The easy answer is Rose or Rory....

Thoughts on P Casey, L Westwood, I Poulter, G McDowell, or S Lowery

Also will Sergio stay hot and play well at this years Open ?

I don't have a clue. I'm gonna say not Rory.

I like Fleetwood. Dude is from Southport which is where Birkdale is being played. Of course, Monty was from Troon and that didn't help him any when the Open was from there. But Fleetwood and Rose would be my top two British-Irish picks with Paddy as my dark horse.

I think Ian Poulter will be in contention on sunday. And off course Jon Rahm.

Ehh will Ian play? Yes he wil.

(off-topic, but not insignificant: thread title needs to be changed to "Which British or Irish player will be in contention....." )

And I agree: hopefully this might be Tommy Fleetwood's time!

Paddy is playing this week like he wants his name mentioned as a contender, considering he won the last time it was a Royal Birkdale.
Others to mention, based on the Scottish - IJP, Horsey, Paul Dunne.

It's hard to say without the draw and the weather forecast, honestly. A few that pop into mind, however:

  • Fleetwood - just a pure ball striker, and he's been hot recently.
  • Casey - played well at the Masters (high winds for the first 2 rounds), and was in the mix at the US Open for a while. I think he wins a major in the next couple of years.
  • Fitzpatrick - complete wild card, but I think he could fare well if it gets windy. I believe he's not a high ball hitter - he's definitely short.

Still kinda far out to take weather forecasts seriously over there, but if the forecast they are calling for holds, it looks as though this could be the third straight Championship at Birkdale where a winner will fail to finish under par. Looking windy and wet so far, but way too far out so take it with a grain of salt.

Any of them besides Rory. He looks awful right now.

Agree with Fleetwood. Followed by Rose and Paddy.

Not looking great for our consensus pick here after day 1.  Fleetwood shot a 76 today.  Paul Casey is leading the way so far with a 66, and the other names mentioned (or known) that played well today are Poulter (67), Laird (68), and Fitzpatrick and Johnston at 69.  Rory, Rose and Westwood did not shoot themselves out of it with 71's.

Well...we tried.  And as Clarisse famously intoned in Rudolph the Red-nosed Reindeer, "there's always tomorrow".
