Glad to see Day keep up this level of play from last year. The guy seems to be really determined to keep working at his game. I enjoy watching him play. When his long game is long he's one of those dominant players. He has a fantastic short game and putting game. Ever since his gritty performance at last years US Open he's been one of the golfers I actively root for.

Day has to be the big favorite now going into Augusta. I think at the top of their games, Day is slightly better than Spieth and maybe on par with McIlroy. Of course, the advantage Spieth has over both of them is he tends to be more consistent. My worry with McIlroy at Augusta continues to be his putting. Not sure he can get it done with the flatstick whereas Day is putting out of his mind right now and the rest of his game is pretty stellar as well. And Day has a good track record there. The question for Day is health. Always has been, always will be.

I don't think Spieth has been much more consistent than Day in the last 6-8 months. Right now I'd take Day in a putting contest and we all know who's better off the tee. I think Day getting the proverb monkey of not winning a major off his back is bad for everyone on tour. He has all the tools to win at any venue. It's fun to watch.

Oosthuizen, Day, McIlroy on back problems.

Quote

Dealing with back pain seems inevitable for most pro golfers. (Feel free to weigh in any time on this topic, Tiger).  Day said he and McIlroy even discussed their disc problems during their semifinal match. “You put us in flexion and try and swing a club at 120 miles per hour,” said Day, “and you have than a million swings in your career, sooner or later it’s going to do something.”

Day’s championship opponent, Oosthuizen, also has endured his share of back ailments. Perhaps more than his share. “I’ve had every single lower back issue you can have,” he said Sunday. He recalled being unable to take a backswing due to disc problems or SI joint problems.

The reason, he said, is simple: “It’s chasing swing speed and ball speed. Somewhere something is going to cave.”

It was a great week for golf, I like match play.  I would like to see them reseed going into the Final 16 and Final 8 so that Top 4 guys don't play in a semi-final match.

The Day McIlroy match was the final, IMO.

That was great golf to watch and a true battle.  I thought Rory had the better game but just couldn't make enough birdie putts.  Day hung around and finally got the win.

I guess I have to agree with you.  Watching the semi-final matches finish up, I saw that Oosthuizen closed out his match easily while Day nearly went extra holes.  I thought, "Oostie is coming into this match pretty strong--Day is in trouble."

Clearly I was wrong.  Day had trouble closing his match not because of his play, but because of who he was playing:  Rory McIlroy.  Duh.  Day crushed Oosthuizen in that final match.

(I should note that I only watched the final 3 holes of the semi-final matches.)

Rory's putter was off.  If it was on, I think he'd have crushed Jason.

(but it wasn't......and he didn't - woulda, coulda, shoulda,  )

Rory had many chances to sink a 10 footer for birdie and missed.  Day would scramble to make par and half the hole.

If Rory made half of his chances from inside 15 feet, Rory could have been up 2 or 3 holes.

Day deserved to win but it was a great match.

absolutely agree with this

it's not often where the winner earns it, AND the loser lost it

appeared to be a team effort

That's a savvy idea, but does it mess with fan involvement in filling out brackets?

It could also be an indication of the value of short-game skills in match play when the ball-striking is roughly equal (Day's putting was better throughout too). The loss of the hole on 13 by McIlroy looks to have been a short-game shot. The poor outcome for Rors may have been due to a poor lie, but touch around the greens is a definite edge Day (red) has over Rors (blue).

Good point I didn't think about the brackets.

So excited this is happening in Austin. What little I've seen of the track so far has been impressive.  My son is going to have his party boat anchored near one of the holes on Sat, maybe Sun too (he couldn't care less about pro golf although he does think Joran and Rickie are pretty cool).  Should be a rip-roaring week, wish I could get down there for it.

As for a pick:  I'd be hard-pressed to go outside the top 10 because most of them are on form right now.

Not sure where that comes from because the only pick I made is above. Although admittedly, I didn't go too far out on a limb, I was, in fact, correct.

If you read the post you initially quoted, I said Spieth had an advantage there but then I agreed with you that anything can happen in match play so he wasn't assured of winning.

No need to get your panties in a wad. You asserted that Jordan had a big advantage. I asserted that it would be all but gone by the third or fourth round.

Neither can definitively say they were right, but the story ended up supporting (very little) my position.

The rest is just busting your balls.

Panties well ironed out, I've only gotten upset by something on this site once and that was 2 years ago.  Just setting the record straight.  Keep smiling.
