High School match. Can always count on young 'uns getting it on video. Kid hit it a good ways as well. ESPN wants to broadcast it.

It looks to be just below the surface.  Unless I see a still with a ruler showing depth, I would guess maybe 1/2" below.

Fantastic shot. Looks like he played it like a bunker shot.

I would say the ball maybe a few inches underwater at best. Especially if you notice his right foot is just out of the water and his back foot is only about ankle deep. I would say the ball is somewhere in between that.

Looks like not much more than about half the ball is submerged. That's often cited as the recommended max depth to attempt a water shot. Well executed.

Kid is one of those natural athletes who is good at every sport he/she tries. Playing golf and football at Yale. As for the answer to the subject question, according to the press, completely submerged.

Quote:
In Sunday's opening round, he was short with his tee shot to the par-3 17th hole (No. 5 as Cornell's members play the course), and the ball wound up just on the edge of the water hazard but completely submerged.

Looks about fully submerged - but just such that the top of the ball is even with the water surface.

You can almost try and work this out with math.  His left foot is at the waters edge, his right foot looks to be about 4" beneath the surface (based on the relative level of his knees), and the ball is basically centered between the two.  If the slope of the lake bottom was uniform then the bottom of the ball would be roughly 2" below the surface. :-P (Obviously I say almost because we're assuming a few key things there, but it was still fun to attempt)

It's difficult to tell from the camera angle as there is a refractive effect. The ball could be slightly deeper than it "looks" at our angle, and from on top it could look deeper but be shallower. Really nice shot, though. He hit it pretty solid!

At least he remembered not to ground (water?) his club like that other clip going around...

What clip? Now, I'm interested. . .

Thanks.

That was probably 8" of water, or more! Looks like we all owe an apology to @MS256 , and $10 a piece. That would be close to $300?

Yeah that's not 8" of water. You can still see the top of his ferrule.

    • Rory and Bryson are two of my favorites for some time.  This was a great watch.  Poor Rory looked gutted and (heat?) exhausted at the end there.  Bryson play US Open golf - Captain Scramble.  Avoid the blowups and accidentally find a birdie on occasion and it goes far,
    • 2nd shot into a short par 5. I had ~185 left but was just off the fairway to the right with some low tree limbs in front of me. Aimed at the water and hit a punch slice 4 iron that started low under the trees, rose higher as it kept going, cut towards the middle of the green, carried the water and rolled to ~25 feet for an eagle putt. Lipped out the eagle putt but never going to complain about tap in birdies.  It was one of those shots that I've done before and was a perfect yardage gap. I have a punch 4 iron swing that I know goes right at 185, and I can cut the ball much easier than I can draw it, so it was actually a much easier shot for me than it appears to be in the picture. I would have been fine if it would have over cut too, rough isn't very penal here so it would have been an easy chip from short right.  Although to be fair I didn't realize/remember that the water cut in as far into the fairway as it did, I thought it stopped right around the left edge of the green.
    • I absolutely LOVE my new Titliest U505 3 iron.  It was slightly chunky looking at first, but I don't even notice it anymore after just a couple rounds with it. It's super easy to launch it high and I have no issues flighting it down either.  Perfectly fine to hit off the tee for tighter tee shots and for 2nd shots into par 5s. Even the mishits go much further than I think they should, it's quite forgiving.
    • Obviously I'm not you and you have a far more mature swing than mine, but swing length is an issue for me as well if you see my swing thread. What I'm finding is more the difference between arm plane (vertical) and shoulder plane (flat), more the arm runs off (length) uncontrolled. It could be coincidence.
