Dear golfers,

Can we carry-on one golf club (Driver) in the airplane, within US or to Europe?

Recently I don't recall any passenger to carry on a club in the airplane, domestic or International plane.

I understand that security has been tightened lately, but I know this was ok many years ago.

Thanks.

I don't think you'd be able to carry a golf club onto an airplane. You can probably find a pretty small bag to check though.

In my bag:

Driver: Titleist TSi3 | 15º 3-Wood: Ping G410 | 17º 2-Hybrid: Ping G410 | 19º 3-Iron: TaylorMade GAPR Lo |4-PW Irons: Nike VR Pro Combo | 54º SW, 60º LW: Titleist Vokey SM8 | Putter: Odyssey Toulon Las Vegas H7

Jamo,

Thanks for reply.

I want to avoid extra charge on the additional bag or package or mishandling, especially on the Driver.

Are there anyone who have recently carried on a Driver in a domestic or international flight?

Thanks.

The 45" length of a driver would pretty much eliminate it as potential carry on aside from the "potential weapon" implications. Invest in a hard case for your clubs.

I air travel frequently, over 50 flights a year on average. I'm pretty confident that there is no way in hell you'll be allowed to bring a golf club on as carry-on.

You should be fine:

Through TSA’s layered approach to security, and to align more closely with International Civil Aviation Organization standards, effective April 25, 2013 TSA will allow knives that do not lock, and have blades that are 2.36 inches or 6 centimeters or less in length and are less than 1/2 inch in width, novelty-sized and toy bats, billiard cues, ski poles, hockey sticks, lacrosse sticks and two golf clubs as part of their carry-on baggage. This is part of an overall Risk-Based Security approach, which allows Transportation Security Officers to better focus their efforts on finding higher threat items such as explosives.

What is their stance on practice swings in the fuselage?

Thanks, Iacas.

I will carry on one Driver with me without  any packaging.  I will have to pass through security check and X-ray scanning.

By the way, my flight will be from Toronto Pearson airport to EU, so I hope Canada will have the same regulation as US since they are part of NA (North America).

I will let you know if I will get into any trouble.

(I will not do practice swing inside the plane, but I may try while I wait around boarding area.:banana:)

Thanks!

Let us know how it works out. I'm pretty skeptical of your chances, regardless of the Huffington Post article, but am interested to hear how it really plays put.

That's a set. The TSA explicitly allowed two clubs as carry on a few years ago. I took two clubs on a trip to Florida.

Maybe it changed since then again though.

There are coat closets on most planes that can stow a driver or other larger delicate items.  I don't know the rules for international flights but I have seen people carry drivers, guitars and hockey sticks on domestic flights within the last few years.

Thanks!

If you remember, please check in with us after you try. I've got a flight to Italy in August to visit my daughter and son-in-law for a while. He has a set of clubs cobbled together without a driver, and I happened to win a driver in a contest here last year, so that frees up my old one. He isn't aware I'm thinking of bringing it, but it would be a cool surprise.

I went to this page too, and there's a search box to check  specific items.  One choice is "1 golf club", and the response is that it must be checked.

I also googled this, and find the following article, dated just a couple months after the HuffPost article:

http://www.foxnews.com/us/2013/06/05/tsa-drops-plan-to-allow-airline-passengers-to-carry-small-knives-bats-golf.html

Apparently the TSA changed their mind.

Hello friends in golf:

I am back from trip to Europe.

I successfully delivered the driver to my son in law a couple of weeks age in Brussels.

First, no carryon allowed in airplane.

So, I checked in the club as it was packaged when delivered from online order.  Please see the picture. Airline counter instructed me to put the club as an oversized item, and there was no extra charge at least for my case this time.  Remember that they classified it as oversized.

I was able to pick the club at the baggage claim area in Brussels.

Case closed.

Thanks and have a wonderful July 4th!

Thanks for the update. I'm heading to Italy in a few weeks, so it's good to get confirmation that this is basically how it would be. Interesting that you had no extra charge though- that was what surprised me.

I'm surprised anyone really expected it to be otherwise, but I'm glad we have a definitive (for now anyway) answer, as it would really suck if someone only found out at security that they would have to leave the club behind.

I have one more comment to make.

I was waiting and waiting at baggage claim area in Brussels, but I could not see the club on the circulating belt.  I was a last person to check for club, but I did not see.  At that point, I almost gave up the club and I was devastating and ready to report Lost Item, but I decided to check the opposite area in front of hole where luggage is coming out of.  See, there the packaged golf club was sitting on another box, just out side of belt.  This was why I could not see the club on the circulating belt.  I guess the club was very light, and it must be thrown out on the floor when it first came out of hole.  I was so delighted when I found it.

Well, goof luck to RandallT heading to Italy.  Your effort will be much appreciated.  In fact, I was ready to pay extra charge, but I was OK.

    • Last year I made an excel that can easily measure with my own SG data the average score for each club of the tee. Even the difference in score if you aim more left or right with the same club. I like it because it can be tweaked to account for different kind of rough, trees, hazards, greens etc.     As an example, On Par 5's that you have fescue on both sides were you can count them as a water hazard (penalty or punch out sideways), unless 3 wood or hybrid lands in a wider area between the fescue you should always hit driver. With a shorter club you are going to hit a couple less balls in the fescue than driver but you are not going to offset the fact that 100% of the shots are going to be played 30 or more yards longer. Here is a 560 par 5. Driver distance 280 yards total, 3 wood 250, hybrid 220. Distance between fescue is 30 yards (pretty tight). Dispersion for Driver is 62 yards. 56 for 3 wood and 49 for hybrid. Aiming of course at the middle of the fairway (20 yards wide) with driver you are going to hit 34% of balls on the fescue (17% left/17% right). 48% to the fairway and the rest to the rough.  The average score is going to be around 5.14. Looking at the result with 3 wood and hybrid you are going to hit less balls in the fescue but because of having longer 2nd shots you are going to score slightly worst. 5.17 and 5.25 respectively.    Things changes when the fescue is taller and you are probably going to loose the ball so changing the penalty of hitting there playing a 3 wood or hybrid gives a better score in the hole.  Off course 30 yards between penalty hazards is way to small. You normally have 60 or more, in that cases the score is going to be more close to 5 and been the Driver the weapon of choice.  The point is to see that no matter how tight the hole is, depending on the hole sometimes Driver is the play and sometimes 6 irons is the play. Is easy to see that on easy holes, but holes like this:  you need to crunch the numbers to find the best strategy.
    • Very much so. I think the intimidation factor that a lot of people feel playing against someone who's actually very good is significant. I know that Winged Foot pride themselves on the strength of the club. I think they have something like 40-50 players who are plus something. Club championships there are pretty competitive. Can't imagine Oakmont isn't similar. The more I think about this, the more likely it seems that this club is legit. Winning also breeds confidence and I'm sure the other clubs when they play this one are expecting to lose - that can easily become a self-fulfilling prophecy.
    • Ah ok I misunderstood. But you did bring to light an oversight on my part.
    • I was agreeing with you/jumping off from there.
