I am middle-middle class.
I am still paying my mortgage, my student loan and my taxes.

I understand how government is supposed to work.  I think the Senate will go back to the Dems this cycle and the House will remain with the GOP.  Regardless, one cannot underestimate the power of the POTUS, esp in his 1st 2 years.  Obviously, Sanders wouldn't be able to enact a 90% rate that quickly and similarly Cruz wouldn't get his flat tax passed.  But there is a lot a damage a prez can cause with their phone and their pen.

I thought he made it quite clear that he's going to have Mexico pay for it?  It would stand to reason then that he'd also simply have them build it on the Mexico side of the border, because why not?  I doubt he'd need Congress' approval just to stare at Mexico and intimidate them into doing those things.

I can't help but think of Congress as some sort of vestigial organ.  Like nipples on a man.  They're there, sorta interesting to look at.  You think they must have served a useful function at some point, but that was so long ago you can't even really imagine what that function was.

Maybe Rubio's voting record was actually indicative of something good.  Like he recognized that his time was better spent playing Angry Birds or eating barbecue.

I pay my taxes, yet the ABC corp down the street gets a 250 million $ tax break to bring in business for a few years before it moves on to the next location for a better tax break.

Anyhow. Sanders is no more going to get free "public" college for every citizen than Trump is going to get a wall built by Mexico.

But what I think sparks Sanders supporters is that Sanders wants free "public" college for every citizen in order to have an America filled with the best educated citizens (doctors, mechanics, engineers etc...). 
Trump once again is selling a brand of the "best",
Because he has achieved the best utilizing his father's millions on Trump Steaks, sold exclusively at Sharper Image!

The issue I have is with all the added "administration" that everyone seems to feel we "need" is that there is too much of it. Government work should not be more desirable than creating stuff in private industry.

Obviously, I'm biased, but this is the only reason I see having the public pay for anyone's education, anything else should be payed for by the students and their parents.

The current POTUS suggested tuition free public college in return for a service commitment, not including military, which has it's own version of that. It was more in the line of the CCC. I could see this being more palatable, but it won't fly in the current climate. I don't think free will ever be seen here even though it works in some other countries. They are smaller systems. The US is too large and diverse.

Another idea floated was more of an apprentice-type system with industry pitching in to train young people for jobs of the future. They get tuition paid for training and a commitment to those jobs in the industry. It was more of a two year degree suggestion.

The top high school students and athletes in the country already get scholarships and free rides.  Students that get academic scholarships are typically the ones that go on to be doctors and engineers. Those near or below the poverty line qualify for financial aid.   Those who don't qualify for financial aid or scholarships can opt for student loans or the military to pay for their college education.  

Why do mediocre students need a free ride on the backs of tax payers?  We need plumbers, electricians, carpenters, mechanics, etc  This idea that everyone needs to go to college and have it paid for by taxpayers is as ridiculous as Trump thinking Mexico is going to build a wall.

We're the only country to offer scholarships for for things other than scholarly activities.

This is pretty much my thinking. Making college education free isn't really likely to increase the number of people in those higher ranking degrees. If anything, I can see it following the decline of most public school systems where students are there "because they have to be" but don't really put much effort in. Heck, when I went to college, even with the students or their parents paying, many still didn't value the education they were there to get. Just look at the drop out rates of students going to college now... I really agree with what @boogielicious mentioned about apprenticeships and other such programs where people who may not benefit from college can learn a skill/trade that will put them in a much better job market with higher pay and benefits than many lower level college degrees provide. Not everyone is cut out for college, just like not everyone is cut out for physical/manual labor.

This is the system that is currently in place. We have many, many people who take out 6 figure student loans, and then spend the rest of their lives paying them back.
I know people who spent 80K in loans to get a $50K a year job.

And joining the military does not necessarily solve the problem of getting them off the "backs of tax payers"???
You do realize 2 things
1-the military is payed for by Tax dollars
2-the use of food stamps for military personnel has only slightly declined from its all time high in 2014.
( Nearly $104 million of the $6.2 billion in total revenue the commissaries brought in during fiscal year 2013 came from food stamps.)

I would rather pay for everyone to get somekind of education or training,doctor, mechanic etc.... than have to pay food stamps for someone who either never learned a trade or found a decent job.

Face it, we are all paying for people one way or another....
Might as well pay for people to be the best in a field and be utilized by the country.

To make your point, you just directly implied that every student who doesn't get a scholarship or live below the poverty line is mediocre.  Without knowing the actual numbers, I would venture to guess that that category is a huge, huge majority of college students.

Kind a sorta not really. My biz partner's kid is a high school baseball star, top 20 pitcher in the nation with crazy high SAT/ GPA. He committed last fall and they are still paying out of pocket. Lots of provisions in scholarships. Schools all over the country courted this kid, ND, Duke, TCU, Stanford.
