  1. 1. Was Tiger's Slam (winning all four major championships in a row) a "grand slam"?

Oh, I forgot this label. "But what to call it? Some will label it the Tiger Slam. Jack Nicklaus said the Fiscal Slam would be more fitting."

So by the reckoning of a few of you, a player could literally win 6 majors in a row and you still wouldn't give him the grand slam. Β Such a shame that you are so stuck on an arbitrary tag invented by the news media.

Yep. That's the way the cookie crumbles I'm afraid. That's not to say that I wouldn't accept that 6 in a row was a bigger achievement. Just not a Grand Slam. Sorry.

Here's a thought and just as a "what if...?". What would people's opinions on this be if it was, say, Colin Montgomerie or Sergio Garcia who'd done as TW did in '00-'01?

The tried and true, long time definition of a Grand Slam hasn't and should never ever change. It always has and always will be two eggs, two sausage links, two slices of bacon, hash browns and toast. #threadclosed.

Is that eating all at Denny's or can you take it hope to finish it later? I think if you take part of that home and eat it later you would still have completed the grand slam ;)

There is zero logic in any argument that says Tiger did not win the Grand Slam.....none

Most of the time you are all berating the news media for the self-important puffed up, politically correct airheads that they tend to be, yet now you defend the grand slam invention of theirs as if it came down off the mountain with Moses. Β In the next thread you will be lobbying to change a rule which is actually founded in logic and whose procedural implementation has been traditional for more than 250 years. Β Seems to me that there is some puzzling prioritizing on the Trap.

I'm sorry but there's every bit of logic in doing just that, given the accepted definition of what a Grand Slam is.

Nope. I have no idea where the original definition came from but I have no doubt that the accepted definition is all that really matters here. If you'd wanted a wider discussion, maybe the thread title should have been a little more open and more about the merits of whether what TW had achieved should be considered as functionally equivalent? It wasn't. The accepted definition is all 4 Majors won in a calendar year so no, Woods hasn't achieved a Grand Slam.

LOL ... I was going to add some crack about how it's all on the same plate, but I think the toast comes on a separate plate, so perhaps the definition should be broadened to a "two-plate grand slam" Β And, in your case, it's still a grand slam, but maybe it's a "two venue slam??"

More importantly, why the hell are we talking about eating Denny's? Β Who's the idiot that brought up that grossness??? :censored:

I noticed this as well. Β The "media" is typically full of shit when it comes to politics, and Donald Trump, and Donald Sterling, and Donald Duck (huh?). Β And they're even more full of it when it comes to announcing and talking about golf; Johnny Miller, Greg Norman, Brandel Chamblee ... but somehow their definition of the mythical Grand Slam is set in stone??

Very odd.

Nope. I have no idea where the original definition came from but I have no doubt that the accepted definition is all that really matters here.

It's been mentioned in this thread a few times. Β A writer from the Atlanta Journal (O.B. Keeler) borrowed the Bridge term to label Bobby Jones' feat in 1930. Β If anybody doesn't think that Keeler would have written the same thing had Jones won the four in a row starting mid-year, I think you're crazy.

Further, another writer named George Trevor wrote: " This victory, the fourth major title in the same season and in the space of four months, had now and for all time entrenched Bobby Jones safely within the 'Impregnable Quadrilateral of Golf,' that granite fortress that he alone could take by escalade, and that others may attack in vain, forever."

If you think that he wouldn't have written something equally as hyperbolic had Jones started later, you're also crazy. Β Just imagine .. " This victory, the fourth major title in a row and in the space of nine months, had now and for all time entrenched Bobby Jones safely within the 'Impregnable Quadrilateral of Golf,' that granite fortress that he alone could take by escalade, and that others may attack in vain, forever."

Now, if you want to argue that it's less impressive over the course of two seasons because it's over a longer time frame, I might disagree, but at least you'd be basing your argument on something other than semantics.

So, it was in fact, the "media".

Another thought question:

If you're playing bridge on New Year's Eve and are crazy enough to bid 7 no trump at 11:58 and you succeed, however the hand takes 4 minutes and concludes at 12:02am on January 1st, is that still technically a Grand Slam? Β Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm??? :-P

while we are talking about "slams" how do you rate Greg Normans 1986 Saturday Slam - holding the 54 hole lead in all 4 majors after the 3rd round, and yes all in the same calendar year.

How awesome is that (note he "only" won The Open championship that year at Turnberry)

Would it still be a Saturday Slam if they were not all in the same calendar year?

Players play, tough players win!

Grand Slam is a baseball term. One swing of the bat scores 4 runs. The most possible. The most possible majors in a season is 4. The fact they're in a row is more coincidental than necessary. Grand Slam = the most possible. There's a lot of pressure as a batter when you step to the plate with the bases loaded. One can't birdie them all if they don't birdie the first.

I question if the build up to the 2000 US Open is the same as the pressure to win the Masters then the US Open then the Open then the PGA. I'm sure there was pressure, but nothing historical leading up to them like it seemed for Spieth at this year's Open. I didn't follow golf then, so please correct me regarding the hype/build up to those championships.

I don't think there was any outsized pressure on Spieth at this year's Masters and not much at this year's US Open, but there was tons of build up and tons of hype at the Open. The PGA would've been crazy had he claimed the Open title as well. Someone please inform me.

Are you in 7th grade? Your incessant whining in this thread and constant poking in other threads is reminiscent of a junior high agitator who eventually gets stuffed in a locker. You add nothing to the conversation. I challenge you to be mature and not post anything with reference to Woods for a month. I'm betting you cannot do it.
