Golf is too hard. Had a nasty slice, then quit golf for 8 months after I met my wife. Came back to golf only to trade in my slice for a hook. Two years later Ive cured the hook for the most part and my score went from low 100s to mid 90s. Now cant hit a wedge, pull most of my putts or blow them ten feet past. I work 50 hours a week, and have a 3 year old at home so Ive got time to practice or play not both. Practice has never proved beneficial to my game anyways so I prefer to play. Dont wanna join the tour. Want to play well enough to have fun. Shooting 105, 106, and 100 is not my idea of fun. Golf used to be my escape. Now it just pisses me off. My anger levels have gotten so bad theyre putting a strain on my marriage. Anybody got any ideas for a new hobby? And pls dont say bowling, hunting, or fishing.

What's wrong with bowling? It's one of the least frustrating sports there is.

Edit: Also just start a MySwing thread already. It's a whole lot easier to improve if you have a real picture of what you need to do.

I find wood working to be relaxing. Nothing too fancy. I grab old pallets for free and make rustic bird houses from them. I have a friend with a table at a flea market, he takes some and sells them for me so I even make a few bucks. Its my winter time, no golf, get off the couch fix.

You have find your own thing that brings you inner peace.

You know, I just learned that they are experimenting with different scoring.  I was watching this weekend and they said (but didn't elaborate why) that the new scoring was an attempt to court the olympics.  It's the same 300 maximum but each frame is scored independently, and thus no balls rely on balls from following frames to score.  30 points for a strike, 10 + pincount of first ball for a spare, and just total pins for an open.

I don't know by how much, but if this caught on, everybody's averages would certainly go up a good chunk, so maybe that would ease your frustration? :-P

I was going to say, nothing quite as frustrating as throwing what looks to be a perfect ball only to see a pin standing, or even a split.... I've had many perfect games sullied by very small differences in pin/ball deflection.

Idk, just never bothered me. Not a lot of choices to make and not a lot that can go wrong. Most frustrating game IMO is tennis, so many variables, close calls, etc.

Ugh, that sounds like a terrible idea. Scores are so close at the pro level why would they want a scoring system that makes the margins smaller? It'll just make it more likely a lesser player can take the title.

Obviously you are taking your golf game way too serously. Golf is a game that no matter your ability, you "MUST" have fun with it, while remembering that suicide is not an option. Forget your score. Forget trying to swing for distance. Forget those golfers with better games. Just have fun with what you got. Most likely you are never the worst golfer on the course.

As for doing something else as a hobby, try some different things. Myself, my main hobby is staying busy. I do volunteer work in national parks. I hike. I do the photography thing. I RV full time. I read books. I build things. I catch and release fish. I drink beer. Iread books. I eat too much. I smoke a pipe. Sometimes a cigar. Most of all, although not really a hobby, I love all my family members. All of these things have their own priorities for me. Family is #1. Always will be.

My guess is you need put some things in your life into their proper perspectives. Keep your fondness for golf but give it a lower priority. Life is way to short to let unimportant things bother you. I speak from experience on that subject.

I used to get so frustrated with my game until I learned to just enjoy playing golf. It's a game. Enjoy yourself and the company of your fellow players.

Stick with golf, just don't get mad. Expect the worst and celebrate the best. Remember that "It's better to be lucky than good". Who wants to hit fairway/green/fairway/green/fairway/green. . .you get the idea. That's totally boring, who wants to play like that? :ninja:

Keep on playing. Just have more fun and laugh every time you hit a tree repeatedly when there's like a 2% chance of hitting it.

Not sure why at the end you throw out all the obvious choices...

But I'd say if 100 just pisses you off maybe you do take it too seriously. If you golfed 90 are you happy? I mean think how many people golf 80's....

Too answer you seriously, I'd start working out, swimming or exercising to relieve that stress....

Take your 3-year old to a practice putting green. Give him/her a tiny club, or even just a few balls to roll to the hole, or anywhere. Play with her for 20 minutes, or until she gets bored. Watch the real joy of golf.

Then, every time you take a swing that pisses you off, just picture your kid laughing, and remember it's just a silly game.

    • Day 11: Worked on putting with the metronome
    • I added to total today by hopping it in on the first hole for an eagle. A short par 4, I hit 4 wood to 110. With a little breeze in my face I hit a 50 degree gap wedge to 2 feet and watched it hop into the hole for an eagle 2!
    • Sounds good. Text me if you have any questions. You have a good setup, too, and so long as you can get good camera angles… you should be good. https://skillest.com/@iacas
    • Day 14 (September 18).  Morning practice, despite questionable weather (it's raining).   Worked on chipping at first, including run-ups with UW and PW;  I've noticed lately some of my near-GIRs are missing forward, with nothing but grass ahead of me, but 20-30 yards to the pin.  After a few misadventures putting those lately, I wanted to at least get a feeling for what a 30-yard chip shot that doesn't have the variance of my quarter lob wedge would feel like.  I still think "putt when you can putt" is right, but... I am less sure I have a 30 yard putt in me.  Range time also, of course, same routine as the past week or so (drill, 3-4 slow shots, etc).   Did not get to the putting green as it was starting to come down a bit more. Darn, it really is raining.  And I thought today would be a perfect day to play, seeing as how it's 9-18 and all.
    • I'm in the same boat.  I think the last team event I got really excited for was the 2019 Presidents' Cup.  When I first got into golf, the Ryder Cup was an event (one among many) I used to plan my schedule around to make sure I'm able to watch it.   I'm not sure I realized how close it was until I saw this thread pop up.
