The "yeah, right" was in response to the OP.

He might show, but we really have no reason to expect that he will.  Moreover, I doubt that his game has changed dramatically in the last 3 weeks.

So put a little wager on it. I'm sure you'll find some takers.

And three weeks is a long time. He said he felt a little off on the partial shots… the 150-yard 7-irons, etc. Arguably the GOAT can't tweak that in three weeks?

And we have plenty of reasons to expect that he'll show. It's his tournament, benefitting his foundation, and he's played in it about as often as he could.

Plus, it's not like it's happening this Thursday.

It's a month away. So three weeks is closer to seven or eight.

Like I said, he might show.  Hell, it's one way to guarantee a top 20 finish...

Really?  The best you have to hope for/bet on is that he'll actually make it to the first tee in an 18 man event?

You want a bet?  Let's bet on whether he finishes in the top half.  Surely the "GOAT" can do that in an 18 man field.

No. I didn't say anything like that.

My mistake.

I take it that it's a "no" on finishing in the top half?  Hell, he's only gotta beat 9 guys....

Believe me, at this point, what difference does it make?

THAT, I can tell you.

Edit:  apologies, guess I'm missing the political threads a little.

Lol, the "believe me" part sounds a bit "Trump-ish." :)

That aside, I agree with you.  When he backed out of Safeway, my reaction was "aw, darn" and that was it.  Each passing time would get even less of a reaction.  We've got DJ and Spieth and Rickie and Rory and JD and so on and so on ... we're all good.

I hope he comes back, definitely, but if he didn't?  Oh well, no biggie.

If you say so.

It's arguable. Some say he's GOAT. Some don't. Thus, arguable.

I don't really care. And again, that's not what you first said.

Yeah, but 90% of TST members voted in a poll that he IS the GOAT, therefore... Wait, what?  Lol.

It's just under 70%.

And @Golfingdad, it's the top story in the sidebar of golf.com. It still matters to enough people. Though less than it did three weeks ago, and less than it did a year ago, yes.

If he begins to play well, though, it will ramp up again. Not to the 2015 levels, even, but up.

Of course it matters.  This thread is already longer than the whole Safeway thread, and if he indeed plays in his tournament I have no doubt ratings will be big, and the length of the thread about it will exceed the length of the threads for any of the playoff tournaments - and very likely all of them together.  If a miracle happens and he is anywhere near the top gong into the weekend I would expect the TV ratings to exceed those of any of the playoffs.

But then again, what the hell do I know?

It matters because I'm sure all of you and the golf viewing world have been glued to the TV watching the Safeway, CIMB, Sanderson Farms and WGC events! (sarcasm). The TV ratings for Tiger's event will surpass the four previous events combined if he shows up. He moves the needle.

We like Spieth, DJ, Day and the rest of the young guns but they aren't dominating like Tiger, Jack and Arnie did.

Even though most of us have come to terms with the unlikeliness of Tiger beating Jack's Major record, the potential (however small) is still there if he's back on the Tour playing golf.  We all want to see history made.

An 18 player exhibition, in a nice warm place, no cut, supports his own charity, this actually makes sense to me, much more sense than coming back to a real competitive event. I hope it works out.

I'll second this.  It's good for the game if Tiger is relevant at all.

I don't care what all the haters say. Until TW himself announces he is done for good, I will be rooting for a return and hopefully a good showing. I never doubted and still don't doubt that he had every intention of playing Safeway. It's not he was just effing with people.

I don't know about the last one. I thought the playoffs were pretty good. Up against early football season, though.

Tiger attracts interest because even if you don't personally rank him GOAT he is most certainly one of the greatest golfers of all time and the only with that claim currently playing. It's always interesting to watch one of the best of all time compete - in any sport. It's one of the reasons Usain Bolt or Michael Phelps generated so much coverage during the Olympics.

    • Day 211 (29 Nov 24) - Friday men’s round albeit a solo foursome (temps in the 40’s, day after Thanksgiving and the average age closer to 75 - I’m a youngster at 65).  Interesting day of semi-solid play (8 of 18 GIR). Hit all four par threes in one (a first) - parred each; still had a couple 3 putt bogies; and blew up on 3 of the par 5’s (go figure)). The blow ups were some serious tree rattlers - amplifying how I got stupid and greedy instead of smart and content to just get back in the short stuff.
