Some of the favorites have had up and down tournaments lately like Rory, Rickie, etc. Could we see a newcomer win this year at TPC Sawgrass?

Here's the field.

I'm going out of town this weekend; I'll only catch bits and spurts.

Never been a fan of Sawgrass but the strength of the field usually gets me to tune in for some of it at least.

It's a quirky (and IMO gimmicky) course that doesn't suit that many players well so it's usually a pretty wide open field. Wouldn't be surprised to see a relative no-namer win this week.

GC doing "Live from The Players"...except they are in studio. Budget cuts GC?

Anyway, great field this week. Gimme Justin Rose.

I too think it's a gimmicky at least some of the holes. But it is very entertaining to say the least.

I enjoy watching the Players and will be watching this weekend.

This tournament can produce an unlikely winner.

It's a good tournament but it registers with me similar to a WGC event because the best players are there, not lIke a major.  In fact, I like the WGCs better because there is no cut so you get to see a bit more of the top players.

Last year's was awesome, Rickie was motivated by that anonymous survey which labeled him overrated and he proved himself in a big way on Sun.  Hope for that kind of drama from our current big 4 this week.  (I don't include Bubba in that list even tho he's ranked higher than Rickie).

Any idea why they leave Day out of the top 5 in the power rankings?  He's #1 in the world and arguably the best short game player right now.  I do remember reading that some were concerned about his driving accuracy.  Is Sawgrass a particularly narrow course?

The fairways at Sawgrass aren't particularly narrow, but any drive that misses is going to find sand, water, or a very uneven lie. Hard to make birdies that way.

I think it's about time for Rory to put 4 rounds together. He's been in the hunt a lot lately.

#6 was awesome.  I knew he had made a "hole-in-three" there, but I didn't realize it was a swish.  That has to be my favorite shot in golf...there's no suspense, no drama, no anticipation...just...CLUNK.

I don't know how to find all-time statistics for the 17th hole, but Fred Couples has to be near the top of the list of scoring leaders.

I don't get why putts are rated higher than holes-in-one? I could make those putts.

    • Depends on the lie, pin location, green.  I would say most of my pitches are with my 60-degree.  Its probably like 90% 60-degree, 10% 56 degree.
    • Depends on my lie and the green I am working with. If I want to fly and stop, my 58* If I am looking for it to run a bit, my 54* And on occasion if the lie and green call for it, punch and run with my 7i
    • I did the RTJ trail, we just did Grand National and Capitol Hill. We were trying to minimize travel time. It gave us 5 courses to play. You pare playing 3 of the 5 we played.  If I had to pick, I would play the Lakes over the Links at Grand National. Links felt too penal on approach shots. If you can't get height or spin, it felt like every ball that hit the center of the green ran off the back. A lot of the greens require force carry, no running it up. It just wasn't that fun to play.   Judge - Really good course, some really cool holes and terrain.   Senator - Really fun open course. They call it link style, I can't remember how much you can play the ball down, but it has the aesthetic appeal.
    • I do that at the range; I just have been going through a half-assed pre-shot routine. 😇 I just kind of waltz up to the ball and hit it. I catch myself just going through the motions of aiming. Once I started aligning my club to an intermediate target, I felt like I was aligned way open to the target but just trusted it. Like, if the club was aimed at the flag in the middle of the green, then my body was aligned left of the green or more (assuming something like a 100+ yard shot). I think I was more concerned with where my feet were lined up and not the clubface.  A question on alignment then.  So, the ball is like what, 3-FT away from the toe target line. So, does that mean if my toe line is aimed at the flag, the club is aimed 3-ft right? Does the perception of the green looking smaller in the distance impact that in terms of how we hit the shot? I feel like the geometry should work that the ball is actually aimed 3-FT right.
