I think I posted that I broke 90 for two rounds back in July with an 89 and then the next week with an 88. Since then it's been back in the low 90s and playing a couple rounds where I hit 1 fairway. lmao. I figured out that I get "headworms" in the tee box. I line up my shot, and think "Okay, let's put this one down the middle," and then think about the dreaded left or block right... and where does the ball go? You guessed it. So I played a head game. "Whatever you do, DON'T hit it in the fairway." And I put 78% of my driver tee shots in the fairway. Negative thoughts have more power than positive thoughts.

My left knee and back haven't been the greatest this year. I can't take NSAIDs. My doc just gave me a Rx for vicodin. I take two tylenol before the round and 1/2 vicodin tablet on the 9th tee. This got me thru the back 9 w/o pain. I told him I play about 30 rds/yr so 15 tabs should do it for a season.

I'd been having a bear of a time with the 11th hole, but not on Friday. I hit driver dead down the middle. My PW was left of the green. I hit a bump and run with a hybrid onto the green and sank the 6' putt for par. I'm so glad I bought that 26 degree hybrid. I bought it specifically for chipping and it's taken the place of my 6i. It's a great club and I've used it more than any club in my bag all season save my putter. I had a rough time on the 12th because I hit my tee shot with the 5W a little too far right - driver is a no go on this hole because I'll overshoot the dogleg - too far to the right left me a 200 yd shot into the green. I tried it with the 22 degree and didn't hit it well and ended up about 25 yds short of the green. I used the 26 and ran it up onto the green to 10 feet from the flag. Two putted for bogey.

On the 13th I found out that not fully committing to a shot can turn two good shots into a double bogey with a shank. In all fairness I'd not practiced this type of shot. Flighting down a wedge off hardpan under a branch over a bunker. The branch and bunker caused headworms and a disaster. The 17th was a little interesting. I caught my tee shot a little heavy and it landed a little short of the green right behind a tree. It appeared like I was blocked. I initially thought, chip out then chip on. Then I saw that if I hit the shot right, I actually could get a flop shot onto the green. It would leave a long putt, but if I hit the shot right I could do it. I went back to the cart, put away my 50 and got the 58. I popped it up, and it landed right where I wanted. I nearly saved par with the 40' putt, and tapped in for bogey.

As you can see below, I ended up with a 90 for the round. I was in a good space afterward. Sure I hit some crap shots and there was a lot of room for improvement, but a lot of things went right, and at my level we have to take the bad with the good. Hitting 67% fairways overall for the round for someone at my level is pretty good especially considering I used driver most of the time.

Playing the best golf of my life the past week and a half.  Shot 73-70 and won our Senior club championship last week.  After going almost two full years without breaking par, I shot the 2 under 70 last Sunday.  Yesterday I was +2 after 3 and kept my head down and grinded back and finished with a 69 -for the first time in my life in the 60's!  Would have loved to have saved that for next weekend and the club championship, but I have nothing but positivity flowing , so you never know.  If it goes well next week, you will all know about it!

Well…I choked the 2nd round of the club championship a few weeks ago,  72-84.  But yesterday I went out and made bogey on #1 and then made 6 birdies and shot 67.  This game is nuts.  New Personal best!

Yesterday was a 51 (9-holes as if I need to mention that).  Better than last week's disaster but not as good as 2 weeks ago.  Putting was "OK" but not great.  All 2 putts, no 1 putts but also no 3 putts so can't complain too much.  Driving was OK with 4 of 7 fairways hit and only one real bad tee shot.  Two lost balls, both should not have happened, one off the tee straight into waste area 20 years ahead of tee and an "Easy" 110 yard approach shot that only went 50 yards and into waste area.

Last Friday was able to get out and play a round after doing some day 1 drills from the 30 days of practice. As long as I focused on the correct take away I hit some surprisingly decent shots. Ended up with a 93 (par 72) with a 9 on the second hole par 3 because I hit 2 in the water before I moved up and dropped. No idea why I did that, but basically threw away 2 strokes for no reason. I saved a lot of pars and bogeys with 5 one puts and no 3 putts for the day. Just too many penalty strokes. On a day where I had one bird, six pars, and six bogey's the score had great possibilites that 6 penalty strokes quickly squashed. All that aside, given it's only my second full 18 played, and 45 total holes played I can't complain about how I've played all that loud. Pretty interested to see how much improvement continuing the 30 days practice drills gives me. **actual penalty strokes are wrong on several, I was doing 2 strokes for water drop instead of 1 so it's 6 penalty instead of 10 showing on the card**

Ugh.

52 69.6/127

Two pars, 5 doubles, a triple and a quad. 22 putts. Can't seem to put together a decent round on my new 'home' course. Thinking it is time for a lesson.

Played the Emerald today from the blues (just over 6150yds 70.1/127) with a good friend from Tenn.  A solid round for me with an 88 (42 front / 46 back).  Only one penalty with a water ball on the approach on 18.  Hit 8 of 14 fairways, 3 GIR and 5 nGIR.  Had 4 pars and a birdie against 8 bogies and 4 doubles.  Total of 31 putts (a number of those long lag putts on the greens which are pretty big).  My partner had a 93.  His was a feast or famine round. Tomorrow we join up with my son to play Minnesott, a course with smaller elevated greens and firm fairways.

105.

But I did birdie a 188 par 3. It's my first bird since I took up the game again 4 months ago.

I was horrible off the tee. So I switched to 3 wood on the 10th and promptly hit two OB. Ugh. Went back to driver and for whatever reason I managed to keep it in play after that.

It was all getting steadily better, but the Golf Gods must have decided that I was their favorite comedy act over the past two weeks.

85 today, 47 on the front, 38 on the back. Physically this round was just a slog. It is unusually humid/muggy in the Bay Area this weekend, and I was tired from a funeral/wake/memorial yesterday, so I'm surprised I managed to score as well as I did on the back 9. Forgettable except for a tap in birdie on a long par-3 #11.

Went out to the course closest to my house today. Shot 100, had a good chance to break 100 by hitting a birdie putt on 18. It's funny because I wasn't even paying attention to the score, I had already resolved early that it was going to be a rough round, but I was going to push through and still keep score. It's a longer course than I usually play, lost a couple strokes just on fatigue alone I think. I actually putted ok today, only putt I left woefully short was one where my body just quit mid stroke.

Solid front 9 of 42, even with a triple on the 9th. Then the hangover kicked in and I finished with a scratchy, ugly 94. Still, another handicap cut to 18.5 🙂

Shot 70 (-2) yesterday. Hit the tee ball extremely well. Hit my wedges like absolute GARBAGE!!! Missed 4 greens from inside 100 yards. I got real steep for some reason, need to get to the range and hit some balls.

The armlock putter is really getting comfortable and I putted very well. I was 17 for 17 from inside 12 feet which is exactly why I went to armlock. Also had no 3 putts.

79 for an 8.6 differential. At the start I felt a bit out of sorts for no particular reason.  Scored okay on the first nine but had very few solid shots. After completely butchering the 10th and 11th I tried to go back to basics and struck the ball much better.

Our Tournament of Champions is Thursday so I feel positive heading into our last event of the year.

Had an "OK", shot 48 (par 35).  Driving was good with 4 of 6 FW Hit and SG vs Scratch off the tee was -1.64 which is not bad for me and overall averaged @ 221yds with the driver with longest @ 239 and shortest @ 209.  No 3-Putts, but also no 1-Putts.  Main issue is my approach shots.  SG vs Scratch on Approach Shots was a -12.54.  Sad thing is that -12.54 for that round is better than my -14.48 SG Approach for all rounds this year.  Clearly I need to work on Approach Shots.  Proximity was also bad with the best being in the 15-30' range.  The proximity explains the lack of 1-Putts.  I did have a couple that were close to dropping but we are not playing Horseshoes so "Close" does not count.

45 today on 9 at Marion Golf Club in Marion MA

image.png.3700c2d1857833540153320e7edd347c.png

This one really stung, even though my last 3 rounds here have been 45.

First hole should've been a 5 at worst but putting really let me down today. 3 Putted on #3 after sticking it to 8 feet, missed putts on almost every hole and blew up on #8 after keeping every other hole within reason that round. #4 and #6 I had to deal with maintenance crew in the fairway working on a wetspot and they didn't move and just waved me on to hit, so of course I wound up pulling both drives to just not hit them, hate when I can't focus on a shot due to external circumstances. Really should've shot a 42 or better today, just super disappointing.

Did it today!

image.thumb.png.86910026e36b081d6470ae38a5f36b70.png

Missing the birdie on #1 hurt because I drove it to the fringe and 3 putted there...

First 2 holes today were some of the best golf I've played. Trying to read and put "Golf is not a Game of Perfect" mentality into my approach, but it's pretty hard. Hit the green on #3 and then 3 putted which got me off my game and lead to the next 2 holes being a clown fest. OB on the next drive and then on #5 I sky balled my drive, hit an incredible 210yd 3 hybrid to the a few feet from the green and then chipped it to like 8ft and 3 putted! So annoying, I really need to improve my putting...

Other than that I was very happy with the 4 on #6 which is the #1 hcp hole here. Hit a solid 260 yard drive, then a real good 6 iron the remaining 175 to just on the fringe, 1 chip and 1 putt and sweet victory.

Feel like I can break 40 on this course if I could just combine my putting and my good shots together on a few more holes, or at least have my putting bail me out 1-2x a round...

Shot an 83 (40/43)  at Minnesott today with my son.  We played from the gold tees (5400 yds, slope 66.1/112).  Started off par, par, then went dbl, dbl, then went par on the balance of the front nine for a four over 40.  It is the first time I have ever had a string of five pars in a row.  Make the turn and I start with a par on 10, bogie on 11 and birdie on 12, even through the first three of the back nine.  After making par on 13, I went bogie on 14, triple on 15.  The triple really hurt, but it was all me as I hit not one but two very poor wedge shots.  Heading into 16 the last par 5 of the day, I hit a good tee shot.  Still just over 200 yds out, I opted to play the 3w.  Finished just right of the green pin high and with a good pitch with the 58 I two putted for par.  Nice to recover after a bad hole.  17 was another dbl bogie after I skulled the 54 to the right of the green.  The final hole of the day was bogie to finish the back seven over at 43.  Takeaways from the day:  9 of 14 fairways hit,  9 GIR (a new personal best), total of 36 putts (could have easily been 30 or fewer with the number of near misses), the string of six straight pars (holes 5 thru 10) were a new personal best for a round total of 10 pars (also a new personal best).  My son, not to be outdone by the old man, shot an 81.   Good day of golf.

    • the rules have changed, but this would fall under 11.2 in the current rules.  General Penalty to any player who deliberately deflects a ball in motion, and you must replay the putt.
    • Day 250 4-29 Getting chest through with speed on downswing and wrist arch. Also worked on some moving the pelvis slightly away in the backswing. Feel like im going too fast and long, looks like it on the recordings too.
    • Interesting that it's no penalty, but then again, I can't imagine someone would purposefully put their foot out there in this situation or one like it.  And then there was the time someone purposefully deflected his own ball during a major, but that's very different too. The only time I can recall a ball I hit hitting another player or their equipment was ages ago -- over a decade and a half ago.  I had a 3' putt for an 89 and someone (a random pairing, not someone I knew) decided it was a good time for goaltending practice.  That wouldn't fall under this rule, though (and it wasn't in a tournament anyway). Thanks for continuing to share these, Dave!  I always find these interesting.
    • Day 51 (29 Apr 26) - Worked with a few of the golf team kids plus my grandson (he’s too young for the team as it’s middle-high school age and he’ll be 10 Sat).  He put on a small hitting clinic (hitting off the same tees as the rest of the boys) - one of the older kids called him a “coach”.  Worked in a few shots for myself - had the light bag: driver, 7w, 4 - 6 - 8 - Pw - Sw (DCI 962’s except the Sw a 981) and Zebra putter….got in some great tee shots, a couple of recovery and an awesome up and down for bogie: 55 yds out, hitting 4th shot due to 2nd getting tangled in limbs - see the window I need to hit for a tight spinner with the Sw - nail it to a postage letter distance from the cup for a tap in bogie….my kind of practice.
    • Day 21, April 29.  Before going to work this morning, I worked in my indoor practice room for 20 minutes.   This was entirely 6-iron shots with the usual step.  Video yesterday showed me that I'm still straightening my trail leg too much (leading to the backswing length issue I've been working to fix), so I focused on not doing that in my rehearsal swings.
