Hello All,

I took a little bit of time off from golf and am looking to come back into playing regularly this year. I played once last year and realized that my irons could use a good refreshing.

I currently play a set of Nike ProCombo OS irons. I love how they feel and I like the lofts and how the ball comes off of the clubs. I like the current distance I get from the lofts I am playing and would like to stay close to those lofts (3-21, 4-24, 5-27, 6-31, 7-35, 8-39, 9-43, PW-47).

When I stopped playing regularly, my HC was around a 6.

I am going to get fit, but wanted to solicit some feedback/recommendations before doing so, as I do not have a lot of places around me to get fit for multiple different brands and options.

I have been looking at the following clubs (online) and am planning on hitting them and seeing what I like:

Titleist: 718CB, 718MB, AP2

Taylormade: P770

Is there another brand or model I should be considering?

Thank you in advance.

I can list some more clubs like the ones you posted:

Srixon z765

Mizuno JPX Tour

Mizuno MP18 SC

Callaway X-Forged

In my opinion all the current clubs in this category are sweet as hell.  You’ll enjoy them.

Well after hitting Nike irons it shouldn't be too hard to see an improvement. (Sorry, I'm just of the opinion that Nike equipment was garbage beginning to end)

You listed Titleist 718MB and 718CB as possibilities, you may want to check out the new Callaway APEX MBs and X Forged irons as well. I have the previous model of the APEX MBs and they are the best irons I've ever hit.

I was not a fan of most of the Nike Irons up until the ProCombo and ProCombo OS. Then I hit them and and they just worked.

Just another question for those who might use the AP2, I have a chance to get a new set of 716 AP2 at a good price ($750). If I like the clubs, am I missing out on much compared to the 718 AP2?

I actually had some pro combos when they first came out, I played them for about half a season and ended up giving them away because I didn't like them.

Not not really, the club manufacturers would love to tell you that each new set of irons is much better than their predecessors but its not true 99% of the time.

@joshiemac25,

You're further north in Upstate NY than me, The snow will be back, it isn't even March yet.

Sounds like you are looking for a player's iron. At least from your original post,

These guys are all "Big Five" lovers, But all the ones that were mentioned previously are good ones. My two not from the "Big Five". :touredge: Exotics CBX Forged and Blades, KZG ZO if your ok with "components". But to be honest, I don't know if you even have an authorized Tour Edge dealer in Massena unless you drive a couple hours to Syracuse or Watertown. So I personally, if I wasn't a Tour Edge Exotics junkie, would probably some sort of combo of the :mizuno: MP-18 or :titleist: 718 lines (AP2, CB, MB).

Hello again everyone. Was able to get to a store, hit most of the irons you recommended. Ended up with a set of Titleist AP2s. At the end, was down to choosing between Mizuno JPX 900 forged, Callaway X Forged. Titleist just won out. Now just need to get the snow to melt and temps to go up so we can start thinking about golf again up here! Thanks again for the recommendations!

Let us know what you think once you're able to play with them.

I got mine when they came out last year and absolutely love it.  Was able to get a round in on Sunday as I was in NJ where the courses were open and hit them better than I ever have before!

I still think the best irons out there are mizuno's. I tried to upgrade on my MP59's but looking my numbers there is just no need to upgrade. If i will upgrade i will end up with mizuno anyway.

It's good you will get fitted,

I play a lot of :callaway:, and others have mentioned the top chevron irons you should try.

@onthehunt526 suggested Tour Edge, which I keep trying out.

Also, hit some shots with the Ping i200. Rated as a very friendly Player's club, the i200 irons have launched very well for me at demo days. Plenty of shaft variety available.

Focus, connect and follow through!

following the leads from @Patch and @onthehunt526 , I finally ordered my custom iron set from Tour Edge. I only ordered a partial set 7 thru PW of the EXi's. Had them cut at 1/2 inch long and 1 deg upright and grips built up 1/16.  Awhile back they had a promotion  for a custom 6 iron for around $49 as I recall and liked it so well, finally decided to go ahead.  I really like the UTC shaft. It is graphite but hard to discern from steel at first glance. I ordered F2's, but hope they are not too soft as I read somewhere that the UTC's are a bit more flexible than some. Should be okay though as I have pretty much tamed down my control and could definitely use a little distance boost. I broke 80 the other day, but it is an outlier. I usually am in low/mid 90's. Just starting to play on a more regular basis again.

Buy AP2 because it will still be around in 10 years (new model of course) and still be winning PGA tournaments!

The other brands keep changing the models and design every year, no consistency.

IMO which is usually wrong Ping G700. They are the best clubs I have played since the Mizuno blades I had years ago when I played to a 3. I am now 70 and can shoot my age albeit from the old people tees thanks to the G700.

Finally received my custom set from Tour Edge (via GolfUSA Manhatten). This is the best organization  I could come up with the 14 way OGGIO bag, (they don't leave much in the way of options). Still have one slot to fill, maybe another wedge or hybrid.

    • I'm not sure you're calculating the number of strokes you would need to give correctly. The way I figure it, a 6.9 index golfer playing from tees that are rated 70.8/126 would have a course handicap of 6. A 20-index golfer playing from tees that are rated 64/106 would have a course handicap of 11. Therefore, based on the example above, assuming this is the same golf course and these index & slope numbers are based on the different tees, you should only have to give 5 strokes (or one stroke on the five most difficult holes if match play) not 6. Regardless, I get your point...the average golfer has no understanding of how the system works and trying to explain it to people, who haven't bothered to read the documentation provided by either the USGA or the R&A, is hopeless. In any case, I think the WHS as it currently is, does the best job possible of leveling the playing field and I think most golfers (obviously, based on the back & forth on this thread, not all golfers) at least comprehend that.

    • Yes it's true in a large sample like a tournament a bunch of 20 handicaps shouldn't get 13 strokes more than you. One of them will have a day and win. But two on one, the 7 handicap is going to cover those 13 strokes the vast majority of the time. 20 handicaps are shit players. With super high variance and a very asymmetrical distribution of scores. Yes they shoot 85 every once in a while. But they shoot 110 way more often. A 7 handicap's equivalent is shooting 74 every once in a while but... 86 way more often?
