So... maybe print magazines are still relevant? Rimshot. Seriously, 40 Vicodin a day? :doh:Do not go away from this piece w/o reading the what got you sober question. Didn't know that about Tom Watson.

Quote

"I've never been sure about the whole drug-testing aspect of the Olympics," says David Feherty, 57, a former European Tour player from Northern Ireland whose training regimen once included weed, cocaine and a daily dose of 40 Vicodin and two and a half bottles of whiskey. "If they come up with a drug that helps you play golf better, I am going to be so pissed – I looked for that for years."

Haven't read the whole thing yet, but how he did not  sustain at least some sort of brain damage if not get killed ODing is amazing..

Even more amazing is somebody can turn it around from that level of abuse.

Good for him, like his commentary or not (I usually like), he seems to be a decent person.

EDIT: Just read it. I like Tom Watson now..

Enjoyed the interview. I saw Feherty open up Royal Oaks CC in Dallas after it was remodeled. It was he, Justin Leonard, and Leonard's former roommate (nice guy) a Touring Pro whose names escapes me -- big hitter, like the Llama.  They had Feherty miked up for 9 holes - playing - and he played well, and was hilarious at the same time. He was still in his addictive state ... Laughed at this quote and his wife's quote:

I'd been sober about nine months when I got run over by a trailer on my way home. Well, I got hit by the pickup truck that was towing the trailer first. I remember flying through the air and thinking to myself, "If this is a f**king beer truck, I will actually die from irony."

About Tom Watson, Feherty, even TIger, and people who grow up. People make mistakes in their life, some actually learn from their mistakes. Some don't. We tend to judge people by who they were, not who they are. Look at the tire irons we still take to Tiger. Take a look at yourself -- are you the same person you were 5 years ago, a year ago? Do you look at the world through a different lense now? If we learn to appreciate people for who they are and not who they were ... we'd be in a better place (end of mini-rant).

40 Vicodin? Two and a half bottles of whiskey? I'm sorry, but that sounds like hyperbole. I have no doubt he abused both, but I have a hard time believing it was to that extent.

Yeah, totally. I've seen it before, this kind of bravado where people almost go with a "the fish was THIS BIG!!!" mentality when recounting stupid behavior.

I'd imagine he did sustain brain damage. You can't do that to your body and mind. Even if it is exaggerated, which it probably has to be.

I agree but he may not be far off if consider the potency of the dosage. I had a tooth pulled in my twenties. They gave me 30 vicodin. I started developing tolerance the third day. I hated how they made me feel goofy and I flushed the last ten or so pills. I have a few times consumed an entire 750 milliliter bottle of scotch and could have drank more. I always have been able to metabolize alcohol quickly and as a 140 lb high schooler could drink the 250 lb linemen under the table. Alcoholism runs on both sides of family so probably genetic. Not something I am proud of, just saying some people can handle a lot. You add cocaine to the mix and now talking about 24 and 48 hour bingers with amphetimines that counteract rhe downers of pills and alcohol (at what I am sure is quite a tax on the health) so although I agree it is probably exaggerated, and lets face it, he has a bit of the irish gab and story telling about him. He may have gotten close a few times.

He is full of shit. Frankly surprised a recovering addict would speak about it that way. Almost glorifies it.

I think he's played up his "previous ways" in several formats and on several occasions. You're right: it glorifies it more than it makes it sound bad.

And I think he does that because I assume he feels as if he needs to be amusing for the audience. Isn't that Feherty acting as "Feherty"?

A man who can't leave his persona behind. Where or who is David?

I agree with you. He could have been amusing then serious and revealed more. But is that Feherty?

What I find very strangle is I have good info he can be sincere about it. He was here speaking at a recovery/detox center  where my step-dad is on the board. My folks are hardcore AA Al Anon members.

Despite loving golf my mom didn't know who he is and came back from his guest speaker engagement impressed, she actually called me on her way home to ask if I knew who he was. She had nothing but good things to say.

DF needs a filter. His need to always crack a joke or sound witty is tiresome. He knows what he said is BS he just can't resist. It's like sobriety hasn't taught him much. He is still excessive.

Feherty can be more extreme than Bill Murray. Remember when he got suspended for his "assassination" quote? He deserved that punishment!
