Perhaps I  missed the thread, but what's the story on this vertical groove driver?

Anyone even seen one?

Haven't seen one in person; but watched a Rick Shiels video and read some reviews and comments.  No one not affiliated with the company seems to think the grooves have any effect.  On the other hand; most people hit it well, liked the look of it, etc...Too rich for my blood.

In der bag:
Cleveland Hi-Bore driver, Maltby 5 wood, Maltby hybrid, Maltby irons and wedges (23 to 50) Vokey 59/07, Cleveland Niblick (LH-42), and a Maltby mallet putter.                                                                                                                                                 "When the going gets tough...it's tough to get going."

I remember seeing pictures of it and then forgot about it. Their claims are a bit far fetched:

Quote

Our patented VGG technology is not just an evolution in golf—it’s a 90 degree revolution in golf. VGG changes the game for golfers of every skill-level. The physical properties of this new technology push concentric shock waves away from the shaft giving a crisp, clean response in the hands of the golfer. VGG technology tightens the dispersion and causes a more forward spin and less exaggeration of any slice or hook. Hit more fairways and lower your score with the Vertical Groove Driver.

AFAIK the grooves on a driver don't really do much. On your irons and wedges, they act as a channel to allow debris to move into so the club can get better contact with the ball, similar to how the treads work on your car tires.

This function is unnecessary on a driver. That's why a lot of manufacturers don't even have grooves on the center of the face and a lot of them use grooves to as a design element to help you frame the ball or whatever at address.

I think that latter point is where the benefit of vertical grooves might come into play. Perhaps changing the direction of the lines affects the way some people aim the club, similar to how offset works. As far as changing the groove orientation affecting the physical properties of the club, I highly doubt it.

Pointless on a driver, yeah. Some drivers don't even have grooves in the hitting area. They're decoration/alignment, basically.

I agree, my Cobra driver has no grooves in the hitting area.

Been getting a lot of ads about this vertical groove driver hype. Amazing how easily people are swayed by the latest gimmick. Hell, even normal grooves don't do much other than  possibly shed water away. I can remember years ago that at some driving ranges, the "drivers" were smooth faced.  I once had a pitching wedge that was grooveless, but did have a milled face.  It was called Pal Joey.  Then again, people buy groove sharpeners. Not sure that has any benefit either.

That T less driver looks not much more than a strong 3 wood or the XE1 driver that "swings like a 7 iron".

I think Bridgestone claimed that grooves on a driver can actually reduce spin. They were using horizontal grooves through. I think it had something to with hitting up and how low loft the driver is at impact.

Yeah, just like everyone else agreed --- nonsense.

I believe Kenny Perry uses this driver on the Champion's Tour, right?

The web page for these claim several pro's using them. mostly seniors.  Some of those players will endorse anything if the price is right.

Can you really blame them? They didn't make what players make today.
