Music on the Course - When Did This Become a Thing?

Practically speaking, in general handicap rounds of play, yes.

In tournaments… the rules will be tighter than that. They'll assume that if you're listening to music, you're doing it because it benefits you on some level.

I knows there is a Model Local Rule which prohibits use of audio or video during play.  @iacas, do you anticipate that the assumption will be made when the local rule hasn't been adopted?  And if so, why would they not simply adopt the rule, rather than leave it to the interpretation of the officials?

I find playing golf enough without the extra stimulation/noise.  I like the general quiet, birds singing, sound of balls being hit, and the occasional sound of a mental breakdown from somewhere far off on the course with plenty of profane verbal accompaniment.  Quiet is currently a very rare luxury for me.

Phil and I chew gum when we golf.  It keeps us calm, less intensely focused and prevents lockjaw when lining up a short putt.  I hate chewing gum but it is an aid while playing golf.

For general play? No. For competitions? Yes - but they should implement the Local Rule.

BTW, the "assumption" I'm answering is basically what I'd assume if I were a player in a competition. I don't know how else you meant, since the Committee can't assume. They should simply implement it.

So does eating and drinking water, or humming to oneself, talking to a fan, throwing grass in the wind to see its direction, smoking, juggling golf balls, telling a joke, carrying a lucky item (Phil’s coin) Sorry, dumb rule.

Carrying a lucky item (coin) is just as artificial as a sound wave. And the player even states ‘it brings me good luck.’ Fine.

A person listens to music in the cart between shots because he enjoys music. Penalty. I seriously doubt the Bob Marley playing between shots is keeping me from swinging OTT.  I don’t even believe it does anything. I just enjoy it. But the other guy believes his lucky item helps him and that’s just fine?

Nope.

A coin carried around is not an “artificial device” in the sense of the term in 2018. Hold it in your palm to help your putting grip and it’s a penalty though.

Your argument is bad here. It boils down to “I don’t like it.”

And again nobody really cares in handicap rounds.

A lucky coin in one's pocket isn't remotely similar to playing music which others can hear.  The comparison doesn't even make sense. 

To say that your music doesn't bother anyone else is a bit selfish and naive.  I wear hearing aids, yet I could hear a companion's music from 40 feet away, and it was distracting even though he had turned it down to where he thought I couldn't hear it.  He was even playing classic rock, which I like, but not on the golf course.  Is it really so unreasonable to expect to be music free for 4 hours while playing?

I play alone. And I never mentioned ‘it doesn’t bother anyone else.’ Don’t make assumptions, that’s selfish and naive.  I’ve played with people before and they requested music be played in the cart at low volume. And for some committee to be able to tell me that improves my playing is asinine when someone carrying a lucky charm fully admits they believe it helps them score better is fine. The rule wasn’t made because music may bother somebody else. It’s a device deemed to aid a player just as holding a coin to improve grip isn’t allowed. I understand the rule. And as Erik said I’m just saying I don’t like it which is true because I think it’s stupid. So what? If a tournament doesn’t allow it I don’t play music. If I’m playing with someone who doesn’t like it I don’t play it.

I usually sing as loud as I can after making a good shot or putt just to annoy my friends. My go to are show tunes or Barry Manilow songs. I usually dance too when I choose Copa Cabana. 

I also sing Another One Bites the Dust when they miss a putt.

They hate me.

Lol! Yeah...I get the same reaction when I do that. But when the Neil Diamond comes out...it just gets ugly.
