Quote

Not many tour players carry handicap indexes, much less post their own scores, including those shot in tournament play, but Paul Goydos is among their ilk and surely the most diligent in doing so.

How diligent? Goydos shot an eight-under par 62 on the Cochise Course at Desert Mountain Golf Club in Scottsdale, Ariz., in the first round of the Charles Schwab Cup Championship on Friday (and taking a three-stroke lead in the process) and the score already shows up at GHIN.com.

Here is the proof:

So I guess we show this to every poster that wants to become a pro with a single digit cap!

Well, to be fair, his is single digit...  ;-)

He also pretty much defines the term journeyman.  2 wins in over 500 starts for his career.  Tiger Woods he ain't.

Agree. But +3.8 is orders of magnitude higher than 3.8 in terms of ability. Even this journeyman is way better than a scratch golfer.

@David in FL, do you think that would indicate the top 100 are usually more in the +5 to +6 range (or higher)? Surprising to see a CR of 70 on the sheet. I thought good players wouldn't be caught dead on a 'rinky dink' course.

I'm thinking back to the "what would a tour pro shoot at your home course" thread: Paul Goydos may be the very definition of an average PGA Tour golfer, and his all-time low index is +4.7.

I wonder if his 59 at the John Deere a few years ago counted toward that index.

In my UnderArmour Links stand bag...

Not sure why you're surprised, not every golfer lives or plays on the toughest courses in the country.  Maybe a friend or family member invited him to play a round of golf on their home course or it was a vacation resort course.

I think every tourplayer is better then +4 (Goydos also). They play rounds during pga-tournament circumstances. That is mostly far more difficult then cr and sr implies.

i think it shows just how tough golf is on the pro level.... even when you are a +3 / +4 handicap type....

It is what it is

I could make a case for the opposite: that some players perform better under pressure.

Never mind that they're playing with fellow good players, they have a caddie helping them, and the crowds almost guarantee they'll never lose a golf ball.

I know lots of players who play better under a little pressure, when the score "counts" for more than a $5 match.

Totally agree. I am one of those people that I LOVE being under pressure, as I will typically perform at my highest level.

UNFORTUNATELY golf seems to NOT be one of those things! So strange, because it's literally the only exception I can think of.

Ok, I think you are right if you imply that most (allmost all?) pga-pro's don't play to their potential when they just play a round with friends for handicap purposes.

The +4 or better for pga-pro's was my estimate of their true potential.

Mr. Goydos is not posting correctly.  I believe his efforts on the Champions Tour warrant a "T" posting.  Not that it amounts to much in his case.

Also, nice win at the Schwab Cup for the lowly +3 handicapper.  ;-)

LOL, its not like he's going to get the Index reduction for exceptional tournament scores.  And if you actually look at the table in the handicap manual, his low scores would have to be even lower than those two best ones (62 and 64) for the reduction to kick in.

+4 is the magic number  . .I think.  If you can get to +4 you can think about pro golf.  You may fail out miserably - but at least you can consider it without people flat out laughing at you.

I think Goydos keeps a HC because he likes to gamble a bit with his non-pro buddies when they go on golf outings/trips.....I have previously heard him talking about him and a few buddies doing a trip to Bandon Dunes....seems like a solid dude to play/hang out with

I think thats becoming more the case these days. Back in the late 60's my uncle played high level amateur golf. In those days he was scratch and after finishing runner up in one of the big comps he was approached by an agent offering to sponsor him to turn pro.

He turned it down as he didnt think he was good enough to compete. He's one of the best golfers i have seen even approaching his 70's.
