  1. 1. How many balls do you hit, on average, at the range?

    • One small bucket or less
      7
    • One medium bucket
      10
    • One large bucket
      20
    • Two large buckets
      3
    • Three or more large buckets
      2

I usually get a large bucket.  I do several practice swings before hitting each ball.  I hit maybe 1/2 the balls with full swings.  That's about as many as I want to hit as I'm trying to maintain full focus on a priority item.  More than that and I lose focus and fear I'm just reinforcing bad swings.

The other 1/2 bucket or less are partial pitches and chips.  I'm just screwing around at the end getting rid of the balls.  More often than not, I don't finish the bucket.

So I answered, One Medium bucket.

Large bucket for a strictly range session. About 100-125 depending on the day or specials. I go through with about 5-8 balls for each iron and fairway wood. The leftovers are then used for the Driver and 3 woods off tee. Before a round, I'll split a small bucket with a buddy just to loosen up (not all the time).. couple of 7 irons to stretch it out and work up to whatever club is used on the 1st tee.

I voted wrong, because there is no category for 2-3 large buckets a day.

I usually hit 1 and a half in the morning and 1 and a half in the evening after dinner when the kids are doing their homework. Sometimes I hit more or less depending upon what I want to do. On some days I might hit all the buckets in the morning and nothing at night and other days the reverse. Large buckets are anywhere between 100 and 120 balls depending upon how they setup the machine. They've been feeling a little light lately, but I don't really count the exact number of balls.

Going to have to really focus on bettering my form before even more bad things start to happen.

I only play 2 or 3 times a week, but I'm recovering from injuries so I only played one round a week ago. Seems like ages ago. . .

Please base your vote on practice sessions (not on warming up before a round of golf).  I should have specified that in the question.

I should also explain that my practice sessions are also "workouts". Instead of spending a couple three hours in an artificially lit smelly gym, I hit balls and work the entire body in an outdoor setting with views of the mountains and such.

I try to limit a range session to medium sized bucket (80 balls).  I may go for a large bucket if I practice chipping and pitching or I'm trying to work on something specific.  I can't remember ever hitting more than a large bucket during one session or one day.

I usually purchase one large bucket which is around 80+/- balls. Of those 80, 10 are warm ups, another 50 are full swings, and the remainders are pitch shots to close targets. That's if I use the complete bucket. There have been many times I have not used the complete bucket because I was hitting the ball really well, and had nothing to work on at that session. When that happens, I take my shag stick and go work on my short game. When I go to the driving  range, I usually have something specific to work on, but  I am never in a hurry. Maybe 2 hours if that. I have been doing this long enough to know what works for me,  what doesn't, and how long to spend on it.

To answer the OP's original question, I am going to guess 50 balls on average.  Whatever's left over of the large bucket, I leave for the next guy. If I see a youngster, or a person with a child, I give them the unused portion of the bucket.

Medium buckets around here are more like 40 to 50 balls. I will only do a large if I am working on a couple of things like pitch shot and a long game drill.

Yeah, I got a large bucket (a wire basket) at a range in Dedham and got something like 50 or 60 balls. They are really stingy in your area.

I didn't vote b/c my range routine is not fixed.   I alternate between small & large buckets.   Small bucket days are for working on specific swing mechanics I want to work on.  Swing practices are slower, with a lot of mirror work type pre-routine before hitting each ball.   Large bucket days are for going through every club for all types of swings (full, 3/4, pitching, wedges to driver, shot shaping, knockdown).

I usually only hit balls before playing to warm up. Every now and then I might hit a small bucket to work on something, but that's only 5 or 6 times per year. I do putt and chip quite frequently That's free.

One large.  Any more than that and I find my form begins breaking down.  Around here a large is ~110 balls or so.  Normally by the time I get to ~70 I'm about done with whatever I was working on so I'll practice wedge shots at the target posts with the rest.

About 100 per practice session. Used to just hack 200 balls when I started to play golf but after I found this forum. 100 balls for 1 hour and a half are my average.

Who on earth is hitting 3 or more buckets at the range everytime? I usually hit a large but 70%-80% is to 125 yards or less and probably about 40% is around 50 yards, I just laugh at these maniacs who will pound out a large bucket with a driver only... they never learn a thing and probably will be sore when they wake up next morning.

I do, and I don't get sore. :-) Most of my shots are from 100 to 155 yards. A good chunk are distance controlled from 40 to 100. It just seems about right. Sometimes, I might work on one club like a 6i or 5i for half a bucket or something. On Wednesday, I worked on the 3W off the deck for a while to gain some confidence with that club and did get a little tired, but no ill effects the next day. I usually only hit 5 to 10 driver shots even out of that many balls, it's the irons from 100 to 155 yards that score for me so I spend a lot of time on them. I expect a lot of comments for it. So, comment away. . .

The more the muscles are used over time, the less sore they get.

You don't have to learn something at the range. You can have fun hitting drives. All day if it suits you. And for all you know, they could be working on ingraining a piece in the swing.

Also true. I stopped getting sore after the first week doing this, and I do spend all the time I need to setup every shot.

Today was the first day in  quite a while they let us hit off real grass. Worked on my left handed long game  with a $3 large bucket (80+/- balls) for the most part. Plus we had a nice cool breeze blowing which was different.

    • Is it? I bought the Stack radar to replace my PRGR based on what Stack told me! When I am swinging for speed, the PRGR would miss 50%-80% of my backswings due to a higher speed. The stack seldom misses those- at least for me.
    • As an analyst by nature, I would like to compare the scores under both systems. It is something we can easily do if we have the data. I actually thought the new system was less fair to those whose game was on the decline - like mine! Old: Best 10 of last 20 scores with the .96 multiplier. Course handicap excluded course rating and overall par. New: Best 8/20. Course handicap includes course rating -par. My understanding is Stableford caps scores at Net double bogey like stroke play. If so, handicap should be slower to rise because you are only using 8 versus 10 scores. If I am missing something, I am curious enough to  want to understand what that may be. My home course tees that I play are 72.1/154 now. My best score out here is 82. When my game started to decline, my handicap didn’t budge for 13 rounds because of good scores in my first 8! I know I am an anomaly but my handicap has increased almost 80% in the past few years (with only a few rounds this year). For a few months I knew I was losing every bet because my game was nowhere near my handicap. I suspect I have steamrolled a few nuances but that shouldn’t matter much. When I have modeled this with someone playing the same tees and course, one good round, or return to form, will immediately reduce the handicap by some amount.
