Put me down for whatever. I'm outta there! I don't do snakes.

BTW - They found a nasty bugger in a storage closet here at work yesterday. Just one of the many things I have to get used to living in FL.

Oooh. What was it?  I have seen pygmy rattlesnakes and I have seen an eastern diamondback. I may have pictures of the one I shooed out of the road so it wouldn't get ran over. Even the rattlesnake was a somewhat cool customer. He didn't want any trouble or to be troubled. Funny story around that one with a guy trying to put it in a five gsllon bucket.  Told him if he got hit I wasnt driving his dumb ass to the hospital.

Yup, that's something you'll get used to down here, one of the things I like about playing some courses here is the wildlife you can see. I'm playing a course tomorrow where it's not unusual at all to see snakes, gators, deer, turkey, hawks, Eagles and even the occasional Florida panther.

It would be awesome to play a round with some professional hockey players. ;-)

The snakeS (yes, that's plural) they have been finding in the building are eastern coral rattlesnakes. One of the aforementioned poisonous snakes. <shiver>

I so want to see a coral snake. They are freakin cool. They say you "could" handle one with relative confidence it won't mess you up but still not worth the risk for every day people like me/us. I guess it's a snake that knows it's the baddest in the land so doesn't always have to prove it. Crazy as it sounds but if a professional snake handler (with anti venom) had one and said I could hold it, I probably would.

We used to spend a lot of time in Oak Creek Canyon when I was young (between Flagstaff and Sedona Az) and my mom told me of a few instances fishing at dusk where they would come out and be active and even had one slither by her foot.

I was playing at one of my favorite courses in New Jersey late in the evening a few years back.  I was by myself on the furthest hole out on the course.

The pin was all the way in the back of the green, on top of a plateau.  After I made my putt, I was walking off the green and had turned around to snap a photo of the hole.  I stepped back a few feet to get a better shot and all of a sudden, this thing darted out in front of me.

It scared me half to death!  It was easily 8 feet long and about as thick as a baseball bat.  No idea what kind of snake it was or anything else... I just knew I had to leave it alone.

I'm not a snake person... at all.

Yeah that looks like a rat snake. They're common in NW jersey. Is that where the course was?

I just leave the snakes to do their thing, it's just golf and I'm there to have fun not disrupt the critters. That said couple years ago I was playing a par 5 where a tree on the right side of the fairway is my target when the flag is left side of the green because it's a good angle. The tree is kind of weird in Dr. Seuss way in that it's not really an obstacle unless the ball is directly behind the trunk. Not real tall with a high canopy so under it, around it, whatever is a good spot to hit a half shot and use the green to get it close. It's a good birdie hole.

So I hit it by the tree as usual and take my shot. I was about 6 feet or so right of it with my back to the trunk and my cart partner stats laughing and I'm all what is the problem. He points to the tree and I turn around and there was not a bare spot of bark literally dozens to hundreds of snakes crawling all over it, in the braches over me just everywhere. Now every time I pass that tree I look at it for snakes and it's still my target.

And you moved to Florida!!!!!!!!

Back in '92, my wife and I vacationed on Marco Island. We went to play golf. On the way into the clubhouse, we stepped over what looked like a long black hose. I looked back and it slithered into the bushes. I did not tell her until after the round otherwise we would not have played. :-P

I ran over a seven footer at The Witch in Myrtle Beach once. My buddies in the cart in front of me also ran it over. They didn't even notice it. I thought it was an usual stick until it was too late. The snake seemed fine, darted back into the swamp.

For those familiar with the course, it was on the long path from #9 back to the clubhouse. The front nine is the nine holes in the middle of the swamp.

This is actually one of my favorite courses. I know exactly the drive you speak of. We played late one day and were coming back down that path in near darkness. Creepy is a good word for it.

Yep!  I grew up in Morris County and lived there until 2.5 years ago.  This was at Berkshire Valley Golf Course in Jefferson.

I used to go camping out in that area all the time and I'd see snakes... but that one snuck up on me and was way bigger than I was comfortable with!

Ah, I know the place. Ive played there once. Kinda pricey if you're not a resident.

For a county course... definitely.  There are much nicer options for not that much more money a few miles away at the Crystal Springs Resort.

I lived in the county and had a resident card, so... I think when I was playing, it was like $40 or something for the round at Berkshire.  When the place first opened, it was insanely popular.  As time went on, it wasn't maintained as well and people stopped going.

A shame, really.  I loved the challenge there.

I don't remember too much about the course (this was over a year ago), but i thought it could have been maintained better for the price, too. I do remember enjoying scenery there.
