I have been doing all sorts of sports my whole life and I never acquired a taste for alcohol.  I also never developed the patience for sitting around in a bar talking for hours when I could be playing tennis or basketball.  Right or wrong my attitude was always... go have a few drinks and then let me run you around the court for a few hours, can't think of anything more enjoyable.

So alcohol and any sports just doesn't mix with me.  This doesn't mean I never drink.  I will occasionally have wine and I can certainly polish off a six-pack in a year or two.

To what extent is alcohol a part of your golf game? Some of the guys I have played with start working on their buzz as soon as they get to the course in the early morning. One of them told me that he plays better when he's had a mixed drink to start things off. He went on to say that the more he drinks the better he plays. I consider some of them functioning alcoholics. How can being impaired help your golf game? When I started playing with this group I partook in the post game libations. I soon realized that this is not fun, especially the next day hangover. I love golf but I can do without the alcohol. I decided that the only way I can join in any post game gathering is with a non-alcoholic brew. Playing with a group where a good number of players use alcohol as part of their ritual has made me examine how I feel about the mixture of golf and alcohol. I see golf as an athletic pursuit. It requires focus and stamina.

I absolutely never drink while playing golf.   Drinking and playing don't mix.   Only hacks think they play better impaired....................

One or two league nights and no more than 3 when shooting 18.  Usually stop for one afterwards.

Depends on what they have. There are some beers that I wouldn't drink for free and at the courses I play no pro bartenders so choices are few. If I am driving I don't period.

That's why you bring your own.

I don't mind tilting a few back while playing with my friends.

We usually start early so we cant get any till after the turn.

We don't get hammered when playing... I don't think that would be possible or fun.  I have seen some drunken fools while out playing.  They usually are trashing the course and slowing it down.  That's when you skip a few holes and play them later.

The best beers are usually at the 19th recapping the round and trash talking each other.

Some friends and I were playing last summer and the course was really backed up. I had a pretty good front nine (41), but we had a lot of time to kill at the turn, so we had a "few" drinks at the clubhouse. Ended up with a 55 on the back, but I'm pretty sure I had a good time.

I am always super amped up before a round.  There are times when I will have one or two drinks to calm me down.  On Friday this back fired on me. Playing a pretty tough course to get on in my area so I was very excited. Had one beer before heading to first tee. On tee lighting struck and all hell broke loose.  2 hour delay until we could go out.  I had about 4 beers and on the first tee realized I was drunk.  Started triple, double, double and started to sober up.  I can't golf drunk.

When playing my local course,I have a beer after the 10th hole, two more after the 14th and a couple in the clubhouse after the round.

Can't wait to get back.

10 weeks without lifting a club.

I've pretty much given up adult beverages and golf, which not that long ago would be crazy talk to me, I'm a drinker and being out there having fun demands a cold beer.

But I realized not long ago that even just one beer affects my game big time, and I'm no lightweight, mostly the tee ball gets too wild.

I'm OK with it though, I'd rather wait until after and drink to a good round than drown my sorrows.

Rarely, but the times I do are basically write-off rounds. Had two rounds this Summer already where both were team scramble tournies for a bday and bachelor party.where maybe 10-12 drinks were had.

Every other round is dry, and honestly, the one course where we got plastered for the bachelor party is one I always wanted to play seriously someday.

For my Thursday league night, it is usually a pint of beer or two before the round, two more on the front nine, two more on the back nine, and a few more in the clubhouse after.  I still post my scores, and try my best, but Thursday is more about riding around the golf course and having fun with my buddies than about golf.  I definitely don't play better because of the beer, but generally, I don't usually play any worse either.  I can't drink like that every day of the week and function though, so days that aren't Thursdays, I tend to limit my intake on the course.

I knew a bloke that polished off 64 cans of Fosters in a 3 day weekend. Somehow he manged to 18 holes in within that time.

In my bag (Motocaddy Light)

Taylormade Burner driver, Taylormade 4 wood, 3 x Ping Karsten Hybrids, 6-SW Ping Karsten irons with reg flex graphite shafts. Odyssey putter, 20 Bridgestone e6 balls, 2 water balls for the 5th hole, loads of tees, 2 golf gloves, a couple of hand warmers, cleaning towel, 5 ball markers, 2 pitch mark repairers, some aspirin, 3 hats, set of waterproofs, an umbrella, a pair of gaiters, 2 pairs of glasses. Christ, it's amazing I can pick the bloody thing up !!

This bloke is amazing. Seriously, after 20 pints he doesn't even slur. He is also a very good golfer, even when sober :-D

My dad used to be friends with Mike Bullard, who was a successful NHL player. Every year, roughly 10-12 guys including my dad and Bullard would take a golf trip to Myrtle Beach in May. When Bullard was with the Penguins, the month of May was typically free. A few hockey players often tagged along, usually minor league guys.

One hockey player felt drunk after they had played 36, after ordering multiple beers every time the car girl came through. They figured out he drank 30 beers that day. He slept in my dad's car until the whole group had showered and was ready to go out for the night. They woke him up, and he decided to come with them and proceeded to drink all night.

Professional athlete. Canadians, man.

Snooker pro Bill Werbeniuk was a legend for his drinking exploits. Below is a bit from his Wikipedia entry.

Some of Werbeniuk's most famous feats of drinking include: 76 cans of lager during a game with John Spencer in Australia in the 1970s;[2]43 pints of lager in a snooker match/drinking contest against Scotsman Eddie Sinclair in which, after Sinclair had passed out following his 42nd pint, Werbeniuk was reported to say "I'm away to the bar now for a proper drink";[7] 28 pints of lager and 16 whiskies over the course of 11 frames during a match against Nigel Bond, in January 1990 – after which Werbeniuk then consumed an entire bottle of Scotch to "drown his sorrows" after losing the match.

Suffice to say he died pretty young.

    • For someone with a very consistent swing speed and ball strike, upgrades may improve performance. For everyday golfers, probably not. I'm a rather odd player. I usually get best performance from basic pro or tour heads, but with lighter stock shaft from the model's standard driver set up. (Yes, current EXS is an exception.) When I get a full driver fitting, I usually try a couple of modest upgrade  (not super magic) shafts. Most of the time upgrade gives a couple of extra yards, or 10 yards less. Remember this about stock shafts: They are matched to a particular driver model to fit the type of player likely to adopt that model. Also, most OEMs offer a variety of stock shafts in their drivers. Test for which one works best. And, the final decider...
    • Uh, seeing you're having trouble with hit-and-miss performance from inherited clubs... Get Fitted! IF the 910H pair don't work, swap them out. Also, only two degrees separation in loft is not much. You might consider a 4W (much more reliable than a 3W) plus hybrid. This would give more distance separation than two Hs. For hybrid, get one you can hit... Maybe a more benevolent 4H. Quite often I try to brand match my bridge clubs (FWs and Hs), and my irons and wedges... but not always. Whatever works!
    • Like others have said, get fitted. Since 2011, I have played some combination of 4W + 7W. I had a Cobra 3H and 4H a couple of years back, and would swap out the 7W for a 3H in cold months (keep out of cold wind, and rough thinner for wayward drives.) The 7W matched up with yardage often with 3H; the current 4H goes almost as long as 7W, but has a lower trajectory. 4H also bumped out 4i in last bag redo; I learned to hit stinger with 4H so that's my driving iron on tight holes with shallow landing area. Again, a side-by-side test will tell you which way to go. If 5W or 3H is meh, keep the 7W. Also, are you looking to replace the 7W with a 5W or 3H, or add a second bridge club (5W or 3H) to your bag?
    • Makes sense and aligns with other literature. Static stretching, especially for longer durations, can impede performance in strength and power activities. I would not want to do like hamstring, quad, and calf stretches then go immediately sprint. To me that sounds like a terrible Idea. I would rather start off walking, then jogging, then running, then ramp up to sprinting.  To me, static stretching isn't even a warmup activity. I like the term warmup; you want to get some exertion going before the activity.      a { text-decoration: none; color: #464feb; } tr th, tr td { border: 1px solid #e6e6e6; } tr th { background-color: #f5f5f5; }
    • Going to Florida for the usual February golf trip, and with our current weather, that date won't get here soon enough. Heading to Augusta GA for the Tuesday Master's practice round, will definitely get some golf in while I'm in the area for a few days. Hope to be able to catch up with @coachjimsc if he's around. Then it's back to Scotland first of July.  Playing 7 new courses, can't wait for that.  Then somewhere after that is the Rhode Island CC Member-Guest and then my normal October golf trip to Myrtle Beach.
