I'm looking to get a practice net to hit balls in at home. Not really sure where to start. I know Callaway makes one but have read mixed reviews (8' Quad net seems to have the best reviews). The Net Return Pro looks good, but decently expensive.  Curious what members on here use? I have some large trees in the back and was thinking of hooking up a net between them with some fisheye hooks with a chain on the bottom for weight, but not sure where to get a net strong enough to withstand driver shots. Any thoughts would be appreciated! Thanks!

I've had a net return for about 5 years and I can't say enough good things about it. Rock solid, quiet and totally secure.  It does cost a bunch but mine looks brand new after years of fairly heavy use.

You can buy netting, though, if you want to rig your own and it's pretty cheap. Just google "golf netting".

I also have a real feel golf mat. Also spendy but oh-so-nice...a and durable!

lots to choose from on ebay. Gourok, Westcoast netting, Rukknet. Get a tight weave impact panel. Also Harbor Freight has a weaved, vinyl tarp on the cheap, never used one though.  I would stay away from the commercial, tent-like nets like Calloway.  The net return is one of the best, but pricey.

I've heard that archery netting works really well.

I really like Hank Haney's backyard net... the whole backyard for that matter.

that's ideal. solid posts, probably set in concrete, steel cable, easy net replacement, impact panel. Nice putting green, looks like Syntec

So now what if we're not rich?  Seriously though, I just started looking at nets and hitting mats for the winter, so this could be really helpful.  Could PVC work to build a frame?

Yep, if my wife would let me take up this much of our small backyard this is what I'd get:

That is pretty nice and has a small footprint.  Awesome sell on the wife would be if you had kids... Honey, Johnny can hit baseballs into it, practice soccer kicks and if he happens to not be using it, I can maybe see if it might be used for golf.

It's the real feel country club elite 4x5.  I've been hitting off the same spot since I got it in 2011. It does show some wear in that spot but not bad enough to rotate it.  The stuff they say about hitting down and through is not so much reality, imo...but it is a super thick mat.

The Real Feel mats are among the best.  I went with Monster Mats, (All Turf) which in my opinion are nearly as good. You can find them on Amazon or Ebay.  I do have a Real Feel hitting strip however.

I have the Calloway net. It goes up pretty easy and works well. If you have issues with the "S word", you might want to set up a piece of wood or something along the side.

They are okay. I had a cheaper version a few years back, and a drive would go clean through the net if I did not hit the impact panel. Ditto on the "s". (another reason for the cage).

I don't hit drivers into it. I usually only hit 7 or 8i, sometimes a PW, but I don't want to go much higher for fear that I will launch it clean over the net. I would love to have a basement where I could keep it set up all the time.

I just bought a Rukket Haack Net on Amazon that is suppose to have a lifetime warranty.   It is 10' x 7' and cost about $110.   It received great reviews on Amazon.

Good luck with that now that you live in Florida.

    • Day 11: did mirror work for a while. Worked on the same stuff.
    • I'm not sure you're calculating the number of strokes you would need to give correctly. The way I figure it, a 6.9 index golfer playing from tees that are rated 70.8/126 would have a course handicap of 6. A 20-index golfer playing from tees that are rated 64/106 would have a course handicap of 11. Therefore, based on the example above, assuming this is the same golf course and these index & slope numbers are based on the different tees, you should only have to give 5 strokes (or one stroke on the five most difficult holes if match play) not 6. Regardless, I get your point...the average golfer has no understanding of how the system works and trying to explain it to people, who haven't bothered to read the documentation provided by either the USGA or the R&A, is hopeless. In any case, I think the WHS as it currently is, does the best job possible of leveling the playing field and I think most golfers (obviously, based on the back & forth on this thread, not all golfers) at least comprehend that.
    • Day 115 12-5 Skills work tonight. Mostly just trying to be more aware of the shaft and where it's at. Hit foam golf balls.
    • Day 25 (5 Dec 25) - total rain day, worked on tempo and distance control.
    • Yes it's true in a large sample like a tournament a bunch of 20 handicaps shouldn't get 13 strokes more than you. One of them will have a day and win. But two on one, the 7 handicap is going to cover those 13 strokes the vast majority of the time. 20 handicaps are shit players. With super high variance and a very asymmetrical distribution of scores. Yes they shoot 85 every once in a while. But they shoot 110 way more often. A 7 handicap's equivalent is shooting 74 every once in a while but... 86 way more often?
