What'd You Shoot Today?

Very short #8 on a Par 3 Course. 105~108 yards. Somewhere around there. Flag on the bag tier and tucked into a corner, can't see the hole. Forgot the score, something like +12.

Hit the tee shot straight into a tree and it bounced back about 20 yards away. Call mulligan. Hit the second one the exact same way into better lie. Take the first lie just for the challenge. Pull the 56 wedge, low descending shot into the muddy rough up through two redwood trees with low limbs and straight onto the green, about 25~30 feet from the hole. Snuck the ball on the left corner of the cup. Awesome up and down.

83 (43+40) on an easy par-70.

9 pars.  (this is very good for me)

5 bogeys.

4 doubles.

35 putts -- about my average. I need to improve here -- had three 3-putts but one was from over 60', so I'm not too worried about that...

1 penalty, 6 fairways, 10 GIR.

...I still find it strange that just a few weeks ago I was shooting over 100 out in CA... (New and more challenging courses, admittedly, but I wouldn't expect a 20-stroke difference...)

Well...I couldn't have played much worse than I did today. 98(+26). Absolutely horrible round at a course I usually play pretty well at. Didn't hit a fairway yesterday, shot a +15, 87. Hit just two today and shot a 98. Two fairways hit in my last 36 holes. I guess you can't expect to score when you can't hit fairways.

Career Bests:

9 Holes--37 @ The Fairways at Arrowhead-Front(+2)

18 Holes--80 @ Carroll Meadows Golf Course(+9)

Home Course:

1) The Fairways at Arrowhead

2) Mayfair Country Club

Stats: 6835 yards 71.9/127

Shot 87.......45/42 4/14 FW and 3 GIR. 30 putts. 2 birdies, 4 pars, 9 bogies, 1 doubles, and 2 triples.

I've been working only on my wedge game and putting for the last two weeks and it is paying off. No 3 putts and I chipped in one birdie with a bump and run 8i and made a long range birdie putt. All the practice around the green is taking a toll on my iron play though. I'm staying the course though. I think once I have a handle on the short game hopefully I can keep a handle on it and then go back and work on the full swing again in mid-august or so.

Last night i played at my local course and shot a +1 on the front 9 (only played 9 holes as it was in the evening). Just played the best i've ever played... everything came together, totally relaxed and creamed everything. Just gotta do it conistently in a counting game and drop that handicap right down!

My score (9 holes):

Hole    Par    Score

1       5        4

2       4        5

3       4        4

6       3        3

7       5        5

8       5        6

Really working on my wedges and putting lately and it all just came together.

Picked up a golf club for the first time ever near the end of May this year and have been playing all par 3 courses ever since to work on my game before going to a "real" course.  Played a nine hole all par 3 course yesterday and shot a 42.  Which isn't as bad as it sounds (okay, yes it is :) considering I had a 7 on the first hole (shanked tee shot into woods and had an awful time getting out).

The rest of the round was uneventful - shooting bogey or double bogey for the remaining holes.  I'm really awful at golf but I enjoy just getting outside (even in this ungodly heat).

Once, I can consistently play in the mid-thirties on the par 3 courses I'll move on to the "real" courses.

I played nine after work last night, but it's obvious I should have never gone to the course.  I started off well with very nice sandies on 1 and 2.  Should have had another on 3, but I three putted.  By the fourth green I had hit the wall - so exhausted I could barely swing a club.  I struggled in with a 48, went home and collapsed.  Then I overslept this morning.  Not sure what the deal was, but exhaustion and maybe a little dehydration.

Ugh!!! Another very frustrating round. Shot a 91(+21). Still having trouble off the tee. Hit just 3 fairways today. One with my 7 iron, one with my driver, and one with my 3 wood. That gives me 5 fairways hit in my last 3 rounds. A week ago the way I was swinging it I could've doubled that in one round.

9 Holes--37 @ The Fairways at Arrowhead-Front(+2)

18 Holes--80 @ Carroll Meadows Golf Course(+9)

Monday score*

Had a lesson at 10am with one of the Canadian Tour pros at my local course, I've been having some impact troubles lately and I've never had a lesson so I figured it was the best time to get one. My confidence was down so I needed something positive and it was a great time to make changes. I got with him and he did the normal, hit a few I won't say anything and when he did he surprised me. We only changed where I positioned the ball in my stance, and my front shoulder position. I started hitting the ball 100X better. Had a t time for 1148, so off we went.

Played really well for how I've been lately and shot a 91 (+20, Par 71 at HC) I had 1 Birdie, 5 pars, 7 bogeys, 3 doubles, and 2 quads. What really frustrated me was that I was hitting the ball well, and I let a few mental errors blow me up for 5 holes in the middle of the round. As I was finishing by buddy called and asked if I wanted to play a twilight, same course. Feeling a bit tired I agreed anyway.

Played another 18 and shot +9 on the front (had 1 triple in there that was just a stupid move. Literally putted off the green into a hazard...first time for everything). I had my first eagle putt on a par 5 too! Then shot a +5 on the back, with a double on 18. Tied my best round this year with an 85 (par 71), the lesson made a huge difference and I'm off again tonight to try and see if I can recreate it!

85 (+13) Ballstriking is really, really good these days, especially the irons. Lose some woods here and there, but it's mostly good. I was accompanied by 2-3 gadflies on 14 out of 18 holes, it was a real nightmare. They kept buzzing around and sitting on me all the time. I barely had time to flail my arms to get them away for a second or two to hit my shots.

    • Best drive I've ever hit: I will not be answering any questions about the rest of the hole. Or the round, for that matter.
    • I tried hybrids way back when TaylorMade introduced the copper orange Firesole Rescue, the clubhead having been made of titanium which was still relatively new even in drivers back then. I couldn't hit it well at all, and while the success of hybrids suggests that the modern ones must be quite good,  I'm perfectly happy with the 5, 7, and 9-woods.  Early ones of mine were Top Flite Intimidator 400s made by Spalding... and also made of titanium, now that I think of it.  I still have them in my basement. I do bag a driving iron, but it's a one-trick-pony that never sees fairway use.
    • The last time I played Maxfli balls, Dunlop was still making them. How long ago was that? Mostly, though, I used to play Top Flites (original 336 dimple model) when Spalding was still making them. Now I play the Pro V1x. Last time that I ordered some, Titleist was still making them. Let's see how long that lasts.
    • Once, on a course in Middleton, Massachusetts that I used to love but has since closed down,  I hit the wrong half of a huge, UK style double green.  Then I made the hundred foot putt.  Tough to  forget that one.
