The times they are a changin'...

By Frank Pallotta

Soon "I read it for the articles" will be more believable.

The iconic men's magazine Playboy said Monday that it is planning to drop fully nude female photography from its pages.

The news, first reported by The New York Times, is bound to send shock waves through the magazine industry, since Playboy has been a part of American popular culture since its debut in 1953.
The magazine's redesign, which will reportedly take place next March, appears to be a reaction to the ever-growing accessibility of online pornography.

This makes sense;  not showing any music worked for MTV.

So ... basically its a slightly more refined Maxim. Probably ought to just pull the plug and let it die with some dignity.

I subscribed for about 8 or 10 years but got tired of the homogeneous blonde haired (real or bottled) fake boobed, girl of Hugh's likings airbrushed until they all looked pretty much the same and not so real.

They've always been smart and have constantly changed in subtle ways through the years to match cultural trends. I'm guessing they've seen (or think) what used to be their core readership migrate to magazines like Maxim, so they are just moving over to try to recapture that segment. And obviously nobody is going to buy a magazine for graphic content they can get more easily online. I hope they survive. They had a legitimate cultural voice in the 60s-80s era but have sort of lost that in the last 20 years. It would be great to see Playboy taken seriously again.

The Dutch version of Playboy will not turn into the same direction they announced. Good for them :-)

Anytime in the last half dozen years I've heard or read a story about a magazine - any magazine - doing anything, my reaction is always the same ... "They still print that?!?!?!?!"

It's about time, I thought people only bought Playboy for the articles anyway.  This is a last ditch effort to keep from killing the magazine that started it all for Hef.
