Now that Notah Begay is a veteran on-course reporter, I was wondering what fellow members think about his performance.  With the recent hiring of Jim 'Bones' Mackay to the team, is Begay's job in jeopardy at all?

I see no reason why one would have anything to do with the other...

I agree, Notah has a great golf whisper, I see no reason for him to be at risk.

I think he once shot a 59 in a NWT event.  I think his roommate from college was also pretty good at golf.

I didn't notice he's an on-course reporter, but I haven't watched much non-majors lately. :-(  I do recall seeing him on some golf shows though.

Bones wasn't good in the limited coverage I've seen of him. He said a lot of things like "dinner will taste better if he can make this putt." Notah is good. And he doesn't say "this shot is impossible" right before a guy pulls the shot off.

They'll likely keep Notah around just for the simple fact that he's by far the strongest insider Tiger Woods connection that they have.

Meh...I think they'll keep him around because he's actually pretty good at his job.  The Tiger connection doesn't hurt but I like Notah more than most on-course reporters and commentators.

“(The Masters) probably wouldn’t have been the best place for Tiger to start the year out after this most recent setback,” Begay told Eisen. “I think we should probably look, maybe something just after the Players Championship.” (Notah Begay, 7th April 2017). When asked about Tiger's prospects for playing the U.S. Open in June, Begay added, "Oh, it's a definite possibility. That's probably the event that's circled on his calendar."

20th April 2017: Tiger Woods announces on his website that his scheduled back surgery, which took place the previous week, went well.

I like Notah. Sometimes it seems to me that he gets a little lost in the shuffle, and I wish he'd chime in more, but that's hardly a criticism.

I like Notah, more for his objective demeanor and knowledge than connections. He doesn't overreact like some commentators or use tired cliches.

Sure, I never said he was bad at his job. Not sure where you got that from!

Haha true, but generally, Notah is known as one of the very few people Tiger considers an actual friend.

Both is always so laid back and has that low key attitude. It is like he is always a "couple of beers" in at all times.

I never said that you said he was bad...you just made it sound like the only reason they would keep him around is his relationship with Tiger.  That's something I (and others here) disagree with.

You misinterpreted me because that's not what I implied. I said that his relationship with Tiger alone is grounds for Golf Channel keeping him on their roster. You and the others didn't get what I was saying.

Obviously Tiger news brings the most attention and clicks, and it's useful for Golf Channel to have Notah on their team, regardless of his on-the-course reporting. That's why I'm saying his job is almost definitely safe. They can always go to him for a quick Tiger opinion, and to the knowledgeable viewer, it would have some level of credibility to it because most people know Notah and Tiger are good friends.

My point was that other reporters are more likely to lose airtime to Bones than Notah would be.

    • It may not have been block practice, though, is one of the main points here. You may have been serving and from the same place, but you were likely trying to do slightly different things. It seems that would only be blocked practice if you were trying to hit the same exact ball hit to you to the same exact place in the far court. I'm not sure that's as random as if the ball that you're given to hit is at different places, too, but again…
    • I played tennis in college. I thought block practice was great for serves because you were starting the point and  you could easily adjust where you wanted to place the ball based off the same motion. I equate those to tee balls. I despised block practice for groundstrokes once you reached a certain level and your fundamentals were good. To me, hitting a 100 crosscourt backhands in a row was silly because I would never do that in a match. I needed to randomize it by hitting some deep, some angled, all with different speeds and spins. I share that same thought about iron play. Because we seldom hit the same approach shots hole after hole, I prefer to practice irons randomly.
