6/20/17:

Some iron shots this morning. Again my foci were good relaxed tempo and hitting the spot on the ground just in front of the ball. Some solid 6-iron shots were flying 180 yards. The two or three 3-iron shots were flying 215-220. What is going on? No idea, just a straight or slight draw shot. I think I'll build on this and see if it works up and down the bag.

Good luck and hope all of your parts are good today.

I hit a small bucket today without pain- just mild discomfort but that's apparently good. Just slow swings with full range of motion. Didn't work on my last lesson priority- just focused on full shoulder turn while keeping head pointed toward ball (has been the range of motion issue I've been battling).  Big success

They weren't. My wrist hurt from the first to last shot. I had it wrapped too.

June 21 - Off day. I did some shoulder turn work at my desk, but I need to give the wrist a break.

6/21: Another successful day at range. Gentle swings with full shoulder turn. Also added left hip awareness from last lesson- pull it through aggressively near impact.

Putted for 30min. 8ft with 1-3% slope.

Forgot to post yesterday, but didn't forget to practice.  I'm out of it for the month anyway, but I'd like to record it for practice (I aim to succeed at the challenge in July and going forward).  I will then write about today's.

6/20:  was meeting some friends after work, but got out of work before they did.  I went to the range first, small bucket, outdoors.  I hit entirely 6-irons, checking first my grip, then my backswing, with my usual two good practice backswings (usually with one slow forward) before hitting a shot.  It took me over an hour for my bucket of 40 balls!

I then went to the putting green, working 3' putts for a while.  I had a realization, and I don't know how accurate it is, and it worries me because I still don't know.  The motion to hit a 3' putt is much smaller.  I wonder how much of my pushing and pulling was because I made too much back motion!  I ordered a metal yardstick today and maybe I'll find out before too long.

6/21, similar routine as yesterday, different range (grass this time).  Took about an hour to get through the bucket of 33, although I took a few breaks (it felt hotter today) and also had to clean my clubs a bit more than on the mat range.  I was able to hit some 5-woods, a few 3-woods, and some drivers too, although as usual, it was primarily my 6-iron.

I then went to the putting green for an hour, largely on putts 5' and in.  My aim was to use a routine and hit them without having to go further back than forward and also start them on my line.  I'm worried I'm getting in my head about putting.  My promise to myself is that tomorrow, when I get to play, I'm going to relax when I putt.  Let's see if I keep that promise.

June 21st:- Midwinter solstice here. Practiced 20 minutes with Driver and 3 wood. Focused on making a relaxed shoulder turn during the backswing to prevent me raising my head.

6/22:

Spent 2 hours at the driving range.   I flighted my wedges and hit them well.   I worked with my 3 wood and driver, focusing on key #1 and key #2.    I was also able to spend about 30 minutes in the sand trap practicing.   That is something I don't normally practice.

A good practice session.

    • I'm not sure you're calculating the number of strokes you would need to give correctly. The way I figure it, a 6.9 index golfer playing from tees that are rated 70.8/126 would have a course handicap of 6. A 20-index golfer playing from tees that are rated 64/106 would have a course handicap of 11. Therefore, based on the example above, assuming this is the same golf course and these index & slope numbers are based on the different tees, you should only have to give 5 strokes (or one stroke on the five most difficult holes if match play) not 6. Regardless, I get your point...the average golfer has no understanding of how the system works and trying to explain it to people, who haven't bothered to read the documentation provided by either the USGA or the R&A, is hopeless. In any case, I think the WHS as it currently is, does the best job possible of leveling the playing field and I think most golfers (obviously, based on the back & forth on this thread, not all golfers) at least comprehend that.

    • Yes it's true in a large sample like a tournament a bunch of 20 handicaps shouldn't get 13 strokes more than you. One of them will have a day and win. But two on one, the 7 handicap is going to cover those 13 strokes the vast majority of the time. 20 handicaps are shit players. With super high variance and a very asymmetrical distribution of scores. Yes they shoot 85 every once in a while. But they shoot 110 way more often. A 7 handicap's equivalent is shooting 74 every once in a while but... 86 way more often?
