If I can't find the replay I'd sure like to see (witness) this...and so should @Fourputt!

But the PGA Tour should do the right thing here, send a memo to all PGA Tour players informing them of the rule as written, and tell them that the referees have been told to enforce the rule, and that players found more than twice in a season not protecting the field will face a possible supplemental fine or something.

Bingo. The tour could clean this stuff up in a single written communication, if they were so inclined. And it's baffling to me that they haven't.

For whatever reason, this type of behavior has become normalized on the tour and nobody wants to step out of line for fear of being seen as the bad guy to their peers.

The tour has a greater obligation to the game than any one player. It's strange they essentially looked the other way on this.

More than twice? As in 3 or more times? Seems awfully generous. As much as we have seen this stuff go on over the past few years, I don't remember any repeat offenders as of yet. If you want to really change behaviors, make it zero tolerance - one instance and bam, you're fined.

There's a lot you don't see on TV, and once or twice I could see the player having a legit claim that maybe they were too far away or didn't think that it could assist, and then the players would have insight into how broad the thing is.

I don't know. Much like the NFL has the license to decide which hits are deserving of a fine and which ones are not, I think the PGA could adopt similar discretion in the application of their fines. It's pretty black and white in the Stenson example above.

In the Kokrak example, I could see him getting away with just a warning. But I think if you really want to put an end to this stuff, you have to punish the most egregious examples the moment they happen.

I think this latest example is a good reason why I don’t get too worked up about this and I think it’s sort of “proof” that they’re not doing it to collide, but rather are just being half lazy and half playing the odds that nothing is going to happen.

Stenson was a couple shots off the lead and left his ball there to potentially help the guy he was chasing - he’s obviously not going to collude against himself.

I actually did this a couple of times at the Newport Cup too, and I certainly wasn’t wanting my opponent to hit my ball - I just didn’t want to bother to stop them and figured the chances were plenty high that nothing would happen.

I’d compare it to distracted driving.  Everybody who does it knows it’s stupid but also figures that they’ll beat the odds.

(All of that said, I would be fine with them implementing measures to curb it, because it probably shouldn’t be done, but I’m just currently thinking Its likely not nefarious.)

I see it as them having a bit of an obligation to protect the field, laziness be damned.

I think most all of these balls would have been marked if this were taking place in the Ryder Cup.

I don't think there's anything obvious about that.

If the social penalty outweighs the slim chances of a significantly outweighing financial/prestige gain, I could see leaving the ball there.

The calculus is different, too, when you're talking about a six handicapper versus a PGA Tour player. Better players get their balls nearer to the hole more often, and thus the odds of them being assisted by another ball increase.

And that's match play. You're under no real obligation to protect "the field." Only your interests and, by extension, your team's interests.

I think negligent is a better word, with a dash of perhaps unstated collusion. A growingly pervasive "understanding." I don't think it's done in a nefarious way.

More of this today in the final round of the WGC-HSBC in Shanghai.  On the 15th hole hole, Stenson had pitched from greenside to within a couple feet of the pin.  Koepka and DJ both had shots from greenside bunkers to make, and Stenson didn't mark his ball.  Announcers even commented on it.

Neither of them hit Stenson's ball, but it could have affected the outcome, particularly since these guys (and Justin Rose) were all at the top of the leaderboard.

Similar situation at the 17th hole.  Stenson pitched onto the green to within a few feet, doesn't mark his ball, and then DJ with a shot from a greenside bunker.

Before anyone says "that's in a position to interfere, not assist!" a bunch of players were putting 8, 10, 15 feet past that hole location. It's quite a bit downhill… notice how early it feels like that ball will stop. Yet it keeps going, because it's downhill.

And in the Ryder Cup, I think that ball is absolutely marked.

If that ball was more likely to interfere than assist, Berger would have asked for it marked, too.

agree - it's a great ball if your intent was a good lag vs sinking the shot - even better than a backstop as the ball hits and then stops closer to the hole than farther away.

You guys whine about this too much. If not marking the balls against the rules or not?

It is, yes. Players are obligated to protect the field, but instead, are seemingly more interested in an "everybody does it, you scratch my back, wink wink" situation.

It undermines the competition.

Yes the guy whose ball it was was standing some 20 feet away and had plenty of time to mark.

I was watching this last night. The fact that ball was basically in his line makes it even more obvious he was using it as a backstop. I guarantee if that was an uphill putt that ball would have been in Patrick Reed's pocket.

    • The highlights as I see them: Championship and Challenger Series The creation of the PGA Tour and the PGB Tour, in the words of Joel Dahmen a few years ago. They're calling them the Championship Series (23-24 events) and the Challenger Series (20+ events). Both run February to August. They feel this will achieve three things: increasing the consistency and quality of fields across the season creating a clear system for players to earn and retain status and delivering a more structured and competitive experience for fans and partners—all in an effort to strengthen meritocracy. Championship Series Structure and Eligibility The 23-24 events includes the Players, majors, season-ending events, and the Presidents Cup and Ryder Cup. These will be 72-hole events with a 36-hole cut to the top 65 and ties and purses of $20M+. 120 players without an alternate list. 90 players (roughly) from the previous year and 20 players promoted from the Challenger Series. Full eligibility will be finalized later this year. Sites (cities) to be finalized soon, but 10 of the 15 courses have already been determined. Postseason: includes retention and relegation and concludes with match play. The Tour Championship will also be played across a rotation of prestigious courses. Challenger Series Structure and Eligibility 20+ events. Running concurrently. Will feature players fighting their way back to the Championship Series or players graduating and on the upswing from the Korn Ferry Tour. Many of these events will be current PGA Tour courses. About 7 of the Challenger Series events will be during off weeks for the Championship Series with elevated purses and visibility. Purses of at least $4M, with cuts similar to the Champ series. 144 player fields. Competitive Fields for Both Series Players will be eligible for only one series at a time: Championship Series Players are not eligible for Challenger Series events. Championship Series members will have a known schedule with all events having the same eligibility. Players and Majors will have their own eligibility criteria. Championship Series players don't have to play all events. This begs the question about, say, the Canadian Open, and other "home-town" events that players might want to play, even if they're Challenger Series events. Will releases be granted? Promotion and Relegation At least 90 players will be retained in the Championship Series, and 20 players will be promoted from the Challenger Series each year. Battlefield promotion for two-time winners from the Challenger Series. Players relegated from the Championship Series will have a "last chance" opportunity to retain status, or will go to the Challenger Series. Criteria will be finalized before the start of the 2027 season. Points System New points system (not FedExCup points). Separate points systems for the Championship and Challenger Series. Elevated points in the Challenger Series for off-weeks on the Championship Series. More details tk. Elevated International Events in the Fall The fall schedule will include a limited series of elevated international events with top players from the Championship Series, with the intent to deliver in partnership with the DP World Tour as part of the Strategic Alliance. Last Chance Series The Tour will develop a “last chance” series of 4-6 events in the fall, with a limited number of spots on the Championship Series available for top finishers. Eligibility will include players relegated from the Championship Series, Challenger Series players, and other categories to be determined. Q-School continues, as do the Korn Ferry Tour and PGA Tour Latinoamerica. Also, Brian Rolapp is the new commissioner as of January 1, 2027.
