Im a GHIN 20ish handicapper... I used Diablo edge irons for 5 seasons and couldnt hit them properly scoring in the 120's... This season I am using MB 714's and my scores are at 100... Everytime I mishit during play some dude tells me "Those irons (MB 714's) are for advanced players"... Tried using Speedblades today... And can't hit them properly either.... I play my best and lowest scores are with my blades but according to many those are for single handicappers and "advanced" players... What am I doing wrong? Enlighten me PLEEEAAASSE...

You're using irons at the extremes.  The Callaway Diablo Edges are shovels, huge cavity back with a ton of offset and the Titleist 714 MB's are blades with no offset and offer very minimal forgiveness on bad shots.  I played the Diablo Edges for one season and couldn't stand them, so I'm not surprised you don't like them or hit them well.

If you play the MB's well, stick with them and don't worry about what others tell you.  If you decide to look for something more forgiving, the Titleist AP1 / AP2 would be a good choice or if you like Callaway, the Apex CF16's are a great compromise.

Have you taken any lessons ? That or post up swing videos on the video board here. Try that.......in the meantime play the gear you have confidence in . Prior to ping everyone played blades

Blade irons typically come in  heavier swingweights which can help those that have tempo issues/too quick off the top. Or there really isn't a pattern and you just had a bad day with the speedblades.

Maybe the blades just fit your eye better. Like how some players aim/putt better with a mallet over a blade and vice versa. Try playing 10 rounds with the blades and 10 rounds with the Speedblades and see which ones you really do score better with.

Or there could be something else at play. The weight, shafts, length and lie might fit your better than the speedblades.

See if you can get yourself fit.  Maybe your clubs are not suited to your swing.  Lie, shaft and even COG on the club head can all make a huge difference to consistency

What's in the bag

Sorry forgot to mention that I was fitted and was recommended the Speedblades... Hence the reason why I tried them on the course but the result was a disaster....

Yes... Definitely extremes that's why I am so perplexed and bothered by it... Will need to definitely look into other irons that you suggested thank you

In the end, it really doesn't matter whether you play blade or not. What matters is which you score better with. There's no need to really get too worked up about what other people say you should or shouldn't play. It's good that you are open to trying different clubs, but don't get too caught up in it right now. Your time would probably be much better spent working on your swing.

I wouldn't look for answers in any one round. As a 20 something handicapper the dispersion of your best to worst scores is going to be significant. Even if you improve there will still be a sizable spread, for example in my last 20 rounds the best to worst rounds typically have an 8-15 stroke difference.

Equipment isn't going to fix anything it's just a way to fine tune our skill but it is what it is. I could use ladies clubs and have my best or worst day I have no idea when it's going to happen. If you were fit for the Speedblades that means those clubs produced the best numbers for you. I'd play several rounds before making any judgment.

Dave :-)

Yeesh...

Yeah...i dont screw around with blades, man.. I find that 90% people I've seen play them do so solely because of ego. If you're not a tour level or elite amateur ball striker (like +4), you probably shouldn't be swinging a pure blade. Even i use a game improvement Tiitleist AP1irons above the 6 iron. Blades are fine off of perfect lies, but get a little grass behind the ball and you better not miss-hit them lol.

But if you're confident in them then go fot it. If you're unsure, get something a little more friendly.

If you keep using the blades you might grow into them over time. For your level of play, it might even speed up your development. Because as i said earlier, you cant mis-hit those things.

How did you find that out?

That's totally bogus. I know single digit handicap players who handle blade irons just fine.

Essentially - outside of the "in betweens" . .the difference between a blade and a cavity back is that:

With a blade you get more spin.  More spin equals more control.  In order to get this spin, the mass of the clubhead is concentrated near the center of the face and, consequently, the sweet spot is small.  If you miss the sweet spot, you will lose distance.

With a cavity back, the weight is pushed to the perimeter, making the effective sweet spot much bigger. This reduces spin, increases distance and gives you somewhat less control.  With an SGI iron like the Big Bertha, you can hit it all over the face and still get consistent distances.

It's really just a choice of what you prefer and what fits your game.  It's true that to get the most out of blades, you need to be hitting the sweet spot just about all the time.  It's also true that an SGI club can't "fix" a truly bad swing.

I recently switched from Big Bertha irons to Mizuno MP-53's.  The MP-53's are small cavity backs - much thinner profile.  I hit them a little shorter than my big berthas but I feel more consistent with them . .this is due primarily to appearance - ie-  the thin top line - and probably nothing else.

If you take a lesson, you might also get some launch data on the irons. What shaft and flex are you using in the irons?

Remember, the shaft is half (or some of our brethren say more than half) of the golf club. Make sure you're not fighting a shaft that's too heavy or stiff for your swing pattern.

Did you get fitted for the MB 714s?

Focus, connect and follow through!

My advice is play w what you are comfortable w and what you like the most. I almost didn't get my ap2 irons last year because I was scared into thinking it was more of a better players club. I hit them fine and love the way they fee and look and might end up getting a set of muscle back titleists next year when they release new ones.
