So my final round of 2020 was definitely a solid finish to my golfing year.

Congrats on the solid finish....was hoping to get at least 9holes in before 2020 closes out.....At home work, threat of rain all seem to point that next round will be in the new year.

Shot 81 in the first round of 2021. Played really well considering the conditions. Wet, raining, windy and muddy. Felt like the ball had no pop off the clubface, no roll in the squishy fairways, and greens were soaked.

Had 14 GIR/nGIR, 29 putts, and another round with ZERO penalty strokes. Also knocked out 3 birdies for the 2021 challenge.

Last couple scores started with an 87, then 82, 79, and yesterday, a 75. At least I'm heading the right way.

First golfing day of 2021 yesterday! Not spectacular, but a solid start. I teed off about mid-morning and shot 44 on the front, then 47 on the back with my only bad hole, a triple bogey seven on the seventeenth (should’ve been no worse than a bogey). I tried to get cute with a pitch and dumped it in a bunker, then took four from there. So that’s a total of 91.

Then I took about a half hour break, and then I played another nine holes, but I played the reds to switch things up. This time I shot 42 with two disappointing doubles (one on a wide-open 300-yard hole, one after a four putt), two bogeys and five pars.

So overall, not a bad day of golf, but there was one irritating thing. On about half a dozen occasions, I had a putt either lip out or hang on the lip. It wasn’t disappointing, because that tells me I was hitting good putts (I had 57 total for 27 holes), but it was irritating. I hit the ball pretty well though, which I’m happy about. I’ve been hitting it well recently, but I’m not scoring as well as I could be, maybe because of my sour putting. My handicap has also gone up (17.9 as of today), so I’d like to get it back down below 17 or even below 16 before season starts in March.

An 84 yesterday from the back tees, 77 today from the normal tees. The big problem today was that 100 yard shot to the pin, and end up taking a double bogey. Better course management next time.

First round of 2021 today with a 102 (52 on the front, 50 on the back).  Today was let's not make par or better day.  All 18 holes were either bogey or double, BUT and this is a great one, NO TRIPLES or WORSE, No Lost Balls, No Out of Bounds, No Penalty shots of any kind.  This was the most consistent round in terms of no blow up holes.  Putting was 'meh with 42 strokes.  Had a number of lip outs and a couple that stopped literally an inch in front of the center of the cup.  Big lesson today - what club I normally play in the summer at a given distance, go up one!  I was consistently a club short and only realized too late that I needed to club up and let the ego go.   Course fairways were decent as we had rain last night and about half the holes were cart path only.  Knowing where the wet places lived paid off as I was able to get shots to land in the dry zone most of the day.   Greens were smooth and fast so it was a pleasure to attempt putts.  All in all a great day even it was in the 40's with a NW wind 5-10mph.

Was above 40 degrees in Chicago today, so I made it out for 9 holes.  Not sure what I shot becasue i didnt keep score. After a GIR on the first hole, it became clear it wasn't score keeping conditions. Still had a blast getting out and playing!

Played my 8th round of the year today.  It was 38 degrees when we teed off. Played course  #8, White Tees at 6300 yards.  Cart path only, wet fairways, occasional mud ball. So so front, 5 pars, 4 bogeys. Started with a par on 10 then a bogey on the 550 yard par 5.  On the remaining holes I shot even with the help of an eagle on the last par 5. Driver, 3 wood to 3 feet!  Verified that eagle on the par 4 18th playing at 417 yards (#2 ranked hole) with Driver, 5 wood and two putts!  Last 4 rounds coincidentally were all 77’s.  Go figure?

Once again, as mentioned on the “How many rounds have you played 2020 thread,” I hate you 😉

My bro and I played our usual Wednesday afternoon nine today. I started double-double-bogey and my swing felt totally out-of-sync (topped back-to-back shots on the second hole and another on the third), but I played the last six in +2, including four pars in a row on holes 5-8. That gives me 43 total with only 15 putts, which I’m pretty darn happy with after the shaky start.

My brother shot a shaky 62 for the nine, but three of his holes (a 10 on the second, an 11 on the fifth and a 7 on the seventh) accounted for seventeen of his twenty six strokes over par. In a match, his 62 would’ve been 54 since we play a maximum triple bogey.

Here’s one hole I was thrilled with: I came within an inch of recording my first birdie of 2021 on the short sixth. I bombed a drive that easily cleared the fairway bunker (probably a 210 carry), then I hit a low wedge shot from about 60 yards that apparently landed pin-high, bounced once and stopped dead about six feet out. Lipped that out.

I told one of my teammates all I had to do to get going was get my putter going just a bit, and it seems as though I accomplished that today!

10th round of the year today.  Frost delay but we eventually got out!  Great round, a one over 73!  37/36.  2 bogeys and one birdie on the front. Back nine was solid 7 of 7 fairways, 8 GIRs. Missed the 18th green for my only miss.  Chipped to two inches. Even par on the back. Overall, 11 fairways, 14 Greens in Regulation!  32 putts. (Played Pinehurst #6, White Tees)

73 (+2) today in breezy and cool conditions.  Had a few bad swings but overall pretty happy with how I played.  Hit 14 greens...made a couple birdies but left a couple out there.

Encouraged that the SuperSpeed work I've done has been positive.  Can tell the swing faster but I don't feel out of control.  Only a couple bad drives but neither cost me very much...

I’ve played 36 in the last two days, so I’ll do a quick summary of each round:

YESTERDAY: We played Occoneechee (par 71, 5951 yds), and I stunk up the front with 54, averaged a triple bogey on holes 3-7 (two doubles, a triple, two quads), but I rebounded with a 44 on the back for a 98 total, including my first birdie of 2021 on the par-3 10th. Putting was mediocre at best (39).

TODAY: Back to the home course. A bit better than yesterday, but not by much. 44 on the front, 50 on the back for a 94 total. I was actually only +12 through 13, but I botched holes 14-16 and bogeyed the last two holes. Putting was definitely better (34) with only one three putt from about 20 feet.

Good news: My bro and I went to Play It Again Sports this weekend, and I found a nice driving iron that only cost me $10. I hit it several times in these two rounds, and I’m actually hitting it pretty well. On solid strikes, I can hit it just about as far as my driver, so I have a good feeling it’s going to be a useful club in my bag when my driver goes haywire.

Bad news: My handicap has unfortunately taken a turn for the worse. It is now sitting at 18 even. The last time I broke 90 was November 28, so I’ve gotta get back into the swing of things. Our season starts March 1!!

Last few rounds. Took a quick trip to Phoenix/Scottsdale to get fit for the new G425 woods, played TPC Scottsdale, was in great shape.

2nd round of the year - again at the "home" course.  Wound up shooting 95 which for me was good, especially after a really rocky start with a "9" on #2 par 5.  That was the worst hole of the day as I was no worse than double on the remaining holes.  Missed birdie on 18 by 1" (the ball literally stopped just at the edge of the cup.....ugggh!)  Had a total of 5 pars and 5 bogies.  I thought I was in for a long, long day despite having the son and 4yr old grandson as playing partners.  Closed out the front 9 with a 49 and the back with a 45.  It was gusting 10-20 and the course was soft in all the wrong places.  Putting was pretty good with a 38 over 18 holes.  Also hit 10 of 14 fairways, though the drives were averaging about 15 - 20 yards shorter.  Overall accuracy was good across the board on all clubs....maybe I will try it again tomorrow, similar weather similar temps.

    • You can pre-order an R50 here for pretty rapid shipping (these are back-ordered almost everywhere): https://www.playbetter.com/products/garmin-approach-r50-golf-launch-monitor-simulator?ghref=2301%3A700794. This is an affiliate purchase, and I'm willing to kick back lifetime ad-free Supporter membership here on TST or a 90-minute GEARS session for the cost of a regular member lesson (about 1/3 the cost). Also, I'll record a video myself soon when I get an R50.
    • Day 58 - 2024-11-27 Some quick 90-yard shots on a particular hole… before a lesson and testing out multiple Foresight Launch Monitors on GSPro.
    • Day 209 (27 Nov 24) - Easy session with the LW - short pitches replicating greens side up and downs. Finished up with the 7i and hard foam balls - making 1/2 to 3/4 swings with deliberately slowed tempo…from varied lies.
    • Yes, this is the 2024 model. DSG ruined what Callaway perfected for most golfers. A darn good 3 piece golf ball. Now it's a 2 piece cheap ball. To me a 2 piece ball is fine and a 3 piece budget ball is better. I prefer a slightly harder ball, something in the 65-75 compression range that will perform similar to the old Gamer. The Titleist tru-feel is pretty good. I planned on giving Maxfli straightfli a try.
