driver and try to finish on a couple good shots in a row, just to take that confidence to the first tee with me.

Welcome.

I usually practice with a small bucket.  Don't hit too many range balls before the start of the round as you may tire yourself out too early during the round.

Personally, hitting about 10-20 balls and some chipping and putting is good amount for me.

I don't practice, I warm up. 25 balls or so. Deliberate practice is not the same thing at all..

Thank you all for the replies.  Yes, I probably don't really mean 'practice', just how much warm-up or other such.  I found in the past that if I hit a full bucket, and then started my round that I had expectations on the first tee and usually too many thoughts going on.  I wanted to see what others thought or did.

A small bucket. 15-20 minutes of chipping and putting. Need to work more on those 50 yard shots.

Start off with a set of dynamic stretches and swing motions to loosen up (about 8 minutes). I loosen up a lot faster if the temperature is > 80º F.

Hit some chips, greenside wedges and putts.

Hit maybe 20 full shots to see how I am moving that day, and how the ball is moving. This is full pre-shot routine for each

End up imagining first tee shot, hitting 3x practice.

A small bucket should be enough. Just don't do "rapid fire" practice. Take your time, go through your one simple swing thought for the day and practice a few shots you'll be hitting on the course that day.

I usually stretch out, take a few practice swings, a few chip and putts and get onto the first hole to tee off... probably why i take a few holes to get going!

I need to stretch and prefer if I can follow the following routine hitting 25 balls;

  • 3 short pitches
  • 2 1/2 swing gap wedge
  • 3 full swing gap wedge
  • 5 full swing 7 iron
  • 5 full swing hybrid
  • 5 full swing driver
  • 2 full swing 7 iron

After stretching, I start with chipping and putting.  Then I'll hit a few with a SW, 8 iron, 4 hybrid, 3 wood and driver.  Then I'll finish the small bucket with some LW shots, 1/4, 1/2, and 3/4 swings.

If I start playing without hitting balls, it will take several shots before I get a closer sense of squaring up the club head and hitting it straighter.

    • Is it? I bought the Stack radar to replace my PRGR based on what Stack told me! When I am swinging for speed, the PRGR would miss 50%-80% of my backswings due to a higher speed. The stack seldom misses those- at least for me.
    • As an analyst by nature, I would like to compare the scores under both systems. It is something we can easily do if we have the data. I actually thought the new system was less fair to those whose game was on the decline - like mine! Old: Best 10 of last 20 scores with the .96 multiplier. Course handicap excluded course rating and overall par. New: Best 8/20. Course handicap includes course rating -par. My understanding is Stableford caps scores at Net double bogey like stroke play. If so, handicap should be slower to rise because you are only using 8 versus 10 scores. If I am missing something, I am curious enough to  want to understand what that may be. My home course tees that I play are 72.1/154 now. My best score out here is 82. When my game started to decline, my handicap didn’t budge for 13 rounds because of good scores in my first 8! I know I am an anomaly but my handicap has increased almost 80% in the past few years (with only a few rounds this year). For a few months I knew I was losing every bet because my game was nowhere near my handicap. I suspect I have steamrolled a few nuances but that shouldn’t matter much. When I have modeled this with someone playing the same tees and course, one good round, or return to form, will immediately reduce the handicap by some amount.
