Bryson DeChambeau is an interesting player to say the least. The article below from just before the Masters discussed how DeChambeau has names for nearly every club in the bag.

Quote

DeChambeau also happens to have a name for nearly every club in his bag. It's common to see a TOUR player with his initials or a movie quote stamped on the back of the wedge, but DeChambeau decided to take the naming process to a completely different level — adding a name to every iron and wedge he currently uses.

Of course, there's a method to DeChambeau's madeness. During Tuesday's press conference, he took a few minutes to go through the bag and discuss the significance behind the name on each club.

3-iron: "Then you've got Gamma, which is the third letter in the Greek alphabet — 3-iron and it's 20 degrees of loft."

5-iron: "Then 5-iron is my favorite par 5 out here, Azalea."

6-iron: "6-iron, Juniper, it's the 6th hole at Augusta [National]."

7-iron: "34-degree, three plus four is seven, OK, and it has Tin Cup, because that was Tin Cup's favorite club."

8-iron: "38-degree is the 8-ball, 8-iron — correlates quite nicely.

9-iron: "Jackie [Robinson] is my 9-iron. No. 42, 42-degree lofted club."

Pitching wedge: "46-degree, 1946, Herman Keiser [former Masters champion]."

Gap wedge: "1950. 50-degree, Jimmy Demaret, won in 1950, so I call him Jimmy. Kind of funny when you ask: 'Hey, give me the Jimmy.'"

Sand wedge: "55, it was Mr. Ward, Harvie Ward, low amateur at the Masters, 1955. U.S. Amateur winner, too."

Lob wedge: "So 1960, who won The Masters? Arnold Palmer. So King is on that wedge. Now I am using Cobra wedges this week, but on the 60-degree it's King."

So this got me to thinking, "What would our faithful Sand Trap members have for club names?" I haven't thought of them all, but below are some of mine.

Driver - Titanic - because it always gives me that sinking feeling.

3W - "Oh Hell No!"

5W - Hit or Miss! (Mostly miss)

3H - Houdini - Because it gets me out of trouble more often than not.

4 iron - Hookie - because I would be better off skipping using it.

5 iron - Bipolar - either good or really, really bad

7 iron - Mr. Reliable

PW - Jack (of all trades) - most versatile club in the bag for me

SW - Sandy - Because my bunker play is like Hurricane Sandy, massively destructive.

LW - Nowhere Man - If I chunk it, it goes nowhere man!

Putter - Scotty - because my name is Scott, duh!

How about your clubs?

I have names for my clubs. Unfortunately it is against the rules to use those names on this forum.  Hmmm? Thinking about it some of the names maybe illegal to use in public also.

Only one club in the bag has a name, "The B".  My granddaughter made a head cover for my 3-wood from one of her soccer socks.  She put a "B" on it for "Brian".  My caddie in Scotland called the club "The B" as in "We'll be want'n to layup up short of the cross bunker, so let's hit The B."  The name stuck.

Driver -- Ginsu because it slices so well

3-Wood, 3H, 4H -- benchwarmers because they never leave the bag

5I -- Will Robinson

6I -- Seriously!?

7I -- Lucy -- because I love it

8I -- Jesus Christ!

9I -- Jimi Hendrix  because it's got manic depression

All Wedges -- Roberto because half the time I want to stab someone when I use them

What did you name your 6i?

If I call them a name, I can't post them on an open forum. :-D

What, no Bender Bending Rodriguez :-D

I would do this but I am horrible at naming things. It would probably take me a few weeks to come up with adequate names.

  • Driver - "Box of chocolates" - cause you never know what you're going to get
  • 3W - "Two Face" - cause it's either good or bad
  • 5W - "Gray" - it's not exciting but works in most instances
  • 4H - "USPS" - Neither snow, nor rain, nor heat, nor gloom of a bad round this club delivers
  • 5i - "Invisible man" - it's in the bag but you'll almost never see it
  • 6i - "Hogan" - usually the club I practice with most at the range
  • 7i - "Winston Wolf" - Pulp Fiction reference, this is my go to club that usually cleans up after a bad drive.
  • 8i - "Par 3" - club I use most on par 3's at my home course
  • 9i - "9 iron" - I don't use it often enough to name it.
  • P - "Weed Whacker" - seems to get most use when I'm in the thick stuff.
  • G - "flopodopolous" - favorite club for flop shot
  • 56* - "Pool side" - this was the club I hit thin out of a bunker and landed in the pool of a house that was behind the green
  • Putter - "Tank" - Odyssey Tank Cruiser

I'd probably named them after musicians, foods, artists, etc... The driver, banana, just out of spite. The 3w, Sid Vicious. And so on.

I just call my clubs "tools". I have a hard enough time remembering names as it is. Adding 14 more would put me over the edge.

Never thought of doing this but after thinking about it I guess it would be kinda fun to have a name for every club in the bag. Pretty good thread.

This is what my lineup would be:

Driver: Brutus, inspired by the Red Hot Chili Peppers

3W: Snooter, it's kind of a good fit for the ball flight

2 driving iron: The rat stick, from "It's always sunny in Philadelphia" because of how truly ugly this club is.

3i: The butter knife

4i: Gump, it always seems to run

5i: ol' faithful, my first ever club when I was little / first named geyser in Yellowstone

6i: Strato, favorite guitar

7i: Bandicoot, damn good childhood video game

8i: Fred Randall, someone has to of seen this movie

9i: Karen, the mountain lion from Talladega Nights

SW: run-around Sue, because I'm always chasing bad shots with this club in hand

LW: Bobby Smith, the lead singer from "The Spinners" ...I feel it only makes sense

Putters:

Hyperion, the nickname for the tallest tree in the world (Coastal Redwood) as I normally putt with a PING Redwood

Homer for the Odyssey #9

In the bag:
Driver: R9 Supertri
3W: R9
3i-PW: Mizuno Mp-68
Wedges: Taylormade Racs
Putter: PING Redwood blade

If I were to name some of them (because I love this thread lol):

D: Spray and pray

3w: minus 2, because I'll probably put myself net 2 strokes behind where I was when I hit it

4h: Robin Hood, because it gets me out of trouble reliably and usually gets me strokes gained

5i: One night stand, because it's usually used after an embarrassing short drive on a par 4

7i: old faithful

pw: Lewinski, because I ***** this club out for so many tasks in my round she gets nice and used

aw or sw: Apollo, because I'm either going to shatter my distance expectations (thin over green) or I'm going nowhere close (major chunk)

D: :tmade: R1 Stiff @ 10* 3W: :tmade: AeroBurner TP 15* 2H: :adams: Super 9031 18* 3-SW: :tmade: R9 Stiff P: :titleist: :scotty_cameron: Futura X7M 35"

Ball: Whatever. Something soft. Kirklands Signature are pretty schweeeet at the moment!
